No, they are trying to eliminate others profiting from their product through unjust methods. The buying up by brokers limits supply and thus prices go up on the gray market. There are very many people prepared to pay a bit more to get it a few weeks or months before they become more available. Look at the developed Apple TV's that have just started to surface. People pay thousands of dollars for them. Crazy.

In the end these prices are bad for Apple's brand image and that is what Apple wants to avoid. This is not about homeless people.

Jeez, did you have to post that? It sounded so much better to think Apple cared about the exploitation of the underprivileged around the globe. :apple:

Look, I know what loitering is. I mean for people who are actually homeless just sitting around the Apple Store.
it's still not loitering.. if i pay a homeless dude $20 to buy a phone for me, they're not loitering.. it's also not a crime for me (or he) to do that..
if it were illegal then apple wouldn't have to do what they're doing re: the topic.. they'd just have the cops kick these people (the sharks & their minions) out of there..

it should be apparent that apple isn't doing this because of homeless people or whatever.. it clearly has to do with no-tax states or else they'd do this in all states.. nyc has gazillions of people lined up to buy iphones that aren't actually buying the phones for themselves.

I'm not talking about paying someone. I'm saying if they have no intention on buying anything and they're just propped up against an apple building with their clothes and stuff all over the ground then that's loitering on Apple's property and Apple has a right to tell them to leave.

oh.. right. apple can tell them to leave or have them removed by the cops in that situation.
i guess we're talking about different things.. srry

This is good. I remember buying the iPhone 4 in London and standing in a 1 hour line with a number of people that basically rotated around to the back of the line each time after they had bought one iPhone. They had bags full of the things, paid cash Sopranos style (several thousands with a rubber band around them) and the staff didn't care at all.
I've seen it to except all the people here were paying with Apple Store gift cards

Regarding the awkward phrasing of "4 U.S. states" ...

I think I would have written it thusly, "four states, China, ..." as Macrumors is a U.S. based website and the reader should understand in that the story is referring to four individual states, based on the context.

Also, I would consider listing the four states individually, along with the international locations affected, although that would be a little wordy.

In the end, everyone has their own opinion and as long as it's grammatically correct, it's OK.

So, less camaraderie, more having to deal with idiots. I'm not going to wait in line again. It was vaguely amusing that one time but not worth it.

Agreed. Last year I was briefly in the wrong line and the meth-head in front of me immediately started trying to sell me the iPhone she was standing in line to buy. She was still in line when I walked out with my new 6+ and I resisted the urge to go over and try to sell it to her.

The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland...

They were filming a block from my house last week (NE Fremont and Alameda). After they left I took the kids to Hollywood for some ice cream and they were filming near the library so I got to see Fred twice. :)

Because they're trying to eliminate the exploitation of the homeless. I don't see anything wrong with this.

And good on them for that.

Also I'm sure Apple prefers people buy thier units in thier home countries. The cheapest ones are in the US.

My experience has been pretty much the entire line of people at the Washington Square and Bridgeport location is Chinese kids and adults. I'm with the above person....I feel like I'm in line to enter the country or something :0/

What gets me, an Oregon resident, we are being penalized for no sales tax. Why not verify Apple ID with local ID so we can purchase in store. Seems like a simple solution as opposed to NO in store sales. My rant for the day.

Can't wait for all the chinese scalpers coming out of the woodworks and storm the Apple stores. Japan and Hong Kong have been hit quite bad with the mainland Chinese coming in hordes to shop.

I agree! At least this method tho, maybe less scalpers and people buying phones only to sell etc.... More for us hopefully ;)

what does apple care? They sell a phone either way...

Customer experience.

The scalpers and their paid minions aren't as polite or interesting to the other customers in line as the people waiting hours to buy a new iPhone for themselves. The early lines in front of the Apple Store had much more of a party atmosphere before the percentage of scalpers went way up.

And it looked better on the evening news with less homeless people in line.
