There shouldn't be a big show and dance about a new iMac because it is not about developing.

is iLife about "developing"? No. Then why was iLife one of the major topics of WWDC keynote in 2003 (that was when they launced iSight as well)? Or how about 2004 when they launched their new displays? Last year they talked about Mac Pro....

I love Apple, don't get me wrong..... but when you put _everything_ your company does on hold ( iLife, your OS, and the new machines to run it..) so that you can focus on a little do-hickey with a little bit of hype attached to it, man it is time to step back.

Everything? Few days ago we got updated MBP. Before that we got iTunes Plus. Before that we got new MacBooks. Before that we got new Final Cut Studio. Before that we got AppleTV....

Only thing that has been delayed is Leopard. And unfortunately it takes iLife with it, since iLife will propably be tied to Leopard.

Hey, I'm a developer. I really can't justify spending £2000+ on a Mac Pro and Display. However the iMac is exactly what I need and I am going to buy one the day the new models come out (whatever name they have).

So don't dismiss the iMac as not for developers. It's just as capable as anything else (after all, development is mostly text editing ;))

We all knew about apple tv, he announced it, it HAD to come out.
iTunes plus update is incidental, at best, Like the MBP's,Minimal updates at best, and Final Cut Studio was probably 95 percent done when the iPhone was announced. you watch and see. There has Not been a substantial announcement from Apple since the iPhone, and i really feel TOO many of their resources are going that way.

I just sold my wife's 17" iMac G5 and she (we) are waiting for the new models so she can get my current 20" iMac. The G4 iBook she's on is too slow for her impatient needs.

I was shocked when I read your post, but then I realized I misread it. I thought you said you sold your wife for a 17" iMac. A wife is worth at least the 24" iMac.

$900 dollars. Im in Cnaada right no wand the iMAcs here cost 1300 for a 17inch model with superdrive. That preety pricy considering i could get a vista machine with double those specs. THough it wont have the solid OS of the iMac. Anyways I'm desperatly hoping for some updates.

I recognize the Newfoundlander accent in your spellings. In my province, we pronounce it "Canada". ;)

Seriously though, I have the exact problem you do. I've wanted a Mac for quite a while, but every model is about $300-500 too expensive for its specs. While older models of Macs had a quality construction that justified extra expense, the new Macs seem just as cheaply made as Windows PCs - and PC makers seem to be getting better (..slightly). Although I'd never buy a PC with Windows on it (Windows is the worst piece of crap ever inflicted on mankind), for the first time ever, I'm thinking of buying a PC and installing Linux on it instead of getting a Mac. So I'm hoping for a new kick-ass iMac to blow me away. (and damn soon)

I would call DRM-free songs "substantial". And what are you expecting really? Brand-new products that we haven't seen before? Those things happen VERY rarely. Last one was iPhone six months ago. What we have got instead is updates to existing products. And that's the way it has always been. Had we not have iPhone, most people would be pleased with the progress. But since we have the iPhone coming up, people complain that it's "taking away all of Apple's resources". Well, it's not.

So what are you expecting, really? What sort of products would you like to see that we haven't seen? Revolutionary products that blow our minds? Yeah, I would like to see that as well, but 95% of the time, that is not what we will get. That's the way it was before iPhone, and that's the way it will e after the iphone.

Really, Let's Face it.. we have seen it before.. ALL of everything at apple is going towards a silly little device that won't make even a marginal dent in the cell phone world. Regardless of what Steve said about market share, we all knows he wants it to be the be-all do-all of cell phones, and take over everything, and it just ain't gonna happen, really. I love Apple, don't get me wrong..... but when you put _everything_ your company does on hold ( iLife, your OS, and the new machines to run it..) so that you can focus on a little do-hickey with a little bit of hype attached to it, man it is time to step back.. Seems a little like the Apple III/ Macintosh thing all over again. Yuk. I want my Apple Back. We haven't even seen a new or re-vamped iPod in probably over a year, and no the iPhone doesn't count, I cant buy that piece of crap just for music and movies, can i? At least not with the storage OR Price Point i have come to expect. All i can say, is, until i see differently, Goodbye Apple, it was nice while it lasted.

Goodbye single user with an unreasonable sense of entitlement from a company that doesn't know who he is.

Are you one of the few fools left who believes that exaggerations, rants, and an anonymous threat to buy a competing product is a good way to spend your time? I don't think anyone here believes you've got your Apple machines all up for sale now, nor are you standing in line at a store to purchase your Windows system. But hey, if by some slim chance you do that, let us know how you like your new system. We're all very concerned that your needs are met.

In Same Boat

I never thought trying to switch from PC to Mac would drive me nuts, but it is! I've had my eye on the 24" iMac, 2.16Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250Gig HD, 256K VRAM since Dec. I held out until the "original" Leopard target in March. That got delayed, so then was holding out until WWDC because of rumored upgrades.......I'm sick of waiting!

If Jobs doesn't show us a sample of the new design and give us a solid release date on June 11th, my order for the current model is as good as entered. I think it's a solid system I'm targetting, so hopefully my pleasure with the switch from PC to Mac will outweigh any potential disappointment I might have from not waiting even longer........tell me I'm not nuts, please!!!

Man, I have had money burning hole in my pants also but if first time Mac buyer like me wait or will never be happly! I'm so going crazy too but hell whats a few months.

iMac not for Pros?!

Good, iMac is not for pros anyway.

Ok, maybe I am in the minority here but... I have a 24" iMac with 3 gb of ram, and every other option they had at the time, and... yes, I use it professionally every day. It's a fine machine, probably the best I have had in awhile (I have had quite a few macs over the years, and have quite a few in my studio at the moment). I was going to buy the macPro, for around 6000 bucks (with a 23" monitor), but instead I "settled" for the 24" iMac for about half the price.

Yes, there are some trade-offs. I would have preferred 4gb (or more) of ram as an option, but when they upped the ram from 2gb to 3gb, and the screen from 20" to 24" I just made a leap of faith, and have not regretted it for 1 minute. It's silly to downgrade the iMac as a toy for students or families etc., I know plenty of professionals who use the iMac every day. Unless you are are working on video, the iMac offers plenty for most professionals using real apps like photoshop, quark, indesign, dreamweaver, aperture etc. I have over 20,000 highres photos in my aperture library, and it beats the pants off what I was using before (g4 tower). Furthermore, in 2 years I can buy another one (which will probably cost lest, and be way faster & more powerful than what I have now). In my humble opinion the 24" iMac blurs the line and edges into the pro-sumer market. But I don't dwell on that at all, I just use it for work, all day long, 6-7 days a week. If you are a professional (and not in video), check the specs out, and talk to others who actually use it professionally (and are happy about their choice).
A happy, pro-user (who is not suffering from buyers remore, lol).
cheers, michael

In the same boat and a couple months becomes 6 months then a year. I am thinking that staying with a Windows machine is just easier.

it's burning under my fingernails...

for months now I am planning to move over to an apple... the only reason i didn't was because i'd like to wait till new versions of the imac and acd's come out... 1 1/2 years ago when i bought my first ipod i thought that I should maybe wait a little longer and get one with video... but back then all i found was denial that there will be a video-ipod anytime soon, so i bought a 'normal' one - baaaam... i think not even one month later steve presented the new product line and i felt stupid

that's why i wait now ... and wait ... and wait... to not do the same 'mistake'... but it is difficult and i was sooooo close a couple times to just buy one

I see the argument, that it is a developer event... but when would be the next chance to present it... I guess a media event/keynote would be necessary for such a revised product line... anything scheduled in near future?

Updated imac this month?

From the appleinsider article..

"Unlike a supply-chain pattern (1, 2) that manifested in the weeks and days leading up to Tuesday's MacBook Pro revamp, checks into the availability and channel flow of existing iMac models revealed no disruptions and normal availability. Additionally, high-volume dealers are expecting an uninterrupted stream of iMac shipments for the foreseeable future."

I read this as there will not be an update of any sort. What do you guys think?

Maybe not until Leopard comes out is what I think.

You can wait forever with any product purchase, it's not an Apple problem.

Buy when you need to or buy when you want to.

Possible, although nothing says Jobs couldn't announce and show off the new, revamped iMac at WWDC with the caveat that it will not be shipping until Leopard ships in October. This would be a 4 month wait though, so I don't see this scenario as very likely... Guess we'll just have to wait and see what next week brings!

if that's the case, can you go ahead and purchase 4 months ahead of time. lot of money to front, but the day it showed up at your door it would be like christmas in october.

Haha, that's amusing... I wonder how many Windows users said the exact same thing when they were waiting 2+ years for Vista... It's not an Apple issue, trust me.

Buy a new machine when you need a new machine, plain and simple. Don't play the waiting game or else all you'll end up doing is just that - waiting.

I really hope to see them because if not i will be really dissapointed and probably buy the old iMac but i want to wait on for a new one!
