No perceivable performance difference between iPad 4 and Air.

I would reset to factor and clean out the old code. Mine does not have any of the issues that you face but I agree with you, I do not notice a difference beween 4 and 5 in performance.

I did one better and did a DFU restore (w/ fresh install, no iCloud, no Siri, etc.). IOS 7 is still a stuttery mess for me - no improvement from the lag that plagued the 3/4 under iOS7. I'm doing a swap this afternoon to see if, in the highly unlikely case, it's a hardware fault.

ipad air is

noticeably faster than 4. its as advertised from my usage the last 36 hrs or so. as far as wallpaper no offense but what an odd thing to get hung up about

The wallpaper was only one of many issues with UI lag, it's hardly the point of my concern (but one of the best examples). Keyboard lag, stuttering when scrolling, etc. System wide and annoying.

yea dude i would just head right back and exchange it. now worries just a dud

Great, now we all know your iPad is perfect. Do you also walk into hospitals and tell everyone how great you feel? I don't see the point of arguing with other people who have legitimate issues that you don't (or can't see).

Yes, I can speak about mine. And you should about yours. The problem I have is with comments like "the Air has stuttering problems" or "countless others", like its a new version of Antennagate. Just because a few people come here to complain, or because YOUR iPad Air is having stuttering issues doesn't mean they all do. And what I do see is a lot of posts saying "I was going to buy an Air but I am reading about these issues". There's issues, and then there's exaggerations or generalizations. In which bucket does this supposed stuttering problem fall under? Hmmm, let me see, let me check all the third party reviews. Nope, not one mentions it. Exaggeration maybe?

That's my point. Not to brag about my pristine, perfect iPad Air. Which btw is very, very nice...

For sure, that's that the plan at this point.

Lol good luck with that. It's not a dud, it's iOS7. Before you exchange it (just so you don't have to set everything up again) use the ones in the store. I thought the loose power button on the 5S was a defect too, but they're all like that.

People say it'll be optimized and smoothed out within the next couple patches. I think that's way too optimistic of a thought. I'd give iOS8 the patch that fixes these issues, and no sooner. iOS7 is a mess right now. I bought my first iPhone last week and I've noticed more than 50 bugs and issues with general UI artifacts and mishaps. You would have thought this was a beta 5 build, not the release that millions of people are using.

Just an example: Yesterday I was on a Facetime call (audio only) and I brought down notification shade and click on weather. Because of the green bar at the top (showing your call) the bottom of the weather app was being cut off by the same amount the green bar at the top was taking up. Just really unsightly and unprofessional Software. I've run into so many of these bugs - and the stuttering is another thing entirely. It's quite sad really

Yeah, I exchanged it this morning (screen issue) and the lag and general UI sluggishness is no different.

While I agree about your view here to a certain degree - you miss the point of the thread entirely. The thread is to talk about the UI mishaps and discuss whether this is an iOS7 issue, or if the iPad Air is not living up to it's supposed substantial performance boost. It's not to bash on the iPad Air or turn people away from buying it. Some people just think that the latest and greatest product that ships with the latest software should run the software smoothly - and the iPad Air (as well as any other iPad) simply does not.

I agree completely with the OP about his curiosity and concern and he has responded to all of the comments very nicely and professionally. So I would say that you are the one being oversensitive about the issues at hand, and not him

Sucks man.

Just out of curiosity - how is the speaker in comparison to the iPad 4? Is it actually stereo now, or does it just have two holes to make it appear stereo...like on the iPhone 5/5S

Speakers are definitely stereo (you can make out left vs right channel) but, equally, they sound a bit more tinny than my 4.

Yes, I would say they are pretty much equal to my mini in volume and range. Maybe a bit louder.

haha really really sad. First world problem indeed lmao.

bummer dude.

I'm using an Air and iPad 4 side-by-side (both running 7.0.3) and I'm seeing the exact same issues on both devices:

1. Stuttering on home screen when using gesture controls.
2. Wallpaper selection screen stutters/lags when scrolling through wallpaper options.
3. Still takes an oddly long time to set wallpaper.

With the x2 CPU upgrade and improved GPU benchmarks, I really expected a much smoother experience. In all honesty, I see no difference in the UI fluidity.

The weight, form, etc. are all quite good but I'm disappointed with the A7 (or maybe iOS7...not sure).

This is clearly a lack of optimisation of iOS 7. I'm 100% agree with you about stuttering using gesture control, omg it's laggy like an old android device, it's very ugly... Same for the keyboard sliding...

Damn it Apple do something quicly please...

I have the iPad 4 and Air, and the performance difference I experience is the download/upload/streaming and browsing speed advantage of the Air. That is an upgrade for me!

The 4 is no slouch..it's just that this incremental update to the 4 seems worth the dough. In fact, I already have a buyer for the 4 and, once done, the Air will have cost me ~ $145 out of pocket.

I went from the 16GB WiFi iPad 4 -> 32GB WiFi + LTE Air

I noticed improvement immediately.

I wasn't really expecting to as, like a damned fool, I read threads like this telling me I wouldn't

Being a gullible sheep, I believed: "Gee I just hope it's not worse... You know.. With the terrible RAM problem and, and, and, all these guys must know right? "

Then I used it, and now I feel deceived. Which feels pretty good actually :)

I find the differences subtle but definitely noticeable. Switching between apps, for example, the new app is far quicker to respond than it was on the 4. Web browsing feels considerably faster.

Remember that most things are still being developed to work ok on Mini-class devices, so you aren't going to see huge improvements on the new devices right away. Apple moves fast, but not that fast.

so sad really? lets go back to a time when there was pagers. Be happy for what you have. geez

I don't have another ipad to compare it to, but my ipad air definitely isn't as smooth as my iPhone 5. It stutters slightly almost everywhere. It's barely noticeable most of the time. Everything is just smoother on my phone. I've restarted it a few times, and nothing's changed.

Yeah, how dare he say his iPad's perfectly fine.

Stuttering pretty much evens things up with Android...

I wonder if Steve would have let ios7 out with all the stuttering it does? iOS 6 was so smooth. Even iOS 5 seemed smooth.

Ios7 looks better to me, but man does it FEEL like my old android phones.

That was my impression using it in store as well, that it didn't feel any faster than my year-old iPhone 5. Even browsing non-mobile versions of sites on my iPhone felt the same.

What's more, today I was at the mall and decided to stop in the Apple Store again, see if I felt any differently about the Air. At one point, I pulled up the app switcher, and while swiping between apps, it crashed to the home screen. I just put the thing down and walked out after that.

Yep, well blame apple for providing smooth, relatively bug-less software in iOS5-iOS6; and then dropping this unpolished janky iOS7 on everyone the following year.

It's not sad because I am so stuck up and ungrateful that I cannot appreciate it. But bug-less and smooth UI is what Apple's iOS was known for. It's like seeing Harvard Law School go from rank #1 to rank #5 and then saying "so sad really?" Well actually - that would be quite sad. But that doesn't mean it's not still one of the best.

The reason for that is iOS7 is even less optimized for the iPad than it is for the iPhone. They spent more time working on iOS7 for iPhone during the beta builds (fixing those bugs - providing optimizations) and then they realized during the last 3-4 weeks that the iPad beta was still buggy as hell so they moved over devs to work specifically on the iPad to finish it before launch. But they didn't spend nearly as much time working on the iPad version, so thus - the lackluster and unpolished iPad software we have today. :apple:

Thanks for the comment. I'm wondering why they sound tinny. That's kinda lame hah - would have thought stereo should have sounded more full; but I guess they used lower quality drivers this time.

they would same as mini? they aren't bad.

I'm wondering the same. I would assume they're using the same speakers. I'm also int he market for a retina mini sometime soon

iOS 7 is horrendous and should've never seen the light of day, I would accredit it to iOS 7.
