Hmm.. looks familiar

It's just me, or does that "iWalk" in the video look a lot like the Franklin eBookMan?

Steve bought a shirt with a collar?

Now that really would be a surprise. Maybe he's got rid of that old pair of jeans as well?

Where no PC has gone before? I guess that's just a reference to some chessy ads for the new products based on a "Star Trek" theme. Remember in Star Trek they claimed to go "where no man has gone before", but ended up landing on a planet already populated by humanoids, who on the whole had a remarkable grasp of the English language...

I'm real sorry for pestering but WHAT IS THE iWALK? The video was not shown on Spymac when I went because of Apple legal stuff.
What did it do? A PDA? Tablet? What was it?
Just curious.

forgone before

The answers to these riddles are quite elementary .

Way ---beyond--- rumor sites

no ---pc--- has gone before

Steve Jobs would not waste his time building another pda (he would waste the time to make idvds of a fake one though)

We gossip about a PDA, apple goes way beyond a PDA

A voice/pen interface be it a tablet or imac sitting on the coffee table is a pla, a personal lifestyle assistant

Apple are taking the mac to PDA Town. Where no pc has gone before

Bring on the PLA

hype?

I'm starting to think that we might be setting ourselves up for a letdown.

Sort of like before Star Wars:The Phantom Menace came out. The trailers for the movie were great. The movie left a lot to be desired.

Of course, I hope that Apple really blows our socks off.

$1800 for a LCD??? what a stupid article! and i don't seriously think they'll speedbump the iBooks... maybe the powerbooks because Apple are going to have a hard time marketing a 667MHz PowerBook, which is their best laptop vs. a 1.whatever GHz G4 Apollo or G5 (unlikely).

guess we'll wait and see, but 1800 for an LCD comp will fall over in the market...

YUP, I agree! $1800 seems rediculous. Especially since I live in Japan, the prices are higher here than the US! I might as well buy an iBook!!! REAL mobility is in the iBook even if there is that tablet thingy. and since it's cheaper, I would buy an iBook.

They've got to give some reason to buy the iMac (or whatever it's going to be called) since mac portables are selling so well.

I think $1800 is the top line iMac

With Superdrive, 733mhz G4, Mac OS 10 default OS.

Bundeled with tons of software... and since it's a tablet you get some for of expandability a PCMCIA card! (urgh)

I like all this imagination!

Especially the idea of an iMac tablet, iPDA, iPhoto etc.

Maybe the new iMac will have mobile phone access... that's a stab at Nokia! (for not including thier communicator software for Mac OS)

iMac

There is so much talk of a "new" iBook? C'mon people. You guys have lost it.

What is the oldest form factor(s) being used still in Apple's lineup?

Definitely the iMac
Definitely the PowerMac G3/G4 case

We will see new form factors for those Machines for sure.

We will not see:
OSX on Intel
Machines over 1.6GHZ that are shipping
G5's

Maybe Apple has licensed the gyroscope technology in the Segway, and it is built-in to the LCD monitor and it's like as thin as a peice of paper and balances on your desk. It uses flash memory cards instead of hard drives so it's quiet and uses Internet 2 technology anywhere in the World completely wirelessly with AirWire Technology.

SpyMac

So SpyMac has tried to make this even more legit by telling us that Apple Legal has made them take down the photos! Hahahaha.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

ha.

Hmm.. Yes and no. I don't think they will radically modify the iBook, but they may add some colors, or a minor speed bump. (maybe combo drive standard)

YUP. Won't see OSX on Intel,no G5s and probably machines will be up to 1.3 GHz at the most, maybe a DP 1.2 or something.

I do wish to see a 10.2 release with SPRING LOADED FOLDERS! It's so god da*n annoying when you drag something to a folder in the column view and you wait and nothing happens. That's really the only thing I miss about OS9. I think a COLUMN spring loaded folder function would help.
BUT, more than anything, I want SPEED!!! SPEED!!! SPEED!! So it will run quick even on a G3 500Mhz like MY iBook combo. Window resizing is PAINFUL!

Anyone remember the rumor about an iMac with a detachable monitor that would serve as a "tablet" pc? Handwriting recognition, wireless connection to the "base" or network conduit? That would certainly fit the hype...and the photo on the MacWorld materials...

I don't think it's just new software, as it was last time. I agree that the design of the towers and imacs are way too old. I really think it could be that they put a G5 (or Apollo named G5) in a dodecahedron case, as someone said a couple of days ago. It would be very Steve Jobsy to introduce such a shape, don't you think? And that would definitely be a new thing. If it's just the LCD iMac there really has to be something special about it to justify the pre-expo hyping from Apple, like the modular, semi-portable imac/ibook/PDA mixture handwriting recognizing idea. I mean, there are LCD PC's out there, so just a plain LCD screen isn't really that new, right?

You are all misreading what the letters say. They are only referring to the Macworld Expo, where no Pc has been before, sure,it is a Macworld Expo, not a PCExpo. This one is big, yeah,it is a very big Expo, meaning, there are a lot of Hardware and Softwarecompanies showing things,my god, read what is there and sorry for my bad English.Do not be disappointed on Monday and read correctly.

oh the humanity of it all

As for the big let down, I just don't believe its going to be a Hindenburg. Apple cannot have lost all grasp of reality. They've cooked something up and we will be impressed. But the real concern is will it just be all us Mac Heads who get excited about a new toy or will it convert Windows loyalists to our side.

I'm really p.o. that I won't be near a computer with an internet connection on Monday. I'll have to read all about it after the event. Which might be better, but doestn' help my anticipation any.

Well lets think a little..

Ok, what do we know?

1) Gigawire
Apple registered "Gigawire" which there is speculation that it's wireless firewire running at 54 mbs. 54 mbs is fast enough to stream TV quality video through the air.

2) 1 Ghz G3 from IBM
IBM has said that they can get the G3 to 1 Ghz. This makes for a very powerful video encoding processor.

3) Quicktime 6
MPEG-4 baby. Streaming video standard.

4) Large Hard drives in small spaces
What has the trend in hard drive sizes been lately? They are getting quite large, and staying very smalll. So hard drive space is in a abundance.

5) Digitial Convergence
The iPod started it. Apple is in the digital lifestyle business. Computing as we know it is on the way out.

6) iDVD
Apple likes video

7) Rumored price of new iMac $1800.
ibooks don't cost that much and they are supposed to be more expensive than desktops.

ok so you put these all together, and you get:

iMac PVR (Personal Video Recorder)

or some variation of that. Imagine. An iMac that's not just a computer any more but a digital hub using Gigawire. Records TV shows from your cable signal like a TiVO while streaming the picture to your TV. Integration into your home stereo system with iTunes. It makes a lot of sense though I'm interested in what you guys think?

They would need two devices or maybe one that sits between your cable signal and the TV. It streams the signal to the iMac PVR for recording, and during playback it receives the signal from the iMac, kind of like a Super Airport. It would also act as your home wireless hub. That's the key, get eveything wireless. They are trying to get everything wireless. Hmm.

Yeah, this is what I don't get. IS the Apollo called the G5? What IS qualified to be called a G5?
I think we are all excited about the G5, but shouldn't we be interested in the actual specs of the machine? I mean the G4 isn't THAT different to the G3 except for the Velocity Engine and stuff. WHAT are we saying equals the G5? Maybe breaking the GHz barrier will be going from G4 to G5. Maybe that's what Apple will do.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I'm going crazy with all this hype. Noone is going to be surprised unless there is a
Powermac running a G8 @ 587 Ghz!!!

YEAH!! the only area that Apple is a little behind the PC gang is in connecting with the TV. Yes my iBook can mirror my moniter on the TV (PC users around me were amazed..), but there is no really good way to input/output video or use the computer as a recorder or "streaming" machine.

THAT would be cool. You have your stereo speakers, your TV, your music player (iPod) your PDA/laptop all connected with "Gigawire" or "Airport", with some COOL SOFTWARE that's simple and elegant. A REAL digital hub!

Let's see...

... no PC has ever had iTunes 2.0.6 installed yet.

Or MacOS X v10.1.3.

I'll bet that's it.

Hey iapple--

The reason you are lost is because we have been flapping about all this for weeks now: Here's the basics-

The G4 has several different versions. 7400, 7450, etc. The latest one, the 7460, is called the Apollo. Many people speculated early that Apple was going to release the 7460 (basically a new G4) and call it a G5.

A G5, however, is a different chip altogether. It has a restructured pipeline and architecture and is a 64 bit chip. There are other similar chips out there, some used by SGI, but most notably, Intel's itanium. 64 bit chips are the next 'big thing.' They are much faster.

Star Trek

Has anyone thought what if they brought back the star trek project? The star trek project was the porting of the Mac OS to intel hardware it was killed in the 91' or 92' just thought it was interesting to here to go where no "PC" (instead of mac) has gone before.
