Goodness this is FREAKING killing me. Either release a new version of not. I'm holding off on buying an iMac until I get solid information. If no new chipset then I'm getting a macbook pro.

Why would they announce consumer targeted products at a developer conferance?

Developers aren't such introverts that they only care about the machine on their desks - they care *much* more about the machines that their software is going to run on. Do you think Quicken is going to run on more Mac Pro's or more iMacs? Which should they focus testing on?

So what does everyone think the, "come see the massive investments in Desktops at WWDC" that was quoted by Steve Jobs when questioned about the future of the compter line at Apple, is all about?

I think it means all new desktops at WWDC ... pretty much just like Jobs said. Oh, but there's a rumor that says Steve was wrong... um, OK.

The new Mac (replacing the mini and iMac) - what other name could fit the pattern? - should be the main feature. The Mac Pro just got a bump a few weeks ago, so to have it replaced now would be shocking.

So, yeah, technically I guess you could say 'No iMac Updates at WWDC', but only because the iMac and the Mac Mini are done.

I wonder if the display will be FireWireless or UWB.

Because IIRC, they've used WWDC as a place to unveil consumer-oriented products previously. But beyond that, developers understandably have a strong interest in the general health and direction of the platform as a whole.

$900 is too expensive?

What makes the Mini "not cut it" for you?

Buy a lightly used one off eBay?

...whatever it takes to keep you from going to Vista! :D

$900 dollars. Im in Cnaada right no wand the iMAcs here cost 1300 for a 17inch model with superdrive. That preety pricy considering i could get a vista machine with double those specs. THough it wont have the solid OS of the iMac. Anyways I'm desperatly hoping for some updates.

Squeezed but not crushed ....

• I have been saving for 2 years.
• I have enough for a maxed out 24" iMac.
• I have enough for LightWave3D v.9.2
• I have a 6-week vacation coming to play
with
LW3D and use it to make instructional vids.

Does anyone hhave any notion of most likely rollout ???

Someone mentioned "couple of weeks " ? Can't be, right ?

Don't make me take up smoking.

For some reason I do not see them discontinuing the Mac mini. But I agree with your ideas on the iMac. I think come WWDC we will see a Mac line up like this

Mac Mini MacBook Mini (your ultralight MB)
Mac MacBook
Mac Pro MacBook Pro

Steve seems to be a very neat almost OC kind of person and this would make sense to have a mobile version of every desktop. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong but this is where I think the Mac line is going to end up like.

I hope it will come because I was gonna buy it. I still hope for good design and cheaper iMacs at WWDC. :D

All I can say is that I think we will see a new iMac running Leopard at WWDC and hopefully an iPod update as well.

Why wouldn't a software Developer want an iMac?
I am a software developer and I rairly fully utilize any system I am programming for/on. If I do then I am doing something wrong. An iMac for devlopers is a good fit. Enough power to do what you need (equlivlant power of a MacBook Pro), Good size screen, Small Desk form factor so there is more room on your desk for visualilizing Logic problems. The Computer is raised off the desk so if you do spill soda it doesn't get in your computer.

The Power Macs with the multible 30" Displays and 8 Core CPU... But what the Software Developer would gain the most is just the fact they can get more text on the screen with the 30" Display.

I was pointing out that the conference is more about developing than hardware updates. There will be lots of talk about leopard and the new features that you can develop for. There shouldn't be a big show and dance about a new iMac because it is not about developing. I might expect a slight bump to the Mac Pros because of the recent bump to the MBPs. I do agree though that developers use the iMac and that a big Mac Pro is more computer than many need but it doesn't warrant a place in WWDC.

SOON Pleae!

I just sold my wife's 17" iMac G5 and she (we) are waiting for the new models so she can get my current 20" iMac. The G4 iBook she's on is too slow for her impatient needs.

Having finally decided to make the switch, I remember waiting for the iMacs to reach the 168 day average... 100 days later, this is killing me!

My bias thus firmly established, here is my opinion on why there will be new iMacs at the WWDC:

Consider the events of recent months: The mac Pro recieves an octo-core update, the macBook receives an update, the release date for the iPhone is revealed, the macBook Pro is updated.

Now, let's think about that last one. If the "Only pro machines are relevant to the WWDC" argument holds water, then why didn't apple wait a week to let Steve announce it himself? Surely the "industry-first LED screen" alone is enough to warrant a special mention during his keynote?

Furthermore, hasn't the most popular rumour to date been that Steve would announce the release date/availability of the iPhone at the WWDC? And yet, a little over a week out, an ad shows up announcing it for him.

We already know that Leopard won't be released either, and so whilst it will be good to finally see the "secret features", do we really believe that this is all Steve will walk onto the stage with? 3 hours on 10 features (IIRC)?

So, we find ourselves heading into the WWDC with only the iMacs, mac minis and iPods waiting for an update.

The current theory on the iPod is that there won't be an update to it until after the iPhone come out, so as to avoid the chance of it caniballizing sales. The current (hopefully false!) rumour on the mac mini is that it's about to be canned.

Furthermore, we have an extensive delay that seems to confirm the persistent rumours of a substantial redesign that suggests that the update of the iMac might be more impressive than a speed bump and LED screen for the MacBook Pro and maybe - just maybe - something worthy of a Stevenote.

Plus, if he doesn't, I'll damn well send 19,000 pounds of oranges to his office...

No New iMac? Big Shock.

Really, Let's Face it.. we have seen it before.. ALL of everything at apple is going towards a silly little device that won't make even a marginal dent in the cell phone world. Regardless of what Steve said about market share, we all knows he wants it to be the be-all do-all of cell phones, and take over everything, and it just ain't gonna happen, really. I love Apple, don't get me wrong..... but when you put _everything_ your company does on hold ( iLife, your OS, and the new machines to run it..) so that you can focus on a little do-hickey with a little bit of hype attached to it, man it is time to step back.. Seems a little like the Apple III/ Macintosh thing all over again. Yuk. I want my Apple Back. We haven't even seen a new or re-vamped iPod in probably over a year, and no the iPhone doesn't count, I cant buy that piece of crap just for music and movies, can i? At least not with the storage OR Price Point i have come to expect. All i can say, is, until i see differently, Goodbye Apple, it was nice while it lasted.

HAHAHAHAH OOPS ---FROM 2009

Good, iMac is not for pros anyway.

I strongly disagree here. Just because someone buys a computer with "pro" in its name doesn't make them a pro. A true professional buys the least expensive machine that will do the needed tasks. For many that will be the iMac. An iMac that is more capable than the "pro" machines of just two years ago.

Those names aren't redundant at all.

According to http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/schedules/monday_am.html
the keynote will be 1.5 hours long, not 3 hours long. Is this the usual amount of time for a WWDC keynote, or am I missing something?

Well, I certainly hope a new iMac is introduced soon; I'm looking for something with a bigger screen than my MacBook, and a Mac Pro is simply overkill for me. And with such a long time since the last iMac update, I don't want to buy a Mac that will soon be replaced by something that is substantially better than the current product.

I guess I'll still be waiting...

If AppleInsider's sources are right, we are still "months" away from new iMacs being available. That would mean August, or later... I can only hope they are wrong.
