Not an important feature if Apple doesn't include it:rolleyes:

I know you're being tongue in cheek but it is true in the sense that no one is going to implement nfc in the us until Apple does it.

Nfc has been around forever, but no one really cares. Apple is the only one that can make it widespread and mainstream.

I was looking forward to it because i wanted to have more places to use it, but i can wait. They better include it in the next one though ;)

...
With the wide amount of identity theft in this country, I think a lot of people are wary about such a system. It may be very secure, but I don't think I would use it just yet until I see just exactly how it works and how secure it is.

exactly, that's why they acquired that fingerprint recognition company

Darn. I keep fantasizing about the day where my phone will also be my debit card. That'd be so boss.

and right on cue, 99% of people here go from "I can't wait for NFC" to "NFC is overrated".
Boy you got that right. I was thinking exactly the same thing before I started reading this thread. Now, we'll have 30 pages of why NFC is a bad idea. K-ripes.

One less cool thing the iPhone 5 won't have though. That's not good. A bargain on a used 4S is sounding better all the time.

It will be on the 2013 iPhone. I wasn't expecting it this year. Nor do I think I would ever use it.

It's typical of Apple to not move ahead of the market. They're a company that prefers to focus their resources on technology that actually directly benefit the user, but at least where I live, NFC malls and the likes are still so far from being common. We should be used to this situation since the wait for USB 3 support. Apple prefers to watch and see, then implement when the market is ready.

For Android users with NFC phones, I can only ask them if this is a feature they are using in their daily life? I don't believe so, and believe it is more a gimmick to sell phones. That's not to say NFC is useless though. It's a nice feature to have in order to future-proof your phone. But I don't think it's an important feature to have even the forthcoming year.

Just curious. Obviously I know it's more expensive. But isn't it usually worth upgrading every 2 years (if you're staying with the same carrier in the US). Either way - you're paying the same voice/data rate - might as well have the carrier subsidize the latest/greatest. Even if you choose another phone than the iPhone.

Like I said - obviously - it's more out of pocket every two years. But it keeps you current.

We are there. We reached the point were every since rumor prior the launch of the next iPhone is true.
Remember the haptic glass before the iPhone 4S?

I think Apple is just waiting till they can afford it..........

NFC would be a waste of space. Why would you need NFC on a smartphone that is also equipped with Bluetooth and wifi, especially in iOS, a mobile OS that lacks direct device-to-device sharing capability in general and instead focuses on syncing to iCloud or a PC.
You do realise that NFC would complement Bluetooth and WiFi? It would never be used as a replacement of Bluetooth. Quick pairing with bluetooth enabled devices, instant access to public WiFi networks, that sort of thing.

Get a Galaxy Nexus ;)

While technology I believe is there, I think Apple feels like in FC is really not widespread enough to make it worth their while to include it in this release of the iPhone. That this will be a great feature to stick in the iPhone 5S version, there is no doubt… and hopefully we will see you sometime in 2013 of that holiday season.

Nothing to do with your comments about NFC, but I just have to tell you there will not be an iPhone '5S', and likely never another iPhone 'XS' again. The iPhone 4S has an S because of Siri, Tim Cook made this known to people when he said it.

That can't be said for sure. Apple would have made it work on the iPhone 5 if they thought it would be useful. They'll add it if it becomes more useful. Even if the whole "use your phone as a credit card" thing works out, I don't see any true purpose other than novelty. It's also less secure.

whats funny is the fanboys say its overated and not taking off if its not in the next iphone, but if it is they will be going on and on about it how its the best thing since sliced bread

And then theres people like you, who always assume those are the same persons.

The entire Anandtech article is very good. Pretty much lays out in detail what we will see in about 3 weeks.

If we were to believe that article then the next iPhone will be all about catching up with competition - bigger screen, LTE, better processor. Probably the only advantage over competition will be iPhone's thickness (or should I say "thinness") - sadly I think it might be promoted as the "thinest iPhone yet".

It's a catch 22, it won't be useful until Apple does it either :p

companies are not going to invest in nfc because the galaxy nexus has it

maybe apple has their own version. They might be thinking, well NFC is going very slowly on competitors so lets not give them a boost start by making it work for them with our phone doing it. Lets make our own that they can't touch and really screw over the competitor phone market :p

I'd love to see this actually because there are so many people claiming that things would be the same without Apple. Nice to see idiots get left behind because Apple didn't jump start their engines and/or cannot be copied.

Why would NFC need to go on the back? One of the problems with NFC is that it's easy to steam from NFC devices even when theyr'e in pockets or bags. If you used NFC to bring up a barcode on screen which then has to be scanned you avoid this risk, and you have a requirement for the NFC to be on the front.

You can't put an antenna like the NFC antenna in the front, you have the screen.

And requiring a barcode or qr code to be scanned defeats the NFC purpose

Those kinds of functions are still useless, or at least not useful enough to justify there being a card permanently in there for it. It's still just for fun, like how Siri currently is.

Like Thunderbolt and FireWire, right? Man, whoever didn't jump on that train is seriously getting left behind.
