This is how I hoped they would do it. I have a license already through Steam and though I haven’t checked yet I’m almost positive that means a license for the Mac version as well.

Curious to see how well it actually runs on a MacBook Pro.

£49.99 for a 7 year old game?... hmmmmm-no.

The game is on Steam and if you already own it on PC you get the Mac version for free. You can also purchase cheaper Steam keys through resellers like GreenManGaming

Plus the Steam Summer Sale is later this month where it's gonna get a big discount

I’ve often wondered why Apple haven’t done this already and concluded, against my initial instinct, that it may not be worth it for Apple in the long term. Yes, Apple could release a console and yes it would disrupt the market.

But they would be entering an already competitive landscape. Are people going to go out and buy an Apple console when they already own a PS5/Xbox/Switch? Well some will, but the uptake will be fairly low, especially in the early years.

And as the years progressed and new consoles are released, Apple would have to offer something incredible to entice people to switch to their platform. It would have to be something ridiculous like GTA6 (or by then 7?) exclusivity - And something like that will cost a lot - sure Apple can afford it, but will the reward be worth it in the long term? The existing triopoly already have their own exclusives too.

And so instead we have Apple Arcade which doesn’t really have direct competitor as such - maybe Xbox Game Streaming but that is double the price and has a completely different type of game.

And of course all this leads nicely to the VR headset - rather than release a ‘classic console’ Apple are poised to enter the gaming market from a different angle. The uptake of VR across the industry is fairly low so I guess they’re hoping they can dictate the shape what is currently a smaller gaming market, become dominant in the VR area and grow the marker as market leader.

You’re right, it makes zero sense for Apple to make a console. They essentially already make consoles, an iPhone is just as locked down as an Xbox if not moreso.

They just need to focus on getting actual game developers to care about the platform they already have.

I don't disagree with your post, but would suggest that the very reason why gaming on the Mac is such a miserable dumpster fire of years-old retreads is because we, as Apple users, are far too compliant in always laying down and allowing Apple to do everything that is absolutely 100 percent best for it first and its users second.

Sometimes pouring money into something is about building ecosystem and goodwill, not extracting mindless amounts of extra profit out of subservient "fans." No corporation deserves to have fans. We're customers and users, period.

Being all-in as an Apple user means I'm by far more critical of the company and its products. I demand more, and demand Apple do more to keep my money flowing, not just hand it over. And if Apple chooses that my priorities aren't its own, that's their perrogative, but I'll gladly jump ship, as I did for 100% of my gaming purchases.

I love this game..! I've not played it though since I've moved my primary machine to a Mac. Can't wait to see how it runs.

I also love the fact that I do not have to purchase it again. On Steam it just shows INSTALL.

Not my cup of tea, but wish more developers would bring their games to Mac to make it a more viable platform.

apply needs to up their third party support. lots of game developers are interested on mac, but when it comes to download xcode to do so, they stop

The PC gaming market is an absolute mess right now. With graphics cards being ludicrously expensive and it being more difficult than ever to build your own machine, I believe there’s an opening of SOC gaming. As someone who uses both PC and Mac, buying a Mac is just so, so much easier. I don’t have a confusing number processors and I don’t have to think about something like graphics cards. If Apple can convince some AAA gaming companies to come on board there’s an opening for Apple in the gaming space. No, it’s not cheaper, but since developers know that everyone is on the same hardware it becomes much easier to make for everyone. WWDC this year could be pretty interesting.

The PC gaming market is fine. It's Nvidia that's the mess. AMD on the other hand isn't having issues and is actually affordable, and in many ways better.

Lemme guess: You played the game at launch in 2016 and haven't touched it since haven't you?

No Man's Sky is a vastly different game now. It's really, really good, and they now delivered on all their promises, and have exceeded expectations going above and beyond each update.

This video is hilarious! And yes...I was one of those people that played this game at launch for 100's of hours, got bored and found it harder and harder to get back into it after each update. I do applaud Hello Games though for sticking with this for so many years and providing all of those updates for free. That's unheard of in today's gaming landscape.

It's one of the game industry's biggest redemption stories, on par with Final Fantasy 14

Though FF14's redemption story is more exciting since Square Enix LITERALLY destroyed the original game, setting an ingame apocalypse that players took part in, and all they could do was watch as the end slowly came.

Apples were ”released” about 10 000 years ago. You should stop eating them then? Although they’ve been updated countless times with rich content. The game is nothing like it was and they keep releasing updates and new DLC all the time free of charge. I take a good ”old” game anytime over a new bad release. Heard of Redfall? or Gollum? Or SW Jedi Sutvivor without decent performance even on a top-tier PC with 4090? The list is long.

Despite several new tiles like Snowrunner and Dragonheir with MetalFX, Fort solis and Layers of Fear on UE 5 with MetalFX, No Man’s Sky, Grid Legends, The Medium and Elex II coming to mention a few suddenly all realism is thrown out of the window and people expect to see all the latest AAA games on Mac, a platform having only 2.5% share on Steam. A wise PC gamer and developer considering to change to consoles because of the bad buggy state of PC gaming described it well, ”Devs aren't treating us Windows gamers with enough respect so it shouldn't shock people that they don't care about Macs either. If they treat us Windows gamers this bad, why do people get so shocked repeatedly about just ignoring macOS entirely?”.

People also blame Mac games like RE Village for being old, but are quick to point out the absence of even older games like Cyberpunk and Red Dead Redemption 2 on Mac. So according to that logic we should never have those old games on Mac either. They talk about compromises and late releases on Mac and brag about day-and-date releases on PC but it’s all fine when they have to wait months for solid patches and fixes when their favorite game turns out to be garbage. Suddenly that’s not compromising and not a part of the realism in the PC gaming world, because there is always another upcoming title that hopefully will be good but could as well be the next failed release. It’s a kind of hypocrisy we could all live without.

I have always thought this is a weird logic in my encounters with many around this forum and elsewhere. People first complain they can’t play ancient 32-bit games on Mac, like the 16-year-old Team Fortress as if that’s all they do and all that matters. At the same time they say they can’t play new AAA games on Mac, as if that’s all they do and all that matters.

Then when new games come to Mac, even AAA titles, they laugh and say Mac only gets old games, like they say about RE Village and NMS. Then when devs update their old 32-bit games to AS like Aspyr is doing they laugh again and say Mac only gets old games and playing old goodies is nothing to cheer about. The same people who first wanted to play old 32-bit games.

Then they say Apple makes it impossible for devs to make games and does nothing to help but when Apple make efforts in the right direction and helps devs lika 4A with Metro Exodus, Larian with BG3 and Piranha Bytes with Elex 2 and works with Capcom, Hello Games, Bloober Team, Fallen Leaf and ohers they say that’s just for show and no good and never will be.

Then when all this is called Mac bashing they say no it’s about choice and being realist and keep bragging about PC performance and freedom of choice. Then when I suggest they should just get a PC/console and be happy instead of complaining here all the time about a platform they don’t really game on they go back to step one and keep complaining, rinse and repeat.

So in the end nothing anybody does for Mac gaming matters because people just love to point finger and mock Apple, Macs and Mac gamers. Otherwise there would be no need for such posts when there is a solution and if people really were realists and didn’t care about talking down other platforms they don’t game on. That’s the sad situation in general on this forum, PCrumors.com.

There's nothing "hard" about building a PC. If you can operate a screwdriver and know enough not to lick an electric outlet, you can build a PC. If that feels like too much, then buy a prebuilt gaming PC from Alienware, Razer, or any one of a dozen other boutique builders. If that's too much, you buy a console and get a smaller subset of games compared to a PC, but still far, far larger than any Mac will ever have.

Or, you decide the platform is more important than the game and you become zen with waiting 5+ years for a port, as with NMS. The Mac & PC Games forum here on MacRumors is full of people willing to defend Mac gaming, aggressively so. More power to them, it's not for me to tell anyone how they should game (nor should they be so quick to tell me how I should feel about the state of Mac gaming), but imagining some future where AAA studios see the Mac as equal is fantasyland.

Where do I even begin with this. There's nothing "hard" about building a PC. If you can operate a screwdriver and know enough not to lick an electric outlet, you can build a PC. Honestly I don't trust half the people in this forum to be able to build a gaming PC, otherwise they'd just do a repeat of the infamous The Verge PC Build. Remember, Apple users have the stereotype of being computer illiterate for a reason.

New to modern gaming...any benefit buying it on Steam vs. Mac App Store?
On Mac App Store you could use family sharing. I often play with my girlfriend so we buy the game once and play togheter.

At the same time, that's OK! Just because it's easier than most people realize, doesn't mean it's an activity for everyone. But then don't adopt a fringe platform like the Mac and act surprised that you give up a lot as a result, like many parts of the gaming ecosystem. I adore my Macs for what they're good at and don't bemoan them for what they're not, and never will be. Software matters above platform allegiance, always.

The staff don't seem interested in reporting, but this is actually the latest in a series of Mac games announced this month.

'SnowRunner is coming to the Apple silicon Mac lineup, and will be available for $29.99 on the Mac App Store, Mac via Steam, and the Epic Games Store. All previously released DLC, as well as the Premium Edition and Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 Passes, will be available for purchase separately.'

'Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration being remade in Unreal Engine 5. Layers of Fear will be available on Mac with Apple Silicon taking full advantage of the M-Series chipsets and Metal framework. Layers of Fear is launching on June 15 for Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.'

'Fort Solis is coming soon to Steam on Mac!'

'Available on the incredible Apple silicon Mac lineup, Dragonheir: Silent Gods is native on Mac and takes full advantage of Metal — software that powers hardware-accelerated graphics on Apple platforms — resulting in smooth and responsive gameplay with high frame rates and stunning visuals. Leveraging technology, such as Metal FX Upscaling, Variable Refresh Rate, and Spatial Audio, players will experience enhanced graphics and a more immersive audio experience.'

'Following its successful launch on Windows PC and console, Piranha Bytes presents the highly ambitious Science-Fantasy-RPG, ELEX II, is coming to Mac. Available this summer on the Mac App Store, ELEX II stands as one of the pioneering titles to fully embrace the GPU driven pipelines with Indirect Command Buffer (ICB) approach on Mac. ELEX II is also among the select few games that have shaders specifically optimised for the Metal shading language.'
I've sent them tips about such news several times but gave up because of their lack of interest. I mean we have the first UE 5 game with full Metal 3 support, Layers of Fear, coming June 15 and another just like that later, Fort Solis, just to mention a few and they only write about NMS. Good thing we have our thread so some people can get to know about more new titles.
