And when you press zoom button on Mac windows, it's not actually maximize as in Windows. Things are different in both OS, and Apple would like to differ it a bit more..

You just have to get used to it, and over time you will lose the pain. It's a cold turkey change, but maybe you'd be thankful Apple did so

Apple would like to differ? *shakes head*

Anybody who knows anything about computer history knows Apple's Zoom to Content was the first and far superior implementation. Windows "maximize" is actually the lazy implementation of this (coding to fit a window to its content is much more complex than simply stretching it to the edges of the screen).

There are many thing wrong with this statement. History is fact, what you deem superior is not. While you may think that Apple's implementation is superior (and in Lion, it does function as Maximize), that doesn't make it so for everyone.

Windows "maximize" is actually the lazy implementation of this (coding to fit a window to its content is much more complex than simply stretching it to the edges of the screen).

Simplicity and laziness are far from the same thing. Just because something is simple, doesn't mean it's lazy. It could mean it's elegant. Look at some of the elegant simplicity in OS X. Just because the coding is complex doesn't mean that it's better. I can code a simple file operation in 2 lines of code or 20. Which is better?

You're most definitely entitled to your own opinion, but please don't pass it off as fact.

are you sure that there is not an option to turn them on under system preferences>apearance? I don't have Lion yet, but just wondering. I hate to be the 50th one to offer you an option you don't like OP, but how about a Magic Trackpad?. Mice are so 80's anyway...:D

Time to get with the flow mate!

There are no more scroll buttons any more.

Buy a Magic Trackpad

or

Buy a Magic Mouse

or

Buy a mouse with a scroll wheel. :D

there IS a way to show the scroll bars !

Don't go back to Snow Leopard !

Just go to System preferences > general > show scroll bars > always

Have fun with Lion !

I knew they removed the scroll bars in Lion, but I think they need some indication somewhere that the window is scrollable. I had just installed Lion and was on the phone talking to someone while logging in. I was staring at the "How scrolling works" intro screen but not really reading it. I was clicking, scrolling and doing things to make it go (not wanting to click the red circle to close it because it said Assistant and thought there may be another step). It was only when I read that they wanted you to scroll the text in the white window to continue (button at bottom) that I could continue. It was not intuitive at all that the text in the window continued at it looked like it stopped at the end of a paragraph. They need a really faded out symbol at the bottom right corner or something that indicates there is more.

Did Apple just on the Scrollbar column without us knowing about it!

I'm puzzled, The first time I installed Lion, it was without any physical representation of a scrollbar unless you need to scroll a long file in Safari or any application. Now I see a scrollbar existing! What gives? How did Apple does it without any updates or me knowing about it? Yesterday was not there and today was there...the scrollbar...

Scrolls too fast

I use iPhoto to go through my photos (currently more than 14,000). I liked the arrows to scroll in iPhoto and was disappointed when I realized they were gone in Lion.

I have an an Apple mouse with the little scroll ball but it scrolled way too rapidly in iPhoto. I tried going into system preferences/mouse to slow the rate down. Unfortunately, it slows the rate way down in Firefox but had no effect in iPhoto.:(

That's not how I do it. I don't want to have to find the scrollbar knob and click and drag. I just want to click. I keep going to click the arrows and they are not there. It is infuriating.

I have news for you, friend - Apple doesn't care how you do it. They care about how most people are going to do it, and in Apple's eyes that involves gestures. Sorry, but that's the cold fact. =/

Apple is changing how they approach computing. They are unifying the visual experience between all of their devices as well as how you interact with them. "Legacy" doesn't mix well with Apple, which means users either adapt to the new way of doing things or simply move on to a new platform. You're even seeing this change with Microsoft and Windows, where Windows 8 will adopt a touch-first UI that will span across their phone and xbox products as well.

Computers are changing, and that's a good thing. It's time to start realizing that or get left behind ;).

Apps that support the "new" scroll bars will behave as Safari does, where they are visible as you scroll and disappear when you stop. Older apps that don't support this or choose not to implement it will have their scrollbars always visible. Firefox is an example of this, where the scrollbars are always visible. In the dev and canary builds of Chrome, the scrollbars disappear.

These are growing pains that will get ironed out as more apps make the transition.

Up and down arrows on your keyboard. Boom. It's even handier than the scroll arrows were!

On a side note though, OP, it's 2011, you should probably have a mouse with a scroll wheel of some sort :p

Clicking the arrow buttons for scrolling in 2011.

Are you kidding me?

What, does anyone still use the scrollbar? Just use the multitouch to scroll. WAY better.

Haha yeah for the most part the scroll bar is pointless. BUT it has a few uses.

I have mine set to show when I'm scrolling because

1. you see where you are on the page
2. you can jump to specific parts of the page

Otherwise, for actual scrolling... it's the kind of thing my mom would do.

The up/down buttons are still there, just invisible. Move your cursor to the right edge and tap or scroll a small vertical bar appears containing the the location indicator. You can tap on any location in that narrow bar. just like the buttons only larger and better:)

What's notable in this thread isn't that someone uses the arrow buttons--after all, they've been there forever, so why wouldn't people have gotten used to using them?

What's truly notable is how many people are snide, nasty jerks about it. It's embarrassing to witness.

OMG. Lion has some great new features. But there is something I find to be a fatal flaw. They removed the arrow buttons from the scrollbars. I use those constantly. Now, you can't click to go down lines. You can only click to go down an entire page at a time. It is intolarable.

I am swicthing mack to Snow Leopard until they fix it or somoene makes an extension.

Does anyone know what software there is for customizing your interface? I know there is, but I don't remember what they are called. I pray that they will scrollbar arrow key options.

Apple is moving away from certain things by simplifying how the user interacts with the OS. Please don't take this as anything other then a suggestion. I know you say you like to use the scroll arrow buttons, maybe you need to just try the new way for a week or so before you give up. Go out and buy yourself a mouse with a scroll wheel or the trackpad. Try it for 1 week and if you still hate it at the end of the week return the mouse or trackpad.

Sometimes you have to try news things to appreciate them. When I first tried the reverse scrolling it felt a little strange because I was not used to it. After a few days the reverse scrolling felt more natural to me.
