What a weird video. I guess they are just wanting you to buy a keyboard fire your iPad

Actually, the new Bay Trail tablets are running full-blown Windows 8. And Windows RT - while constrained compared to Windows 8 - is certainly not as restricted as iOS. While those devices will not run x86 applications, you do still have desktop functionality when you need it.

Desktop functionality for what exactly? The only thing that runs like a true desktop application on Windows RT is Office. Everything else is touch based!

haha that was a good concept. Unfortunately I have never seen an iPad run out of battery even after 2-3 days of use, nor have I ever felt the need for a keyboard...and my friends who do have a keyboard case like the lady in the commercial did!

I highly recommend you spend a little (and I do mean a little) time with "the New iPad", a.k.a. the iPad 3. Ridiculously short battery life, runs hot, actually shows battery charge state drop while it's plugged in as you use it.

I love my iPad, but MS stuff still has built in Office though - it's still a killer app in my opinion for when you need to interchange documents with the huge amount of corporates out there.

MS has approached tablets in the wrong way but the despite the negative press I think it's better than what most people give it credit for.

I have that one and it is fine. Could yours maybe be faulty? Do you use the iPad charger or an iPhone charger? Whenever I use my iPhone charger on the iPad it indeed drains during usage, but that's not a construction/design problem.

Bay Trail tablets like the ASUS one mentioned in the post you responded to, do not run Windows RT, they run the full Windows 8.

And Windows RT still lets you manage files, use desktop web browsers and do other tasks beside Office on the desktop. It's certainly limited compared to the full Windows 8, but still far more capable than something like an iPad.

Here's a couple of examples:

Which isn't necessarily a good thing on a tablet. Office hasn't been optimized for touch yet. Seriously, I couldn't make this up if I tried. :D
The whole point of these devices is that they can act both as a tablet, and can do serious work when you're at a desk, instead of requiring a separate device for that sort of thing.

Right here, sitting on my desk, is the iPhone 1. Bought it on day one. There is no older iPhone battery than this phone. It sits in a charger day after day just for looks. My daughter was playing games on it for an hour or so about 4 days ago and it still has a 35% charge.

Apple knows battery life and quality. But a fast charging battery? That is something to attack the iPad about. Too bad they buried the lead. A keyboard? Well, yes they're nice and they're about $30 on Amazon. So, price - no better. Keyboard, not included but expensive. Fast charging battery? Mine lasts for days. I'll charge it at home while I sleep thanks. iOS? I'll take it over any other any day. Why buy this thing? That's right, the battery charges fast and you can buy an expensive keyboard. WTH?

That's "buried the LEDE".

This makes sense strategically. I've always said that text input is the missing link on the iPad. Apple never figured that out. On the other hand, I'm not sure that Nokia or Microsoft have either.

The original Mac had the mouse, which changed the game. The iPod had the scrollwheel, which made it tenable to navigate thousands of songs. The iPhone had the touch screen, and wasn't expected to be used for a lot of text-input so an on-screen keyboard sufficed (although I think Android may have surpassed Apple with this in the ability to switch out keyboards).

If the iPad is meant to be a laptop replacement, it fails with regard to text-input. There was no big gain in input like each of Apple's previous devices had (mouse, scrollwheel, touch screen).

If I were Apple, this is something I would focus on. There might be a solution. Not that I know what it is. But Apple has a lot of resources to think about these things. Microsoft at least did something, with the keyboard case. If Apple sold a first-party equivalent, I think it would be quite popular.

Could Siri be that solution?

I spent more time and energy trying to make out what the guy was saying than understanding the point of the video. Because of his accent (and the girls), the point of the video was missed on me. Like others here, at first I thought the audio was out of sync.

Bad commercial.

Show me the Apple logo on the laptop.

They are having a poke at all the other tablet manufacturers. Yes, they do say it's as thin as a pencil (A reference to the iPad), but if they wanted to poke fun directly at Apple they could of used a real iPad and MacBook Pro.

Guess what? They didn't!

In your first post you claim that you didn't think they were targeting Apple or iPad at all, now you admit there are direct references to Apple and their tablet.

Not that I have to show you anything but the ad shows the iconic (as Apple's logo) design of a Mac Book in a black shell.

I never said they were exclusively targeting Apple but they sure fired some shots their way, which is normal as the iPad is the tablet to beat.

Also I don't seem to be the only one to notice the MacBook in the ad:

I like how there is a MacBook Pro in a Nokia ad. :D

I don't know if you are just in denial or what you are being so defensive about Nokia taking shots at the competition but the facts are there, make of them what you want.

I personally think it is a shame they show the competition's product more than their own in these expensive to run ads.

On a side note, there is no such thing as:

…they could of used a real iPad…

Next time try using: …they could have used…

Cheers ;)

This is one of the worst ads I've ever seen. Horrendously bad. Further, there is not one single valid point (other than maybe the fact that the Nokia has a full version of Office on it - but that will likely change when Microsoft releases Office for the iPad with full cloud support).

So basically Nokia spend 90% of the advert describing how thin, light, portable etc. the iPad is, and that it's a great way to watch movies...before spending the last few seconds showing off their plasticky offering.

shot. foot. in.

Haha, "Wrong Tablet"? Maybe Nokia should have gone with "Wrong CEO", or perhaps "Wrong Smartphone OS". Another insult to their own legacy.

They did not want to promote Apple (by showing the logo) but the guy is clearly using an iPad (what else could it be?) and MacBook with a clamshell cover (to cover the recognizable aluminium body.)

While I do agree an iPad cannot fully substitute for a laptop with full OS (Mac, Windows, Linux, whatever) it can be pretty damn useful which is why "Everyone wants one" (quote from Nokia's commercial. There is a reason everyone still wants one. Gadgets that are not useful and just cool looking do not last 5+ generations with record breaking sales despite being more expensive than the competition)

Was anyone else really annoyed by "negative Nancy"? What kind of friend is that? If she prefers her Nokia "Surface" that is great (Windows 8 on a good tablet is pretty cool) why does she keep popping up trying to "get" this guy? She is obviously stalking him trying to sell the Nokia model (so that she is not the only one with one) I am also very sure that some people who own a tablet with Windows 8 one them will sometimes use a "real computer" when the tablet is not the best tool for the job (which will happen with ANY tablet. there is no "one perfect computer for all tasks")

This ad brought to you by the same SOOPER-GENIOUS advertising d00ds responsible for "Windows 8.1: ****** yeah, it has OUTLOOK!" ;)

That's "buried the LEDE".

That goofy concept wasn't in use when I was in journalism school. And if they wanted to distinguish things from lead (the element) they should have called it leed. Then we could bury the leed in an article about Led zeppelin.

Just Bitter not Better

Although my iPad 3 LTE does seem to drain quickly with specific usage, I think it is a great mobile tablet. I expect it to make the day and a half.

You can tell from these ads that the Redmond team is still bitter about the super successful "I'm a Mac - I'm a PC" campaign. Move on guys.

They still don't get it.

And that is 1:17 of brutal-to-watch video.

That was spectacularly bad - it was almost like a spoof of an Apple competitor ad! :D

There _are_ some potential advantages [to Surface-type products], that could be easily communicated in a marketing campaign, it’s just baffling how badly MS (and partners/BUs) keep missing.

What a load of rubbish.

Oh as for doing real work on a tablet. I use my iPad, I have a logitech thin keyboard and it works great. Every day on film sets. I have written Commercials and TV shows using Celtx. I even edit on set first draft using iMovie and export to FCPX.

That’s his SOP - there’s a few users on here that pop into iOS device threads posting incoherent ramblings about said devices inability to do “real work”. They have no idea about the huge community of medical professionals, and field investigators (just to name a couple that I’m engaged with) using the iPad because it provides a unique solution that’s superior to a notebook. :)

Commercials like this one are so ridiculous when you can easily added a cover with a keyboard to the iPad at any time. The only people that are swayed by these ads are the people that work at Microsoft/Nokia.
