Has any one seen the back cover of the Samsung Galaxy SIII? A week old baby could break that thing, its like a 1mm thick. If only Samsung made the design and used the same materials as the HTC One X, it would make the device even better. I reckons that's one of the main downfalls of the SIII, the build quality. Guess it was partly to blame because of Apples patents. Business is business I guess.

What's this obsession over the back cover? It's not really part of the phone and it doesn't make the phone more or less solid than it already is. I don't like it either. So I replaced it with an aftermarket that feels a lot nicer. No big deal.

I don't think that many (if any) smartphones react positively to being dropped.

As we are on the subject of comparing the 4S with the S3 I would give both the same degree of care, I don't like protectors, but would expect that if I dropped either on a carpet that I might "get away" with it, if I dropped either on the road I would probably fear the worst, and dropkicking either down the street is definitely not recommended.

Neither of these phones are lauded as robust, because they aren't, so IMHO, the question of which is the "toughest" is moot.

I'd say that is fair enough
I try to take care of my devices as best I can and don't expect them to endure abuse or neglect
But if an unfortunate accident occurs, both of them have proven the ability to survive and destruct unexpectedly

A Fabergé egg is not a mobile device. It is not intended to be carried around in your pocket and used on the go. Something that is to be used that way, maybe shouldn't be made of "finer materials".

Someone shouldn't have a smartphone if they arent capable of dropping it.

See how that works...

You better read what you wrote. Unless you mean that only people that are capable of dropping a smartphone should have one.

See how that works. ;)

And accidents happen.

When you hear terms like brainwashed and fanboy, you know the lucidity of someone's argument gave up the ghost a long time ago.

Now that I have been using the S3 for a couple of weeks, I can say it does have a solid feel and does not "feel" cheap or crappy.

Does the iPhone feel more solid and have more of a 'premium feel'? I would have to say yes. It feels like a brick when you hold it (not in a bad way, just like a solid mass).

Maybe it is the weight distribution or the shape of the S3 that gives an impression of being a lot lighter and more pleasurable to hold in the hand than the iPhone. That said, and since we are talking about vehicles, Apple is the 'Elenor' (1967 GT500) of smartphones; classic, quality design regardless of age and more like a piece of art, while the majority of Android smartphones would be more akin to a BMW M3. Still a nice car and very fast, but no GT500!

This is my dream car. Love the '67 fastback Mustang. I wish I could afford to buy an Elenor

You edited it, yet it still reads the same way.

I think you meant "Someone shouldn't have a smartphone if they aren't capable of not dropping it. :)

Like I said, accidents happen.

Why anyone would go caseless with the 4S or S3 boggles the mind. Without a case both phones are one drop away from a shattered screen. Once you slap a case on them the whole elegant/cheap argument goes out the window. This is what my IP4 looks like with the case installed.

Maybe Samsung phones are designed to be slabs because consumers are supposed to be concentrating on the large, beautiful screen. There must be a reason why Samsung phones are all screen and no body.

Of course you'll stop right there, as you have nothing else to say for the weight of the 4S.

My point was made.. What else was there TO say?

You disagreed. Again, good for you.

Glad to see you stopped while you were behind in logic.

It has nothing to do with logic, but everything to do with opinion. It's unfortunate that you feel your opinion must be right for everyone. but, it's not, no more than mine is.

As for your pathetic attempt to show the cracked screen of SGS3,

It wasn't an attempt nor pathetic. I showed a cracked SGS3 screen. Or rather, Squaretrade did. It's a shame ratio refuse to believe that the almighty SGS3 can't possibly shatter, but it does like all cell phones under the right conditions. And it appears it does so slightly easier than certain other models.

there a good number more cracked 4S screens.

No doubt, considering iPhones have been sold longer than the SGS3 has. It's simple math.

Oh wait...make that screens and backs. As we both know, that lovely glass on the back is a lot more prone to being shattered than the polycarbonate backing of the SGS3. Got any shattered pics of that?

Squaretrade did note the plastic cracked tthe fore the glass. But the point remains: given where the screen is on both devices, people are probably loking at the front a lot more than the back. And at the end of the day, the business ends of both phones are made of the same material.

[quoteYeah...didn't think so. Oh I won't bother to spam you with the endless cracked screens and backs of the 4 and 4S. Of all people, you would think someone with an iPhone would be the last to throw up a pic of a cracked screen of any other device. Glass houses my friend...glass houses.... literally.[/quote]

Let me interrupt your little soliloquy here to point out that no one ever said the iPhone of ANY vintage was bulletproof. I pointed out - accurately and factually - that while you were gleefully pointing out that iPhones can shatter, so can the SGS3.

Point made. Nothing else to be said.

Thanks, for the heads up. Posting on the move is bad for the English language.

Back on topic

Design speaks for itself and to everyone in different ways.

As it turns out, lots of people like the iPhone 4 design. It resonates.

For whatever reason, most other phones don't, or don't invoke an emotional attachment to the same extent.

It always reminds me of modern western architecture, more than a Leica

As an android phanboy I'm thinking about spending the 700 dollars for an iPhone5 because i'm sick and tired of waiting 2 years to get the next update. Mean while 5 android releases come out while I go from 2.3 to 4.0. Plus you make a good point. The HTC rezound is started to feel like cheap plastic. I don't even want to get into the issues I have with the phone because I had to hack it to get android 4.0 on my phone.

I still look at my iPhone 4 and think it is as beautiful as the first day I bought it.

Most gadgets lose their shine after a few months, but my iPhone 4... another story, and the retina display is still amazing

Anyone else agree?

Elephant in the corner, replaceable battery causes pain, attack the nonissue

I envy you, the shine wore off for me, so I switched for variety. I sometimes wish I could just be content with something that works well and functional and not want more out of a mobile device. It would sure save me some money in the long run!

FWIW I still love my iMac (2009).

Wait people are complaining here that the iPhone is too heavy? What are you a 4 year old? The phone is very well balanced not only proportionally but physically, and it's not too heavy by any means.
The iPhone 4/4s is considered to be one of the best built and designed phones in the history of mobile devices. It's gorgeous. I don't find the same attraction to any android device or mobile phone for that matter like I do with my iPhone.

Disagree... "just works" means different things for different people. In the 2 years I had my iP4, It never doglocked on me, started it's own unsolicited reboot, had any technical problems. Call quality was flawless, no dropped calls, no antennagate issues, photos amazing, video amazing, reliability amazing. No battery issues. There were the few times that I did the forced reboot to keep things fresh with it. Not once did my alarm clock fail to go off in those 2 years.

To me that is what it means by Just Works.

To gently counter that, although I am really enjoying my GS3, may even come to be crazy about it, I started out with battery issues, which required me to troubleshoot, install aux apps to determine the causes and control various settings so I didn't have to flipswitch all over the place. Had to return one phone due to dropped calls (new one is working flawlessly), and had to restore the phone to factory settings once due to learning curve, deleted widgets not knowing they were integrated with the apps.

I have since given my iP4 to my mom who is able to use it as is with very slight learning curve because out of the box it is working without having to customize or set up something like juice defender to swap in and out of wifi etc.

Just Works, means different things to different people.

And as far as eco system goes in an argument, there is currently no software or app system to fully back up your Android phone and all of it's settings UNLESS IT IS ROOTED. So the two times I had to bust the phone down to factory settings, the only things I could retrieve was my contacts which were synced to Samsung cloud or Google. There is no overall integrated software system that allows you to back up all of your apps and settings with Android. Kies sucks and is not even close.

you are programmed to believe it feels cheap. However, if an apple was printed on the back; it would be the greatest "industrial design" with "magical ceramic composits" and the "retina" display.

Not necessarily. The plastic iPhone 3G/3GS felt cheap with poor fit and finish. This was especially obvious when I upgraded from original iPhone and got rid of it for the iPhone 4.

My choices given the screen size and are all about 4 inches. Anything wider, and its a no go. If Apple goes the way of the Android wider phones, than I would be very disappointed. Don't think I will be. Luckily Apple does not listen to so called enthusiasts that want a plastic, uncomfortable wide phone, but caters to the more down to earth customers. :D Once you go beyond the phone function of Calling, GPS, E-mail and Business texting, than it become a toy (Yes, a Toy) for those that play games/facebook stuff. Other offerings abound. I want Apple to be a more mature company. ;)
