Sounds like a great time to get a replacement battery for your 12/13 Mini.

The long winter just got a little longer.

On my list of to-dos this September!
Got the awesome USB-C case on my 13 Mini now --- just need a fresh battery and I'm good for years to come!

I'm sure most Pro Max users won't be interested in a Fold at least at the price it will launch.....
if those are not interested, what to say about the iphone SE or base iphone model users that is 3-4x cheaper ?!
i think those pro max users will be more inter since they spend more and want/are ok with a bigger phone

I think that this is Ok and makes sense.

The 'pro' stuff is launched before the holiday season(s) for people who care about that stuff and who have pre-ordered as soon as it's announced.

The regular default iPhone is launched to provide a little uplift at spring.

I can't imagine that many people say something 'wow, I can't wait until the regular iPhone xx is launched this September'.

I suspect that it has become the default iPhone that people get with a carrier plan that people get whenever they changed networks, or need a new iPhone etc.

We don't need a new phone or OS every 12 months. I'm probably going to refer my 15 pro and let it go another year or two. So far I've not seen anything it can't do.

I feel like moving to an 18-24 month upgrade cycle makes the most sense, for all devices. Because we're 100% at the peak of "diminishing returns" when it comes to smartphone hardware.

Plus it allows for maximum milkage out of existing devices...
Less R&D spend annually = even better margins.

Let's not kid ourselves .. they won't wait longer but release an even BETTER upgrade when it's time.. it'll just be the same hyper conservative spec bumps but on a longer time horizon.

Perhaps a shift in strategy…

iPhone E / budget iPhone
iPhone Air
iPhone Pro
iPhone Fold

If they did decide to eventually ditch the ‘vanilla’ model then I wouldn’t be surprised. There is so much cross-over these days that it can be hard to justify spending more/less in either direction. If they went with the above instead, there would at least be a lot more distinction between the models.

It’s a small point but your wording is imprecise.

The decision would represent the first time since the iPhone's 2007 debut that Apple has excluded a "standard" model from its annual fall launch.

The launch has not always been in the fall, nor has it been annual.

Original iPhone was announced in January, and I believe the next revision was 1.5 years later.

More accurately you could say “This is first time in the history of the iPhone that the standard model was not part of a new model family introduction.”

Seems like a bad idea. Flagship goes live this year, then the standard model 6 months later? I'd guess most "launch day" sales come from pro/pro max models, but I don't see why you would wait 6 months. Maybe to try and build a second hype wave, but I think it will backfire.

The main issue will be this:
1. Regular user hears of iPhone 18 in march, decides to buy one in july.
2. iPhone 19 Pro is announced two months later.

Greedy move to upsell more Pro/Air phone to consumers who would have bought the cheaper regular model instead. FOMO could be powerful.

Smart from a business standpoint but m not very consumer friendly ngl

You are assuming they stick with the numbers, which becomes less and less likely each year.
Eventually, it’s very likely it could be…
New iPhone Pro in the fall.
iPhone e in the spring.

Just like how right now it’s…
MacBook Pro in the fall
MacBook Air in the spring.

People keep sticking to the construct that just because the iPhone lineup is what it is right now, doesn’t mean that it won’t change. It absolutely will. We still don’t even know for certain if this year‘s iPhones will be the iPhone 17 lineup.
It’s very possible it could be the iPhone 26 line-up, or even simply the iPhone (Late 2025) or iPhone Pro (A19).

How very non-Pro of you! 😆

I couldn't wait to get rid of the 14 Pro with it's overheating & crap battery - incremental yes, way more usable - most definitely yes!
Can you elaborate on “way more usable”?

In recent years the Pro models are delayed for shipping shortly after the pre-order begins while the non-Pros have plenty of stock for days to come. The Pros get all the attention and sales post-keynote.

I ain't buying an iphone fold before the first 2 iterations of that model have been released first. That thing will be flawed for sure. Last time, I got burned so fkn hard with their "revolutionary butterfly keyboard design" on the macbook pro. They'll release that iphone fold just to please the shareholders and they'll leave it to the customers to test out the flaws. For me: New design = wait
