NOT GONNA HAPPEN

I wonder what happened to result in the Keynote not taking place anymore. Was there some big product announcement planned, but due to some internal issues/delays it was not going to be ready after all, hence Jobs wouldn't have been able to present it? Seems odd to cancel a Keynote like this - hopefully we'll still see some product upgrades regardless...

Sorry, the new products y're gonna see are updated iPods and the iPhone...NOTHING ELSE in the coming months apart from minor speed/GPU bumps in the PBs...and when I mean small, I really mean small...give up, people...something reeks of putrefaction right now at Apple, probably the stillborn 970MPs...

This cancellation, along with the very odd one-day mac mini "test drive", marks the 2nd sudden marketing event cancellation by Apple in the last week. I wonder if the two are related? There must be some sudden change in planning from up high.

Just 26 hours to go, and we'll all know what the hell Steve is playing at. Gonna be a long old day...

I hope that we will see the Airport A/V, complete with on screen menu and remote, allowing you to control your entire media library including movies, video podcasts, etc... on your TV, interfacing with your Mac or PC (using bonjour?) copy of iTunes 5.0

Video iPod would be nice, but I want to see Apple push the boundaries and allow indie film and video makers (and independant video journalists) a simple way of delivering their products onto TVs in the same way that they have empowered indie music and radio show creators to put their products onto our computers and our iPods.

I can dream, can't I? At least for one more day...

in fact, you should check your facts

of course xcode is 32bit right now, as the developer boxes in fact use a 32bit pentium inside.

Info on the Mac X86/Pentium 4 Development system

They are using a Pentium 4 660. This is a 3.6 GHz chip. It supports 64 bit extensions, but Apple does not support that *yet*.

http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentium4/index.htm

Almost all of the current desktop and server chips from Intel support the 64-bit extensions. Of course, Intel is still selling older chips that are 32-bit only - but Apple is buying 64-bit chips.

There's definitely something going on, I don't think too much of it though, probably just some ill advised ideas no working in real life, I mean, the Mac mini trial deal was going to cost them a fortune.

They would probably have a huge whack of returns simply because people could do so, then they couldn't sell those machines as new so there goes some profit. You could actually do this quite well, get a Mac mini, try it for 30 days and then send it back to Apple then buy the machine again from the refurb store at a good discount (this all only applies in the states of course as us aussies don't get too many promotions - cram and jam is the only one I can remember). The whole plan just seemed doomed from the start.

A better way of attracting switchers would be to advertise, but this time use good ads - sure the few ads that have been aired have been memorable, very few showed the product in use. They were a bit immature and it's time I think for the Mac platform to be seen as a serious contender in the computing world, not some frivolous side-project to Windows in getting work done. They need to display not just the design or the philosophy of the Mac but the computer actually being used to do real stuff. People will switch by seeing how easy things are on a Mac, not hearing some story from a kooky looking Mac user dressed up to look like a budding artist or writer. Yes this is a very creative platform but people need to know that it is not just capable of doing "ordinary" computing but can actually make it easier and fun to boot.

I dunno, there's so much that could be done but just isn't.

When did you go up to 7GB RAM? Or am I just a bit cuckoo?

Just bought one myself (1st generation at a discounted price), but I'm going to return it. For the price, the speed is fine for what I need and a big step up from my current machine, but I thought that Tiger would be included, at least as an upgrade DVD, but it isn't and there is no OS up-to-date program anymore. I must have gotten some old inventory in the channel, but I can't justify spending almost a third of the cost of the machine just to get Tiger, even with the bargain price that I got it at. Not really a good move by Apple, they should just put upgrade DVDs in the boxes, sure it costs them some money, but now they have to take the lower sales price for selling this 'open box' mini I'm going to bring them back.

Share price seems to have soared, up $1.80 to $48.02, that's a big jump early on.

Steve 'BLOW' Jobs sings anal sunshine (bill withers variation)

SJ has been staring at the sun shining out of his arse for so so long that he has been blinded by it and disappeared up same rectum.

He has promised so much over so many years and failed to deliver that even HE is beginning to feel embarressed. Everything & everyone has been blamed and finally he has seen the buck lying at his feet.

Beige mac - its only a matter of time!

Well, the rev a. mini's shipped with Panther so that's probably why Tiger wasn't included, I don't know if Apple include Tiger on their refurbs but I'd say probably not if the refurb is a model that didn't originally ship with 10.4. Next time it would be best to check exactly what comes in the box you're buying.

I hope that the lack of Tiger is not the only reason you're returning the mini, 10.3.9 is a superb operating system, Panther at it's peak really. You could hold onto it and save the money whilst 10.4.3, 10.4.4 and maybe 10.4.5 slowly eek their way into existence, then upgrade to an ultra sleek and stable OS far surpassing Panther.

Or you could just go get Tiger now and join us on the ride early on, your call. Just don't abandon the Mac, it's a great ride once you're on.

List please. Other then the 3Ghz G5 I can't think of anything. Oh you are blowing hot air...sorry...continue on.

This is not a friendly move, and just lacks respect for overseas customers.
It is also the case, that there one has to pay much more for the same product!

Even if Jobs has nothing to present, he can talk to the people, make give a roadmap!

Besides this, the fruit company is simply in trouble, competing with too many and making to many angry at the same
time; in particular they are frustrating their loyal customers, those who knew the company when they made computers and software.

Once there was a deal with Apple records, Apple Computer Inc. has not to deal with
music, and they did not stick to it. Well, where will it lead? The pastime has been just
disappointing for those who are interested in computers and software.

What is missing for customers, is a real choice between Apple and something comparable to them.

Just look how well positioned MS is! They are pushing hard into all major
markets and things:

Gaming (both hardware and software), i.e. a multimedia hub

Processor platforms: Intel and 3+GHz IBM processors

HDTV and Video

Apple just got stuck.

That's why they needed to go Intel....

Let's try to have patience.

MacTels will be fast, that we can be assured of. We have to wait and see how quickly the major apps will run natively on x86. Adobe aims for late 2006 (as someone mentioned). One can assume that Apple's Pro software will be ready as soon as the first Power(Tel)Book hits the shelves.

Until then, say mid- to end 2006 (?), we will be constantly disappointed with the newest PowerPC Mac updates. Steve said "some exciting PowerPC products are in the pipeline", and I am only hoping he was talking about the 970 MP. So that one day we get MultiCore (Dual) G5 PowerMacs.
For the rest: speedbumped iBooks, PowerBooks, iMacs etc.... oh and some major iPod related stuff....

I wonder how Apple would be doing without the iPod success. Would they have been in a position to do the Intel switch? Because I fear it will cost Apple a lot of money until the switch is finalized.
But after that, and especially if Apple has got control of Mac OS X86 leaks, I think we will see the Mac come back.... big time.

Oh, not likely, I've been on board since the Apple II days - never owned any PCs at home.

As for the bundling, I think that I just had the misfortune of getting one of the older boxes before they started including Tiger. Apple really should run the up-to-date program all of the time, because there is always going to be old inventory floating in the retail channel somewhere.

I like 10.3.9 a lot, and held back buying a mini until Tiger had been through some teething. I figure that 10.4.3 is probably stable enough for me, the really big bugs having been squashed (I hope) by now.

Hopefully a non-fanboy sneaks in. Hopefully.

A pale young man, wearing a black turtle neck shirt, pushes his way to the front of the crowd. He cries out shrilly "Steve! Steve! Steve! ... Why have you forsaken me!??" The last word fading into a sob. "Where are the updates Steve? ... We've all been - I've been loyal, Steve! I need a faster PowerMac. I deserve a faster PowerMac. I mean, it's fast enough, it's really really fast... Faster than a PeeCee!" The strength of his conviction wavering with his voice, for one brief moment. "But, Dual Core" he gasped, as though invoking a sacred name. "I - We know you have them Steve! Give them to us. Then ... everything can be alright again". An IBM executive steps out from the shadows, smoking a stout cigar, yet the smoke seems to follow him, always leaving him shrouded. Each step forward you think he'll emerge, but then the smoke whirls around him again. "Yes, my son, there are Dual Core G5s". A deeper silence descends on the crowd. "But, you see, Steve has decided that you are no longer worthy of such an update." Then young man gasps in horror, realising the truth of a feeling he had felt his whole life. He was not worthy. None were worthy of Steve's greatness anymore. In this moment, when updates could once again push back the blightedness of the PC domain, and end the incessant humiliation and shame, and stop the cursed PC tech guy's mockery of him at work, they were not worthy. They had not suffered enough. They had not earned it. Suddenly the young man pulled a knife from his silver and aqua colored bag and screamed. Everyone stepped back quickly. Even the IBM executive stopped smoking for that moment. And then the young man plunged the knife into his chest. A sick sound that stunned the crowd. The young man looked down at his chest with a look of surprise at the pain, the unbelievable pain. He pulled it out and weakly held it over his head, the blood dripping down onto his face. "Steve!" he shrieked. "Steve! I have bled for you! I love you. Please, Steve?" The last words he pleaded, asking both for some way to live on, for some update.

Rant...

I'm new to this forum but not new to macs (well compared to some in this forum very new!) I had the opportunity to go to Paris Expo and because we could sign up to Keynote, a friend and myself decided to go - you know we might never get a chance to see a Stevenote in full effect! So we booked our Eurostar tickets for a day return booked keynote places and basically got sorted and started to get all excited!

Now I'm ticked. The keynote has been cancelled and we're now stuck with the eurostar tickets - so we're now going to the Paris Expo to look around...(no updates on anything...? Excellent!) and think upon what could have been in that keynote. I'm sure we'll still have a good time at the expo as I hear it's still a good show (Keynote badge for 10€ on ebay anyone!?). But man I'm disappointed!

I've been waiting to buy a Powerbook (last PPC revision please!) So that I can ride the initial Intel storm from the sidelines until Rev C or later.
Now all this has happened - I'm going to have to wait another month (Cause I was sure there would have been a PB update in Paris!) until they eventually bring one out! Hopefully by end of Sept, (If not definitely before 1st Nov!) So I'd thought I would share my week of whoa.

All I need know is for Apple to make an awesome announcement tomorrow. So come on who else is getting excited about the iPhone...? I mean it's going to be awe... sorry. no. no it's not.

As I recall during Apple's WWDC 2005 keynote in San Francisco, Steve Jobs did mention still new PPC products in the pipeline this year and there was none. And since Apple is going to a transition, I don't see Apple has the need to lie again in Paris. Wait till January 2006.
If Apple does decide to bring new products this year, it will just show up on their website.

I love it. People make these statements and don't have a freaking clue as to what they are talking about....last I checked MS has cash assets in the 11 figure range. As in BILLIONS. And we aren't even talking about what they could potentially liquidate to add to the that figure. The simple fact is MS could release another decade of flops before it starts hitting them. Oh and we will ignore the fact that they are still making money hand over fist over foot. Take your previcid and eat down these facts:

I agree. Anyone who's saying Microsoft is going down anytime soon is out of their mind. Microsoft will deliver Windows Vista and every PC user will want it. If you don't agree, you gotta look at the previews of the beta that's already in most torrent sites anyway. Windows has obviously always sold millions more than OS X, but this time I think they just might deserve it. The OS looks like much more than one could expect. Rather than the switch to Intel, I think Apple is struggling to make Leopard a much better OS, maybe they might skip 10.5-10.9. If Apple includes the minimal type of changes that came with Tiger into Leopard, they might just be in trouble.

After Adobe's announcement that a native version of Creative Suite with Photoshop probably wouldn't be available for a Mac-Intel until mid 2007 and the fact that the Adobe President stated that " Steve makes it sound like the transition will be easy but in reality it isn't easy at all, in fact it is going to be very difficult." It kind of sounds like it may be a long while before pro apps are available and who wants to pay thousands for new hardware only to run key software through an emulator.
All the while, there will be Window versions of the same vendor's latest pro apps running natively on the same Intel x86 hardware.

Until Apple shows off Final Cut Studio, Logic and Shake running on an x86 Mac, I don't think anybody is gonna be fully convinced the transition was a good decision. A roadmap is just a roadmap, you could get stuck or lost along the way. IBM did. We need to see those Apps doing pro stuff now, and Apple isn't ready just yet. I say something BIG media-related tomorrow, nothing important (computer-wise) for the rest of the year.

You can't really compare sales of Windows vs OS X because OS X is sold exclusively to a much smaller user base. If the playing field were leveled and both Windows and OS X would run on the same hardware I think you'd see quite a battle. If Apple would have licenced OS X back in 2002 and pushed it along-side the iPod I think we'd have a different computing world today. Microsoft has pretty much spent the past 4 years trying to patch it's security flaws and shed it's image as an evil corporate empire. Meanwhile, Apple has seen it's image shine like never before and put out some rather compelling products along the way. I've always maintained that with some actual marketing, OS X would be the OS of choice for most consumers. It's almost outright neglect for them not to advertise iLife and OS X in the mainstream media avenues. I certainly hope they aren't going to wait until Vista arrives to try and make that advertising push.

and it's because there is just nothing going on right now...

I think it's just plain and simple: 'cuz there isn't anything big to talk about! What is he supposed to do? Re-iterate the whole Intel move again? We've heard that already and most of us can't wait for the launch of the first intel mac. What also would you talk about if you don't have any more exciting product upgrades? The mighty mouse? That'd be way too small of a deal. Consider the recent ibook/mac mini upgrades... call that upgrades? it's the least improved upgrades i've seen in years. There is just nothing going on right now. You just can't "please" anyone in times like these.

Steve announced the intel switch a few months ago, set the community in shock, and luckily the stock price hasn't dropped. He would not risk to have another keynote that could possibly set a negative vibe... So, not having a keynote at all is probably the safest thing to do. If he had good things to announce, there sure as heck would be a keynote speech.

Mixed emotions to this announcement (or is that lack of an announcement?). Can we deduce from this that Apple sales are strong? That they believe that the current product out there will take us through to 2006 and the first of the mactels?. And if we accept that sales are strong imagine the level of sales when they do bring out the new wave of hardware?

Exciting times ahead. In 2006 and 2007 :p
