Wrong, you speak in the most blunt terms.

Does the 3GS use an A4 chip? No.

Does the 3GS have 512mb of RAM? No.

The 3GS and iPhone 4 do NOT have "the same internal components". The iPhone 4 is not using the "dying breath of the 3GS processor", since it uses an entirely different chip.

Youre wrong. See my previous answer on page 2 to find out why.

Just people posting more threads with speculative BS I guess, Engadget has already discovered some solid info showing that the iPhone 5 will be an all new phone, people saying they "think" Apple just keep the iPhone 4 around with "minor spec bumps", don't know what they are talking about. They were saying the same thing this time last year, and they were totally wrong.
Link or it's BS. :p

Sounds like android.
I suppose folders and wallpapers sound like android too. This stuff is straight from the jailbreak community. Don't knock it just because you like being spoon fed by Steve.

Hi

I keep reading all the rumours on iphone 5 and I don't see it happening this year and id be very shocked if it did!

I think more likely we'll get the iPhone 4S with a few spec bumps same design and a white version so:

8mp cam
A5 Chip for speed
And the new iOS notifications

Thats about it!

What do you guys think?

I think it's gonna be called iPhone 4G

4G coming from the fact that AT&T is calling their HSPA+ network 4G

iPhone 4G, our fastest, most powerful iPhone yet - Steve Jobs

The iPhone 5 will be a "major" revision (if you consider a "major" revision a changing of the external case, as most people here foolishly seem to think) simply because of all the negative buzz around the iPhone 4 antenna. No one in their right mind would ever, ever think Apple would keep pushing forward with a case design that reminds consumers about reception problems in previous models.

That being said, it will really be a major revision when you look at the internals. Faster processor and GPU. More RAM. Better cameras. Updated cellular radio chipsets. All in all, a complete upgrade. Apple isn't going to sit back and let Android keep eating up marketshare.

i really don't understand why everyone gets caught up in the labels, who cares what they call it. there will be a new phone in June and based on past history this phone will be a components upgrade not a redesign. it is pretty simple

Simple!

Consumer mobile devices market is very competitive, so Apple won't be sitting back like they are with iPad. They'll want to be putting break though tech into iPhone 5 to keep people buying it rather than other devices.

Where as with iPad there is practicly no competition.

Any guesses on GPU? Pretty safe bet they're using the Cortex A9 as the "A5"

I think we'll know a lot more about the iPhone5 internals next week. Once there is a good tear of the iPad2, we will know for sure what the CPU/GPU and minimum RAM will be.
Until then, there will be quite a bit of speculation on the specific GPU model, CPU core type (Cortex A8 or A9) and amount of RAM.

Can't be the A8, they only make it as a "single core" variant;

Gotta be the A9, only dual core processor that Arm has in mass production.

Care to explain how they are holding back with the iPad?

They changed every single component except for the screen. The internal hardware is completely revised and is a huge generation beyond the original. The GPU is 9x as powerful. Even the design is all new.

So again, how are they holding back? Besides the screen there is literally not one more thing they could have changed or upgraded than they did.

i was thinking the same. the iPhone 4 is so perfect. dont know what we need for the next iPhone 5, seriously :D

How about a bigger screen? 3.5" has been around since 2007. It's old now. 4" would be the best.
How about a faster processor? Yup, we're getting it for the iPhone 5
How about a better antenna? Yup, we're getting it for the iPhone 5
How about better battery life? Yup, we're getting it for the iPhone 5
How about a better design? There have been too many complaints about the iPhone 4 model. Proximity issues, easily broken screen, ergonomic issues, antenna issues, no white model etc.

Software wise:
How about a notification system? We need that, as Android completely dominates in that aspect.
How about some revision for the UI since it's been the same for 4 years?
How about an option to turn Multitasking ON/OFF, and a Kill button to close all apps?

All good, all realistic, all should be implemented IMO

If Apple doesn't do anything and pulls the 4 for another year, they might get smoked by competition.

you miss the point it isn't about hardware its all about the OS and applications and nether or those things is tied in any significant way to the hardware. those are the things that competition cannot duplicate and is what sets the iphone apart from the rest.

I thought the same thing. But that didn't stop respectable sites like arstechnica from reporting it. However their methodology seems suspect and appears to be simply an indication of poorly threaded JS execution in the nitro engine. The Benchmark that they used, Sunspider, is not inherently multithreaded.
CPU Performance Data Costs Remain Largely Unchanged For iPad 2

In either case, we'll know on 4 days.

Read the post from .Shine again when you get down to earth from the isheep planet.

what?

are you really going to try to tell me the hardware is what makes the iphone an iphone? there is nothing in the hardware that is unique. the iphone wasn't revolutionary because of its hardware it was revolutionary because of the OS and later on because of the appstore extending the capability of the OS. there is nothing special in the hardware anybody with the cash can put together those parts.

where apple is threatened is if they don't continue the evolution of the iOS and allow Android and other platforms to get ahead in the innovation of the UI.

there will always be something better spec'ed that is the nature of technology,

I wonder what kind of world Ars lives in where "Largely unchanged" = 1.5x increase? In most circles, a 50% increase would be...a damn significant increase.

In any case, I do think they are using A9 cores. Thats what the A9 was designed for. Any supposed deficiency is probably due to the benchmark. When nVidia introduced SLI, the two cards would usually perform 50-60% faster, not an instant 100% faster, due to lack of software optimization.

More importantly, even a single core A9 with faster RAM could show that 50% increase. My guess is that the second core is idle during this test.

Its not only about the hardware, i agree with you at this point!

But only a polished, lagfree IOS isnt enough in 2011.

.Shine`s post is reflecting my opinion nearly 100%.

Right, but there are a lot of features that can give the iPhone an edge in the market such as a better camera or NFC. I'm not saying everyone will use it, but its not only software. For one, they should probably redesign the antennae first.
