Damn Apple, Why do they always have to be the one who implement the things first or the last! I hate it  I know that I will not use it that much but who knows what happens in the very near future, everyone uses NFC & I will be unsatisfied about my iPhone!!!

As someone who really doesn't care about a larger screen size this was one of the few features I was looking forward to.

Sucks.

This. My iPhone 4 does everything I need it to do, and well. I'm really only upgrading because me and the wife have 'em coming, and to play with new gadgets. :D

So the more frivolous features the better. In my opinion, suited to my life.

While technology I believe is there, I think Apple feels like in FC is really not widespread enough to make it worth their while to include it in this release of the iPhone. That this will be a great feature to stick in the iPhone 5S version, there is no doubt… and hopefully we will see you sometime in 2013 of that holiday season.

With the wide amount of identity theft in this country, I think a lot of people are wary about such a system. It may be very secure, but I don't think I would use it just yet until I see just exactly how it works and how secure it is.

This is what sucks about rumor sites. Reporting anything and everything in the name of page hits.

Will that be the only thing you are dissatisfied with?

Duh.

The payment infrastructure hasn't been built out. NFC works great in Japan, South Korea, etc. because those countries have largely decided the dominant contactless payment systems.

Particularly in the United States, there is no major NFC contactless payment system. Apple isn't going to roll out an NFC-enabled handset until the world widely deploys a system. It's why the original iPhone was only a 2G device. Apple prioritizes compatibility with widespread network deployment, rather than catering to a new technology that is only available in a handful of markets

(Siri is an exception, but then again, Siri is a beta software service).

Now that I think about it... Apple likes proprietary stuff.

Lots of Android phones use MHL to HDMI or have mini HDMI ports on the phone.

Apple is pushing Airplay.

I could totally see Apple skipping NFC... citing security concerns and developing a proprietary wireless standard for exchanging secure information like passes and payments.

They have enough ego and pull in the market to make it happen.

I never use it on my Android devices. I always disable it. I don't feel comfortable with having it on my phone.

whats funny is the fanboys say its overated and not taking off if its not in the next iphone, but if it is they will be going on and on about it how its the best thing since sliced bread

Because, as with almost all things, it's all about the implementation.
The companies who have it now do what with it?
When Apple finally does implement it they will have the partners and the infrastructure all set up to make sure that it is the next best thing since sliced bread.

So if Jim Dalrymple says so that means not NFC? Is he always right with everything he says/predicts?

I'm still not sure how safe NFC is security wise. Probably a good thing it's not being widely implemented yet, or at least not in iPhones.

Even if the new iPhone HAD NFC capabilities, it's years and years away from becoming a mainstream form of payment. Considering that everyone and their gramma uses a debit card for everything, what are the chances of something else replacing that?

Obviously still buying it, but I was really hoping that this tech would make it in. Has potential.

Yeah NFC has work to do, but it would make it a lot easier if it was built into the iPhone. Adoption would be much faster.

The same logic would apply to next years iPhone, since iPhones usually have the same design for 2 years. Do you think next years iPhone will not have NFC if next months does not? I am not sure if I agree with this.

So the big selling points for this iPhone?

More RAM
LTE
4" Screen

My gut tells me a lot of iPhone 4 owners (not 4S) will wait till next years iPhone to upgrade. Not because next months iPhone is a failure (it is still going to be a very good phone), but because the iPhone 4 is a well built phone and I think people would rather wait till the A6 is in the iPhone.

Why would NFC need to go on the back? One of the problems with NFC is that it's easy to steam from NFC devices even when theyr'e in pockets or bags. If you used NFC to bring up a barcode on screen which then has to be scanned you avoid this risk, and you have a requirement for the NFC to be on the front.

Didn't we already know this? I can swear I read that Apple was using Passport as a "first step," but that there would be no true NFC. At any rate, not saddened. I'm not 100% convinced NFC is 100% secure. Let Android users be the guinea pig. Swiping my CC isn't really all that difficult or onerous.

that means no nfc in the next iphone assuming they use the design over two generations. oh well my s2 has it and i will never use it

I think Apple is interested in NFC, but won't include it until qualcomm makes an integrated chip for it. Right now, qualcomm is still making individual chips for NFC and comms, and until those get put on the same die to save space, Apple isn't going to ship a device.
