$300 for a 16gb isn't too bad though if you bought it for a subsidized price.

Since the original iPhone, every upgrade I've made I've covered the new subsidized price by selling the old model. 18 +/- months of use and getting $300 back that takes care of the new cost, can't beat it.

Is not a bad price, but you can get much more . I sold my iPhone 5 16 GB (att) for 560 a month ago on cl. (iOS 7 installed technique ) lol

First world problems.

I have a iPhone 5 32gb and would gladly take $350-375. This covers the cost for my 5s on contract after sub.

I have bought and sold a lot of stuff on CL. I am the guy that offers you what I'm willing to pay for the item you are selling. You call this "low balling". I call it smart money management. I got an iPad 2 in perfect condition for $235 6 months after it came out. I got a brand new iPad 4 (yes 4th gen) new in the box for $420 21 days after it was released. I bought a second iPad 4 for my son 4 months ago for $400.00. I'm a cash buyer. I never flake and I always show up with the amount I agreed to pay.

All this anger about low ball offers seems odd to me. Why would anyone want to pay more than they have to for anything they buy? Especially a used electronic device with no warranty and unknown damage history.

Just because Apple sets high prices you are willing to pay does not mean people in the used phone market are willing to get screwed as well.

No anger.
You can offer anything you want and if you find anyone that agrees to it then go for it.
Just because you found some desperate people doesn't mean everyone will give you their stuff dirt cheap.
Anyone can decline if they want and move on without getting suckered in a price lower than what their item is worth.

You should have sold it a few weeks ago because now I'm sure your area is saturated with people either looking to sell their 5 or people figuring they'll buy the new 5c. BUT I've got a few tips since I feel I've gotten a nice system down since I've been selling my last few on there.

1. Do you have the original box? If you don't, keep it next time around. I always take the first picture in a well lit area with the phone in the box at an angle so you can see phone, box, iPhone logo. Showing the box helps catch the buyers eye when looking at the pics real quick and it looks more professional. It gives the buyer the appearance that the phone is brand new even though they know it isn't.

2. If you don't have the box see if a friend kept theirs and just take the photo of it in it. If the friend doesn't want it give it to buyer, if not tell the buyer you don't have the box anymore. Buyers low ball all the time, CL is ruthless so what if they really wanted the box they still have a nice iPhone. If they get pissed walk away there will always be someone else.

3. You've got to make your ad look and sound better than anyone else selling a 5. Take quality photos (front, back , accessories), add in any cases/accessories (most people don't want the them but it'll draw people to your ad, the more they think they get the better! If they want the accessories make sure you price reflects that)

4. Tell low ballers that you already have an offer at YOUR lowest price and see if they bite.

5. Offer to drive part way depending on price. I'm always harder with the price if I drive at all.

6. Bullet point your ad. Keep it clean and not long winded (like this post)

7. Most important. Keep reposting your ad as a new ad every few days especially right before the weekends. Ads only stay on the top of the list for about a day or 2. Especially right now the last thing you want is to put your ad up and 24 hrs later 100 new phones have been posted on top of yours.

This definitely should be a thread " how to resell your iPhone on CL "

Good job . I couldn't agree more with this ! Number 4 works for me all the time = )

Though I feel for the OP, when is the best time to BUY a used 5? I want to get the cheapest price possible when upgrading from my 4s. I am doing this so I can get on the non-s cycle.

Will prices hit rock bottem after the 5s is released, or is it now?

Now is the best time. There are a ton of phones on the market right now and prices are lower than they will be in 3+ months.

I'm kind of in the same boat, considering upgrading my 4S to a 5. I've seen lots come up for sale lately, but in Canada the prices are still pretty high... Partly because we got stuck with 3 year contracts until just recently.

Keep an eye open for what you want at a price you're okay with. It tends to be easier to get a good deal on locked phones.

I've been trying to selly unlocked 64gb iPhone 5 and it's been super hard. I've been asking for 575 and all I've been getting are offers for 500 and lower. It just annoys me when I see people selling 16gb models for 450 and I can't get even 550.

That is to be expected. If a base iPhone sells for x, you will only get 50 cents on the dollar for anything above. For example, if you paid $200 more to go from 16GB to 64GB, you'd only get $100 back reselling.

ebay it or only use paypal via Craigs List. too many scammers..one guy gave me counterfeit money!

NEVER EVER ACCEPT paypal on Craigslist. 100% scammers use Paypal. If you are afraid of counterfeit money meet at the bank. DOnt accept paypal, personal checks or any kind WesterUnion garbage. I would make exception for USPS Money Order if you know how they look. But I have not yet once met somebody who offer to pay via USPS money order. Its always some scam.

I hear you.
The 64gb is a hard sell.
And even though its $200 more than the 16 brand new the used one don't keep it's value that much over the 16 and 32gb models

I will not sell mine below $450. I didn't baby this thing to let it go for cheap. Every year is the same. Fools don't have/want to pay $450-500 for outgoing model yet they will tell you new model is coming out. So what? its not like he will go and buy it if he's are looking for used previous gen on CL

I just got an iPhone 5 in great condition with 9 months warranty left for $369.00

You better lower your expectations bud.

There's supply and demand coming into play.

I understand the fact of not accepting low ballers but with apple releasing the 5s/5c people are selling their iPhone 5 more and more to the point where the price point is feeling a downward pressure.

Look at what they're selling for on eBay and try to discern a good price on CL as well.

Market saturation is the answer, given previously of course, but it's right on. Today is the day to get an iPhone 5 cheap. In a couple of months, maybe even less, it's probable that amount will go up slightly.

I always go with a marker to check. My family owns a retail store so i just take it from there whenever I sell but I'm sure you can find them cheap online. Its worth it to have one even if you use it 1x a year.

No problems selling on Craigs list here.

Sold a unlocked 32GB iPhone 5 in good condition with box, cable, charger, headphones, and warranty till the 20th (I bought it release day) for $500. I listed it for $540-OBO and it sold in 2 days.

Now is the best time for buyers of used Iphone 5 and the worst for sellers due to how saturated the market is right now with people trying to unload them. Prices will go back up slightly probably 3-4 weeks after the 5S is released.

I don't think of 'low baller' as a negative term. I'm using it to describe someone that asks if I'll sell it for less than $50-100 off my asking prince. Plus I always tell them I'll get back to them if I don't sell it for my price in a few weeks. CL is caveman style it's always negotiable. As a buyer you look for that one person that'll take your lower asking price. As a seller you hope for someone that won't try to talk you down (I had my iPad 2 I got when they came on CL for 3 weeks for $300 & finally got someone that paid full price I was pumped). Most transactions happen in the middle.

I have a 32GB that is failing at the perfect time, I have a genius bar appointment for sleep/wake button issues tomorrow so hopefully I will be selling it basically new next week.

If not I already have gazelle and best buy sending me shipping labels just in case.

Pricing varies by location. Here in fairbanks, you wont be able to sell your iPhone 5 for $350, that's what people pay for a 32gb iPad 4th gen. I buy and sell phones a lot. Supply vs demand will determine price. If you are selling a phone that people want a lot, you will get your price, if not you will have to come down.

So far on CL it hasn't worked out for me have gotten nothing but scammers and low ballers.

That was my experience on Craigslist. I sold my 4 on eBay and listed it as Buy It Now. I took great pictures, wrote an accurate, complete description, and got top dollar for mine. I wish I had more phones to sell because it was so much fun.

Now until 2 weeks after launch is definitely the worst time to sell your older phone. When the new 5S's go on sale for sky high prices the 5's should retain their value a little better for a short while. Right now is a waiting game, and that is the worst market for sellers. Usually a seller can afford to wait, but if they are selling to make room for a new device, then they are emotionally charged and more prone to sell for less. Buyers take advantage of this.

Wait until October when the new 5's are selling for $700+. The old 5's prices will be back near or above 400 - that's been my experience with selling time frames.

I think the new 5c model will hit the resale price of the older versions. I'm not currently planning to upgrade, but if I did and money was tight I would still choose a new 5c over a second hand 5. As I said in another thread, people take there iPhones to the toilet, I don't want that on my face!

But I always keep the accessories, box etc. As someone else said always offer it with everything you would get if buying it new and more if you can. That way yours will look more tempting than the next guys.
Also as above, good photos in BRIGHT conditions. Preferably taken with a Pro camera if you have one (or a friend does).

I think the new 5c model will hit the resale price of the older versions.

One advantage that the 5 has over the 5C is that the 5 is available in black/slate. That might help prices of the 5 a little, especially since the 5S went to "spaceship" gray.

Regarding PayPal, as long as they agree to a 'friends and family' (gift) transaction, there's no downside. Money is instantly transferred, and there's no way they can make any sort of claim to rip you off and get their money back.

I often suggest this over cash since cash can be counterfeited.. and hunting down a bank/credit union to deposit cash requires me to not be lazy :)

Resell prices vary by carrier. Who is yours with?

$300 is the magic instant sale number right now for the AT&T and Verizon iPhone 5.

The Sprint one around $250 if you want to sell it fast and the Tmobile one around $275.

Source please? Condition?

I sold my iPhone 4S for $275 on eBay.

The iPhone 5 is worth up to $400 in perfect condition on eBay.

I can't manage to sell my iPhone 5 16gb at cl all the offers I am receiving are for $300. How did you guys sell your phones?

The key is to sell before the next iPhone is announced.

I was able to get $650 for my 64GB iPhone 5 on eBay just a couple days before Apple's September 10th event. Maybe at this point it would just be easier to give it to Apple for credit towards the 5s.
