As I used to say to my son: "once you discover women, you'll get over all that crap".

I tried the Razor Maxx and the original Incredible for a couple weeks. Both felt "cheap" to me. At least compared to the iphone 4s, IMO. I dont see how anything plastic can feel as solid and sound as the glass and metal of the iphone.

I just took my iphone out of its Otterbox Commuter and cleaned it, as I like to do most evenings. I love holding it and twirling it around in my hands. Its solid, smooth, sleek, rounded yet square, and just plain feels good in the hands. I cant say that about both Droid phones I owned.

My buddy got the S3 a couple weeks ago. I got to hold it and check it out for a few minutes the other day. It also felt "cheap" to me, at least compared to my iphone.

Have you held any of the Android/WP7 devices that don't have a removable battery? If so, what did you think? Some examples are the HTC ONE X, Moto Razer/ Razer max, Nokia Lunia 900, etc.

My next question, and this one isn't necessarily directed towards you specifically, is "what exactly is this substantial feel?" Are these phones falling apart? Do they stop working after a certain point? In other words, what's the difference in terms of choosing a product?

No, my coworkers only have the Nexus and the S3, so that is my only comparison
No, they aren't falling apart, it is just the feel that they have
Honestly, they feel like a toy to me
I am not saying they feel that way to others, but that is my thought when I have held one

But do they feel cheap?

Yes, to me they feel cheap
That is certainly subjective, but that is my opinion

I don't think Apple is the only company capable of a brilliant design and aesthetic.

I do think Apple helped bring design and aesthetic to a higher level.

The 4 and 4S are really an amazing design. They really are lovely devices and not like anything you would expect from a phone.

Steve Jobs, I think, hinted at the inspiration during the iPhone4 keynote.

Mine is based on my own evaluation of the two devices, not some Apple blinders

But if you are blinded by Apple how do you know you are not blinded by Apple. People who are brainwashed don't know they're brainwashed.

I think your one of those people that thinks lighter weight "feels cheap." Your brain is having a hard time understanding how something bigger than the 3Gs feels similar in weight (SGS3 133 Grams, 3GS 135 Grams). Get over it. Heavier doesn't mean better built. The 4S is too heavy as a mobile device, especially for one as small as it is. Mobile devices need to be light. This is just logical.

The only other make/device I cherish is Sony's flagship Z Series Laptop. I have a MBA and a Z. The 13" Z is very edgy and innovative with the latest specs. and at 2.4lbs. it's so lightweight; the reiteration of the Z just gets better better. The iPhone, MBA, and Sony Z are my favorite product lineup.

If any current cell phone feels"Heavy" I recommend push ups and high protein diet for the next 90 days.

And cheap feels cheap. Its not a weight issue, but a build materials and design issue.

Humans have been using metal and glass to make things for a few thousand years. They feel natural to the human mind and hand, and we associate value with things made from metal and glass to this day.

Plastic, not so much. Industrial design, artistic inspiration and chemical engineering has made plastic more palatable, which is why the Lumia 900 and HTC One X are praised for their design aesthetic.

Samsung, LG, and Motorola just haven't gotten the memo yet.

This is a nice looking design, and it feels "solid" to the touch.

This looks and feels like ass, and the faux metal trim is laughable.

I usually change my phone a lot for reasons like boring, slow, not interactive, etc, etc.

I have been using iPhone 4S for almost a year and love it a lot. This phone is stooopid. It can communicate with the user very well, icon, font, screen, and everything is gorgeous. Very easy to use, the icon, the flow animation, etc are natural and my 69yr old father (tech dummy) could understand it quickly.

Android is good, but you can feel that the default color and everything are kinda dark and gloomy.

I still think the 4/4S is stunning.

You just don't see that same commitment to design and materials in other phones, especially not anything made by Samsung.

Though, I do like the HTC One X. Pretty amazing design and build as well.

Ironic, since the HOX and S3 are made from the exact same material.

But in terms of expensive build materials, there is only one phone that utilizes steel and kevlar, which IMO looks better than glass and metal, and that is the Droid Razr. I would not personally buy it, but I love the Kevlar weave.

Actually, if it had an Apple Logo on the back, I would hold it in my hand, note the creakiness of the plastic, and dismiss it as a counterfeit.

What did you drink? Creakiness and Galaxy S III? I will accept every argument about GSIII but this one. It is one of the most rigid phones I have ever held. This is just a lie. Go hold one and make it creak please.

Don't forget Sony. Their hardware is usually behind and so is software (still releasing GB phones) but their design is one of the best IMO.

I would have kept my One X if it didn't have the annoying multi-tasking "feature". Unfortunately samsung is ridiculously easy to hack and get annoying stuff out of the way than HTC and it is a pity because their designs are meh.

As I used to say to my son: "once you discover women, you'll get over all that crap".

Heh, so true.

Ridicule all you like
I own a 3GS and it feels solid and substantial
My co worker has a Galaxy S3 and it feels very different
I have no problem saying it feels cheap
So, no, plastic doesn't necessarily mean it feels cheap, but comparing the two... yes, one feels substantial, the other does not

To each his own, and others are entitled to their opinion
Mine is based on my own evaluation of the two devices, not some Apple blinders

I know what you're saying.

My mrs doesn't like the fact that my S3 is so light, she prefers a more hefty phone with some metal in it.

The galaxy phones don't feel substantial because they're so light. Doesn't bother me, but it does others.

I still look at my iPhone 4 and think it is as beautiful as the first day I bought it.

Most gadgets lose their shine after a few months, but my iPhone 4... another story, and the retina display is still amazing

Anyone else agree?
I agree, but the touchscreen 'feeling' definitely feels different (because the original coating against fingerprints has gone off after intensive use). It is, however, still a lovely device.

How is it too heavy?
Do you feel uncomfortable because of the weight when you hold it?
Does it strain your hands?

Seriously, it doesn't do any of that. So there's nothing wrong. The cheap plastic makes the samsung feel like a toy.

Has any one seen the back cover of the Samsung Galaxy SIII? A week old baby could break that thing, its like a 1mm thick. If only Samsung made the design and used the same materials as the HTC One X, it would make the device even better. I reckons that's one of the main downfalls of the SIII, the build quality. Guess it was partly to blame because of Apples patents. Business is business I guess.

People in glass houses - the iPhone back is not exactly known for its sturdiness. The glass shatters fairly easily.

I haven't held the S3, but I am concerned about the back of my iPhone

Got to agree with this. The HTC is the most beautiful phone design I've ever seen. Too bad they hamstrung it with only 16gigs and isn't expandable. It's like they're trying to limit it's appeal.

I'd also add the Google Nexus in with the very good looking designs:

Beautiful camera and you can see how both have classic and clean lines.

There are some android phones that have beautiful designs, but in general, I've not really cared for the Samsung phones.

The Lumina 900 is definitely a beautiful phone as well - too bad MS/Nokia shot themselves in the foot with no wp8 upgrade path for this phone.

iphone 4 design

I love the design of my iphone 4 so much that I protect it by surrounding it in a cheap plastic case....???

I still love my iPhone 3G. I bought it 3 years ago and I still love it. Running iOS 4.2.1

I think Android is a better OS than iOS but the handsets fail the OS.

But if you are blinded by Apple how do you know you are not blinded by Apple. People who are brainwashed don't know they're brainwashed. :roll eyes:

Funny how an opinion that differs from yours means someone else is obviously brainwashed
It may interest you to know that brainwashing, although a convenient explanation, isn't the only possible explanation
Maybe I just know what I like and don't like and it differs from you
Exactly how does Apple "brainwash" and "blind" anyway?
I use my own opinion, taste and needs to make my own choices
The whole Apple brainwashing argument is ludicrous
Apple makes consumer electronic products, not mind altering devices

I think your one of those people that thinks lighter weight "feels cheap."

I'm so sorry, but once again, you are wrong
I appreciate light devices that are well crafted, like my iPad (and BTW, I don't consider my 4s a heavy device)
The Kindle Fire is a heavy device, and I don't like the feel of it at all
Had one and gave it away, and that person returned it to me because they didn't like it either
But again, that is my opinion

Your brain is having a hard time understanding how something bigger than the 3Gs feels similar in weight (SGS3 133 Grams, 3GS 135 Grams). Get over it.

Actually, my brain works just fine, thank you very much
And surprisingly, I am able to evaluate and make determinations on my own without your guidance
I have a 4s and I have examined and held a Nexus and an S3
It isn't just weight and it isn't just that it is plastic
It is about the overall look and feel that it gives me, which is personal and subjective to me
Therefore, I don't really need to get over anything after all

Heavier doesn't mean better built.

Yay!! You finally got something right!
You are correct, heavier doesn't mean better built, and I never said it did
But in the case of the 3Gs and the S3, the 3Gs does feel more solid and substantial to me
It feels well crafted and better made in my opinion
Yes, that is a subjective evaluation
You have your opinion and I have mine
Neither is right or wrong, they are different
How is that concept hard to understand?

The 4S is too heavy as a mobile device, especially for one as small as it is. Mobile devices need to be light. This is just logical.

Awe, now you spoiled it, because you are wrong again
If you had said, in your opinion, the 4s is too heavy for a mobile device I could have given that to you
However, the 4s is not too heavy for me and many, many others
In fact, I really like the weight and feel of the 4s (and yes, even the glass)

Good luck on your efforts to convince the world your opinion is right and the only one that matters
You are going to have a long hard road with that

No, my coworkers only have the Nexus and the S3, so that is my only comparison
No, they aren't falling apart, it is just the feel that they have
Honestly, they feel like a toy to me
I am not saying they feel that way to others, but that is my thought when I have held one

I appreciate the input. I was just trying to get an understanding of what people mean. I still don't think I understand any better, but c'est la vie!

----------

(snipped most of your response for brevity)

I think my... "issue", if I can even call it that, is people tend to make a decision of the quality of a product based on a 30 second first impression. Not saying you do this, by the way, but often times the responses are "well I held my friend's cousin's mother's boyfriend's device and it was terrible". For those that are willing to cast something aside that quickly, I would say there is likely some sort of bias going on (by the way I think most people who use the term brainwashing would be better off using the word bias). I have never seen a device that is so terrible that it is simple unusable after a 30 second handling. There comes a point where there is actual opinion, and then there is "I refuse to use anything that isn't Apple". I know people on both sides of the fence. Interestingly, it is my die-hard Android friend who is the tougher of the two groups to reason with. He won't use iPhone BECAUSE it is Apple. Decisions like that are so illogical to me.

----------

Has any one seen the back cover of the Samsung Galaxy SIII? A week old baby could break that thing, its like a 1mm thick.

If you are TRYING to break it with your bare hands, I am sure it would be easier to break than the iPhone 4/4S. If you are dropping it on concrete, I would wager that the iPhone is far more likely to experience some wicked damage. Frankly, I don't base my phone purchases on how tough it would be to remove a back cover on a phone and snap it in half. That "stress test" has absolutely nothing to do with performance and durability in real world conditions.

----------

Another stunning piece of design work here.

I largely agree with your overview. I had stated that the Lumia looks a lot like an Apple design, especially the iPod nano/shuffle line from a few generations back. The unibody and shape just reminds me of Apple. This infuriated some people on the forums. I know because I got about 40 down votes for making the statement. LOL!

FWIW I would have kept the Lumia if the screen was higher res. Sort of glad I didn't since it was basically announced it had reached EOL in terms of Windows Phone updates a short five months after being released... OUCH!
