Sweet - if that's the case I should be able to pick up a unlocked 16B for ~ $550 and sell my unlocked 4 for ~ 400~450 :)

That way when LTE iPhone does come out I can just upgrade....

This is exactly right. DON'T EXPECT IT TO BE HARDWARE FOCUSED. This is iOS 5 event with some updates to iPhone (4S).

This is totally backwards!

The WWDC event was about iOS5. We don't need two events in four months just to release a OS update.

June was about the Software. Today is a HARDWARE event with some updates to iOS5.

I wish I lived on the west coast. They're going to find out all the answers in a few minutes. I still have to wait another three hours. :(

:D It's a good thing you don't live in London. They won't find out for 8 more hours. ;)

Kidding aside, the only real threat to the iPhone 4S/5/whatever it's called is the ongoing lawsuits with Samsung. Apple rejected Samsung's settlement offer in Australia today, and with Samsung's Nexus Prime reportedly being announced next week, Samsung has filed a request in a federal court in California to block sales of the next iPhone (similar to what Apple did in Europe and Australia regarding the Galaxy Tab).

Actually, I think the Kindle Fire is a bigger long-term threat to iPad than the Galaxy Tab (and all the other Android tablets) since it's based on someone actually doing something different from Apple (and not just copying them). Ironically, it is also a threat to the Galaxy Tab since it shows the Android tablets as the me-too devices that they are. For now, iPad and Fire will likely divide an expanding tablet market between them (iPad taking the high-end, Fire taking the low-end that wouldn't have gone to Apple, anyway). This might make Samsung realize it's better to be a good supplier to Apple than a pure competitor. OTOH, unfortunately it might make them more desperate.

Hopefully cooler heads prevail at both companies.

They already went over iOS 5 in June. Why would they do it all over again and waste time? What I'm saying is that the big thing here is hardware with significant improvements under- the- hood or a complete redesign. The iPhone 4S doesn't make sense because then it'll be a keynote of things we already know and are expecting AND Assistant is not gonna take one hour to talk about (there might be things we haven't heard of so i might be wrong). There has to be something more than just a modified iPhone 4. Something we haven't heard of *cough* iPhone 5.

The iPhone 4 in WWDC took two hours to announce and go over. The iPhone 3GS (A "speedbump" phone) took 20 minutes to announce and go over in WWDC 2009.

Apple has never disappointed no matter how many times people have predicted an event will be "disappointing" or depressing. iPhone 5 or not we will ALL be impressed with whatever is revealed.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A5313e Safari/7534.48.3)

Wouldn't apple leak that there's no design change to keep people's hopes down then? With that logic, it seems like they wouldn't want mass disappointment

It's not about the hardware. It's about the biggest interface change since multitouch: talk to your phone.

"Let's talk iPhone"

i agree. i think the biggest announcement will be about its voice command feature.

just like i said (see page 2 towards the bottom, its kinda long)

wait and see? Are you nuts? We have to speculate and throw as many "facts" out there that might sound true after the presentation to validate our lives.

"Yeah but no but.. yeah but no but Stevesaidthathewoulddotimlikealezza cause hegotgivenhimlikeaidsoftheliverandthemmadehimselallaseeeehooh but yeah but no but...etc." /pollard

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think the lack of LTE and WiMax were expected.

The interesting thing is WSJ isn not denying the redesigned iPhone 5 either. I would suspect that Apple would make a controlled leak/statement through WSJ before the event to say something along the lines of "our sources say that there is no redesigned iPhone 5".

Also to compliment this, 9to5 says that Hard Candy is making 50 000 cases for an iOS device with a 4.5" screen. It clearly can't be the iPod Touch because it's the same teardrop design we've been seeing for the rumored iPhone 5.

I'm in Australia and I already know the results since I am from your future! I can't tell you however what happened or it will break the time / space continuation. Needless to say apple has a few surprises in store..

I don't think we are getting the 5....why introduce the 4S and the 5? The pattern has been between major design changes to introduce a speedier version of the current design. If they introduce two, one faster with the current design and one with the new design. my question is why? The 5 would have to be more expensive for it to make sense. My guess is that we get a 4S, updated iPod touches and an update on iOS. People will be disappointed only because they listen to the rumors, decide that what they want is what will be released....an LTE ATT iphone would be about as useful as the first iPhone....very little 3G coverage and more EDGE coverage....Apple probably doesn't want the phone out until the networks have the right coverage. This is why the Sprint rumor sounds plausible...they have a bigger 4G network, from what I understand (But I could be wrong)....less than 3 hours and we will know....

Big fail. But the this is just another rumor.

HSPA+ is basically a guarantee since the Verizon iPhone already has the capability.

I'm 99% sure you're mistaken about this. HSPA+ has not been supported, it's up to 21Mbps down, vs. the ~7Mbps down we have now. In actuality on AT&T the most I've seen is about 4-5 down, but it's great when it's that fast, and a significant jump to HSPA+ speeds will be very, very nice, especially as I tether to my laptop and iPad. :)

I am not surprised at this, there just isn't any practical application for 4G right now. There may be demand for it, but 4G isn't in enough cities to justify it. Now I am sure that the new iPhone is going to be world edition (both CDMA and GSM).

But, did you see what Hard Candy CEO Tim Hickman said about the Mystery IOS Device?? He thinks it's a new IPod Touch.. He could be wrong, but then the rest of the world could be wrong too..

Look, even the CEO of Hard Candy Cases, Tim Hickman thinks the shape we all saw is for a "New IPod Touch"

http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/04/hard-...-cases-for-ios-device-with-a-4-5-inch-screen/

This explains everything....

Or nothing. He wouldn't be the first CEO to make a bad call. I'm not saying did not guess right, just that he made a gut decision based on non-Apple supplied info. It's like the articles state -- he is making a bet like putting a chip on red. We'll see if he gets a payoff in a few hours though.

The no LTE/WiMax thing was really expected, and really stupid to start rumors over, whoever made them. Good job, you had a lot of people convinced ;)

I'm glad that there isn't LTE. Imagine the battery life problems in this generation. We need better hardware (and software) tweaks before this can come in. I'd rather wait another year or two and get something that "just works", in other words, Apple's medicine, rather than get something that's not ready for prime time. Not to mention, the network still has to evolve too, along with their bigheaded companies.

Well now that the whole Sprint exclusivity seems to be pretty much out of the picture, I can still have hopes for a redesign. At least for the remaining 3 hours. :apple: Good luck Tim, Steve, & the Team :apple:

He made a BIG Bet!! It's not the plastic to make the cases, but making the tooling to make the cases. Tooling alone can be over $100K. That is one BIG Bet!! I have worked on tooling like this before for a different industry and it's NOT Cheap!!

That would suck

I don't get why Apple would exclude LTE... it is suicide. I've got to iPhone 4 phones and love them, but wish a) they had better battery life, b) they had a bigger screen, and c) wish they had 4G speeds (or at least a fraction of the speed available on AT&T).
First thing you do when replacing a CEO that is as iconic as Steve Jobs is to hit a major product launch out of the park -- dispell any theories/rumors that the company can't go on without him.
If they fail to bring 4G to this phone, EVERYONE is going to question Tim Cook's leadership (and unfairly at that)...
