Those are explicit gaming machines. iPods do have some semblance of educational value. I'm using mine to learn Japanese.

The Edu Store only lists new models.
The rebate is for old models? What is the supposed price of old models?
How do I know the part numbers of old/new iPods?
Do I get a 160 € discount on a 149 € 2GB iPod nano ?
So effectively Apple gives me 11 € if I accept an iPod (1st Gen with 2nd Gen price) ?
Is Apple paying me to get rid of old iPods?
How can I buy old models if they are not displayed in the Store ? By phone?

I can't speak for Spain, but the U.S. online store will show you the old models to buy if you pretend to buy a MacBook (or anything elgible for the rebate) and add it to your cart. The old 5G 30GB iPod shows up at $250 now, so I've gained something by waiting.

Hopefully the apple retail stores near me will have the old pod in stock though.

While the educational discount may be gone, the US Government Employee discount is still there, even for the new iPods. PS: There is no requirement to prove that you are a Government Employee.

CF

I ordered a new iPod yesterday via the Federal Employee Store. They called me today and needed me to fax them a paystub or they'd charge me full price. So... yes, they do verify your status.

Thanks for the correction. I knew something had to be wrong. I was amused at the translation it came up with though.

As far as educational pricing is concerned, I'm a little disappointed that we lost that benefit. I realize that the prices have dropped for everyone, and I acknowledge that this is a great thing. However, educational discounts are nice in the sense that it makes me feel like Apple is acknowledging the financial needs of students and making an effort to help them out especially over others. Even a $10 discount on iPods would be a nice way for Apple to acknowledge its educational customers.

I think Apple should end the whole Edu pricing system. Helps further the school kids image of the platform.

WOW.. I stand corrected. It's just that I have been using this service for years and have bought 5 iPods, and at least 7 Macs this way and they have never asked. Also, all of my co-workers are also Federal employees and so far none have ever been asked to prove it. I bought a 24" iMac 5 days ago, and again, no verification. Perhaps with the loss of the EDU discount they are cracking down now?

I wonder if particular colleges, which have their own on-campus stores and also specialized pages in the online Apple Store, might still have discounts.

Our school has it's own apple store and apple website and they do not have the new ipod with edu discounts.

But I called both the school and a retail store and both has said that the old ipods that are still in stock are discounted in addition to the educational price.

Both the stores have said that the new ipods do not have edu discount.

I called the Apple Store here in Denmark. The guy told me that the discount is not available right now, but sounded like that it will be back. They probably waiting for the Student offer to end. But that offer in Denmark ends in October not 16th September like in US. So I think I'll just order it now anyway.

Today, all mention of the Back to School rebate has DISAPPEARED from the Apple Store ...

The rebate is (was? :( ) available till October the 7th ! I have the pdf , if it is worth something ...

The rebate FAQ was changed very recently but I cannot find it either ...

No old stuff appears in the store ?

Maybe the system should be changed, but an early contact with an Apple machine helps to kill some myths ... The reaction to a Mac from some people who have not touched one is EXACTLY the one you say ... Oh no, this is kid stuff, else how come I have not used one? Is like believing hang ups and viruses are part of the computing experience (and tinkering and pirating ...). Oh, I know plenty of 'pros' who think along this lines

Well, it is not only the Edu pricing system, it is also the back to school offers: buy several stuff and get a discount for the whole package ... Removing this is not intelligent, IMHO.

Stranger is that the NUS site now no longer seems to have an Apple link to get to the HE store - am I missing something?

Yeah i know i was searching for that for quarter of an hour the other day to no avail! im just going to order over the phone now.

Yeah, I'd also be ok with ending edu. discounts....

If you take a closer look, the "edu pricing" is basically the same pricing they offer for all sorts of other groups. You can get, for example, a "military discount" or a "government employee" discount, which are the same.

They'll even offer someone the educational pricing if they can show they're home-schooling their kid.

Obviously, Apple is still making a decent profit when they sell at this discounted price, or they wouldn't be so generous offering it in the first place. (I know someone did the math not too long ago and concluded that Apple was making approximately an $800 profit on each G4 Powerbook sold, before the Macbooks were released.)

In fact, I'm sure the *real* reason they put limits of "1 per year" on most of the items purchased on these discounts is NOT because it's too costly for Apple to let them go at these prices... but rather, they're afraid it will cut into their profits selling at the higher "regular" price. (Students or faculty would buy big lots of Macs, iPods, etc. and resell them on eBay, etc.)

I'd rather see the reduced prices across the board. As it stands, a lot of people kind of get screwed out of an educational price when I'd say they have a valid reason to get one anyway. (EG. Parents of small children buying a second Mac mainly for the kids to run learning/educational games on it.)

Educational discounts, especially for a company like Apple, are brilliant.

Students, for the most part, want a computer that:

a) isn't too expensive
b) can get basic tasks done

Selling them a system that is reliable wins a customer for life, far beyond when the educational discounts expire. Generally, students who use Apples are hesitant to buy any other system.

Student discounts for Apple is the less illicit analogy to giving cigarettes to kids. Hook 'em while they're young.. ;)

Which is why it's too bad that high school students aren't eligible for educational discounts on new Macs.

Well, this is the first time I've used the store, so they may just trust you guys more than me ;-)

Similar things have happened elsewhere to me recently. Verizon gave us a nice government discount. I had it for a year, all they initially needed to verify us was to send us an email to a .gov address, and have us respond.

Then, out of the blue, they needed a photocopy of our govt. id on file. They didn't trust us anymore =/

honestly, i can't blame apple for doing this.
They just introduced them. so kudos for apple doing such a nice promotion in the first place. they wanted to blow out the older models.

Apple just get real new models soon!

It's back? Only 1 place to access it

The pdf says I can buy a 17'' iMac Core 2 Duo (with Superdrive)
but the html faq says I can't (only Core Duo) !

I think I'll phone tomorrow, my head is going to explode ! ;)

I wonder whether this means that the iTV that's coming out next year will only not be eligible for edu discount. Its sort of a similar situation to the ipod. Not really educational.

About being asked for ID. I've ordered a variety of products on the edu apple store and have never been asked for any form of ID. The only time was when I bought a new remote for my ipod at a local apple store and I was asked for my college ID.

Its also interesting that whereas on the US store they limit your purchases through a disclaimer as you sign in, on the EU store (dutch one to be precise) there is no such disclaimer!

Apple is jus weird sometimes
