The description of the issue is absolutely true. I have been camping out for iPhones for a while now. It often becomes pretty heated in line.

If you are an AT&T customer, you should better try an AT&T store located on some highway 10-20 miles away from a city.
Even in NJ, stores like those have no one lining up until midnight before a morning launch.

Or you should go to an apple store that is inside some Premium mall, like one in Short Hills, NJ.
The people living in towns nearby, are too rich to care for an iPhone launch and standing in a line for the same.
Me and my friends bought iPhone 5 and later releases, on the launch days around 3PM at Short Hills, NJ.
Wait time in a line is never more than 15 minutes. They handle you reservation cards in that line. Each card reserves a particular type of iPhone (with fixed color, storage size and carrier) and has a unique reservation number, good for that day. You may take as many as you want. They always had 100s of those cards available to be distributed (even around 3pm in the afternoon).

I love Apple's products, but I'm pretty disgusted that they appear to be deliberately targeting the homeless of Portland.

Homeless people are discriminated against in many forms and often find it difficult to get the employment that would earn their way out of poverty. This was one way they could earn a few bucks whist doing a valuable service for the global iPhone community.

Is it because you embarrassed to see less-than-privileged people in your stores, Apple?

It's not really an opinion.
It is exactly like Italy and its regions, Switzerland and its cantons, or Mexico and its states.

Also, US is a country. States are states.
United States is composed of fifty states.
United States is singular.
United States is a different entity with different jurisdiction than each of the fifty independent States (of which four are Commonwealths)
I understand the relationship between the country and the states is not an opinion. That's not what I was referring to. I was saying that whether the sentence sounds awkward or not is entirely the opinion of the reader/listener. In this case, while the sentence is grammatically correct as written, I personally find it awkward. Mainly because I read U.S. as "United States" and not "you-ess". Other folks, perhaps you, parse that sentence differently, so maybe it doesn't sound awkward.

I can understand that for the US, or China. But Japan?

The only explanation would be the dozens of chinese, who come to Japan to buy tons of stuff like baby diapers and such. Maybe they come also to Japan to buy tons of iPhones. It's pretty close to China.
It is the explanations. For a lot of Chinese, the goods in Japan become cheaper due to the yen depreciating. And yes, there are a LOT of Chinese in Japan, and there are a LOT of them buying iPhones.

what does apple care? They sell a phone either way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is the same as scalpers buying tickets. True fans who really want to go to the show end up paying twice the face value of the tickets because of people who make their living not actually wanting the tickets, but to cause a small monopoly on the product and artificially inflate prices. This is Apple being the good guy.

Understood ;)

Because those who are also local to you, in Vancouver, are then screwed as they'd have to make the 4 hour drive up to Seattle to get a phone, while their closest Apple store would be less than 15 miles.

Would it be fair for it to be 'for Oregonians only'? How discriminatory.

BL.
Did not mean to be disrespectful of our neighbors to the north. The situation you describe is not unique to just you. Oregonians from southern Oregon have a far greater drive then you do to Seattle. The line needs drawing somewhere. The main reason you drive you to Oregon is not the distance to Seattle my friend, it is the No Sales Tax. You cheat your state out of revenue, that is discriminatory.

I don't think Apple is discriminating against anyone. They are simply drawing that line at some point, like someone said above.

The launches have become ridiculous. All the foreigners and homeless that are buying only to scalp etc. It has nothing to do with Apple not wanting the "homeless" to ruin their image.

Apple is attempting to make it better for those who are trying to upgrade their phone for themselves and family. Trying to get rid of some of these people who are only buying for profit and to move into other countries. These are the people who make it harder for the rest of us who want to upgrade our phone...

No argument there. However, southern Oregonians were just compensated. They no longer have to drive to Redding to get to the closest In-n-Out Burger. :D

But that is part of the problem. How many people make the trip across I-205 or I-5 to buy goods in Oregon, and come back into WA to save the additional 7.75% per dollar in sales tax? From what I've heard from others in this forum (I'm in Sacramento; my wife went to the blind school in Vancouver), WA police are now starting to crack down on that, and are patrolling some of the stores just across the river (I know there's a Costco, Target, and Best Buy off of I-205, near PDX) where if they see the pattern, they'll pull them over for a few questions.

Apple can't prevent that without profiling the people who would be coming into their stores, so their only choice is to allow all (do nothing), or eliminate all. Unfortunately, the only course of action left to them is to eliminate all.

I suppose I shouldn't admit that I want to watch people buying for the sharks get turned away after the doors open. Is there a sensitive way to communicate my feelings (summarized below)?

You do bring up another point. If the sharks get turned away, that would mean that for the stores in these states, there would be more supply for legitimate buyers. For example: say you had a reservation for your phone under AUP. You could pick up another phone under AUP there. Technically while you would be getting a 2nd phone, since you'd have a reservation, you're already in, plus you're getting another phone the same way you reserved your first phone.. plus, more of a chance that the phone would be in stock.

They were filming a block from my house last week (NE Fremont and Alameda). After they left I took the kids to Hollywood for some ice cream and they were filming near the library so I got to see Fred twice. :)

Haha cool! The show is hilarious. It makes me want to go visit :)

I've got none reserved any place and have the -what seems unusual - ability to wait until there is plenty of supply of the model I will buy.

Go figure!

If you don't care to be first to get the device, I do admit it's strange that you come to these threads and respond to posts like mine, but to each his own

They're wasting their time. There's no way they'll pull over more than a fraction of a percent, and there's nothing they can even do on the spot because they have no way to prove you're not declaring this at some point. What a way to lose out on even more tax dollars lol.

I've heard the same thing about the NH/MA border. I can't say I've ever seen it in practice, and I drive that route every day. In Salem you'll always see more MA cars in the lot than any other.

I do admit that sarcasm may be lost on you?

As an old fart I just don't understand the frenzy about having to be first in getting something one hasn't had for an entire life.

Maybe, just maybe my posts about patience make some people pause and think what is important in life?
Hint : It's not receiving an iPhone IMMEDIATELY after release.

I'm well aware that there are things more important in life. Why my reserving a phone for pickup in New Hampshire makes you feel the need to get on your soap box is beyond me. I absolutely will not stand in line again, because you're right, it's just not important enough to me. Logging on to Apple's site and clicking my mouse about half a dozen times, to me, doesn't constitute much work. But again, to each his own.

Standing in line with all the chaos...no way!!!

My fingers will also do the work each morning from my computer in the comfort of my house ....to get one reserved eventually :) (Hopefully soon)!

What store? I reserved at Bridgeport. Kinda happy knowing I won't also have to deal with a line for walk ups. Although, I bet there will still be some clueless people that due line up.
Portland downtown. I know, I know. What was I thinking. I'm driving up Thursday and crashing with friends. I like being able to just show up mid morning (when my appointment is) and knowing there is one waiting for me. Of course I'll still show up early.

And Yeah, I'm in southern Oregon. Okay fast food burgers now being here aside, the fact that I am driving four and half hours to pick up my phone does seem ridiculous. (But I really want to join the apple upgrade program, so it's worth it.) Fortunately next year at this time I will be living far closer to a apple store, so it won't be such a long drive.
