Seems to be the case for nearly every model release I've paid attention to here.

Apple iPhone release process:
  1. Media posts leaks and speculation for weeks
  2. Some people build up expectations of what they think Apple "should" do
  3. Apple announces the new model
  4. A number of people post a flurry of disappointment / hissy-fit threads based on their unfounded expectations of what they think Apple "should have" done.
  5. Apple receives tons of preorders (when offered) and people line up at the stores in advance of release day. Pepper this with a few extreme folks camping out for days and the occasional Woz sighting.
  6. Apple sells tons of phones
  7. Some number of OCD individuals get torqued about some imperfection or issue that affects a small portion of devices and generate an epic "xyz-gate" thread on MacRumors
  8. A portion of these people return / exchange their device repeatedly seeking the absolutely perfect device.
  9. Apple (presumably) addresses any real production or software issues in the weeks following release.
  10. Rest of the world looks on amusedly at the people so wrapped up in an inanimate electronic gadget and goes on about its business. :D
  11. Repeat cycle in a few months

This post here should get it's own thread :D

spot on my man. this should be copied and posted to every troll post/topic in the coming days/weeks.

Simple-call and ask.

It would be nice if it was simple enough as that. Unfortunately, no one in customer service has the integrity to know answers to such simple questions. People are aware they can call. That is why people turn to forums to get better information from people with experience. Sadly, many forums are overrun with trolls who like to post meaningless comments like "just call."

I plan on going to the apple store about 5:00am

After last years debacle at two different Verizon stores on launch day and got screwed at both of them. They gave tickets out to like a 100 people, everyone stood in lines for at least a couple hours...Finally when you got in the stores they said they had received only 10 phones, both were coperate stores also. What a joke, standing in line for hours, they could have at least told people outside they were out after the 10 were sold.

Anyway...I eventually showed up to the apple store around 10:00am to a line of about 300 people..They had tons of phones left and the crowd was about another 100 behind me by the time they ran out. So i figure 5:00am i should be golden.

I don't really think there'll be a huge line at the Apple store in the mall near my office - but I'll plan to get there at around 6 AM.

I'm gonna go by and ask what last year was like as well. Hopefully I can get in and get out - though I'm sure my upgrade situation will cause issues.....

I need the phone on day 1, so:

Plan A - purchase online at midnight on 9/20 ONLY if I can pick it up at an Apple store the same day.

Plan B - if above plan is not an option, call off work and wait in line a couple of hours before 8:00 am:(

why do you 'need' the phone on day one?

-------

I will order online w/ AT&T (since I can't w/ apple) if I can do it at midnight of the 20th, if I have to wait until morning then I will walk to the corporate AT&T store and see how bad the line is since it's just a 10min walk from my apt.

meh

going to go to my carrier a few weeks after see if there is any. since my contract is due to be updated.. if not wait till there is im sure ios7 on my 4s will keep me occupied for a month or 2

I'm going go at 10am and hope there are not sold out..I'm from ottawa so going hope for not many people on line

Well I don't need it, but I figure if it's possible to get it on the first day then why not go for it?:p

Gonna avoid the lines and order online at midnight the 20th. I must be in the minority but I really like the space gray color.

Im heading to the Carrier store in my small town of 8,000. Chances are I'm 1 of 10 people in town that actually give a crap about this stuff and I grab one. That is, if my small town carrier even gets one that day. If I strike out I'll attempt to get one online.

I'm hoping the carriers (Verizon specifically) allow you to order at 3:01 am est on the 20th, and allow in store pickup that same day. I cannot make it to the Apple store (about 1 1/2 hours away), whereas a Verizon corporate store is a 5 minute drive.

Edit: I should point out I hope they allow you to RESERVE your phone online, then go into the store to activate it. Guaranteeing you will walk out with one on launch day. From what I've read, Apple will do more of a request system, where you aren't guaranteed the phone on launch day.

So just spoke with a friend of mine who is some kind of upper management deal at Apple Store. Inventory Control Specialist or something like that...

According to him and take it however you choose, The orders for the 5S should be live at 12am just like the pre-order would be. The stores will open at 8am and according to him "Should have more than enough in supply". Here is the kicker...There will be no option to pick up in store. You order online you ship it to your house. If you want the phone on launch day you must go to the store.

Now I asked him was this all about creating hype for what some are calling a "lackluster" phone. He was told that Apple wanted their customers old and new to experience feeling of the anticipation and excitement that comes with waiting in line with other Apple fans again or for the first time. They consider it part of "the Apple experience"...I think that's just BS team building poppycock.

My opinion? They don't want to deal with all the hassles of keeping pre-orders and store shipments for however many countries organized for 2 phone launches and chose the 5C to make available for preorder instead of the 5S.

For all we know it could have been a coin toss in TC's office.

Anyway, I'm going to start trying to order my 5S at 12am on Thursday night...Just to be on the safe side

My guess is they have sales data over the past few years on the number of people buying brand new iPhones on launch day.

They also had ample shipment last year and did not run of stock with the 5.

So I'm sure they already know how much inventory they need to have basically making pre-orders worthless.

Now with the 5C, they aren't so sure about how many people will want to buy the cheaper, less advanced, phone. Thus the preorders.

If anyone is reading this, don't bother ordering online, just goto store launch day.

Probably going to wait a month or two before I get mine, if at all. The 5S isn't really a compelling upgrade from the 5. One of the reasons I want the 5S is only because I've upgraded to the newest one every year since the first iPhone. Stupid reason I know, but I just don't want to break my "tradition." Haha.

struggling why apple has changed what has worked well. Apple Store online opening for orders a week ahead of launch, you buy online and the phone is delivered on launch day - it's nuts that they are not doing that and it will cause chaos in the stores on launch day. I bought iPhone ipad that way for 3 years and it worked well in my view. I wonder if stock is more limited that we think.

Neil.

I will be ordering online on Sept. 20. I am disappointed that there is no preordering like in the past; delivered on launch day. That's ok, as long as I don't have to wait in lines.

My question is...when will the iPhone 5S ship and when will we receive it?

And slightly off topic, but how do I complete an upgrade swap using my wife's upgrade eligibility the most seemless way without causing any service interruptions? Order the iPhone 5S using her line and swap SIMs when I receive it?

I got an email from apple:

Buy iPhone 5s from the Apple Online Store
after 12:01 a.m. PST on September 20. Or visit
your favorite Apple Retail Store starting
