Actually I drove up to the nearest BestBuy and saw one for my self. I too was not blown away by the display. Yes it is better than my Ipad2, but not enough to entice me to upgrade. I also played with the demo for about 15 minutes and did not see any indication that it was any faster than the Ipad2.

I guess for a non iPad owner, this will be nice, but I personally would spend $349 and get an Ipad2 Apple refurb. I'd bet that next year, the processor is much faster. The waiting begins again.

I woke up early to grab my new ipad. This is my first one. After powering it up, I have to say that I wasn't blown away by the display. I have 2 iPhone 4S, and I think both have better displays. The new iPad display looks kinda dingy to me. I had to turn the brightness all the way up before it looked decent. Compared to one of my 4S phones, it's much warmer. Are all iPads warmer in color temp then the 4S? I thought that since all screens were samsung this time there would be no variations.

Is this normal? Kinda tough to tell but iPhone is much more blueish at same brightness level.

This is what i get when comparing to my iPhone 4 also. Didn't notice until i put my iPhone at the side of the screen and the iPad does look like it has a yellowish (or warmer) tone to it wheras the iPhone whites are alot whiter.

Could the yellow be a glue issue like the iMac displays ?

I did the same thing except I went to an Apple store and I had the same response as you. I even brought my iPad2 for comparison. The text was sharper but overall not that big a difference. It was also warmer than my iPad but not by much but I do prefer mine.

I'll definitely wait and see what happens with the 4th gen as I also noticed that mine was a bit faster than the new iPad. Kind of disappointed, I thought I was going to come home with a new one.

I thought I was the only one :(.

My iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are on the cool spectrum. This new iPad is warm. Which would be ok but ...

Using this thread on all my devices, the screen on this new iPad has a pinkish, grayish, yellowing coloring, compared to pure white and gray on the other two. I tried to capture it but doesn't show on my iPhone camera.

The entire right side of the screen is yellowish.

Text is crisp and clear and colors are gorgeous. But, am very unhappy about this yellowing!

Didnt say it wasnt clear, it is, just the colors arent popping like I thought. Wondering if people are finding the Ipad has a cooler or warmer temp then their iPhones? I want to know if this is normal or not. If not I'll swap it out, if so I'll just return it and go iPad-less.

Hallucinogenics may help you with the colors popping out issue.

This is a video comparing speeds of the different ipads but when I looked at it -all I could see was the amazing improvement in the screen.

In that picture you posted with the phone and TNiP the phone looked brighter but TNiP was much easier to read and much clearer.

I haven't had much hands on use yet, but the retina display seems really good!

I do see the difference with iPhone 4 & 4s compared to it. It really comes down to how close you are using it to your face.

That is why a 60 inch TV with only 1080p looks good from the couch, you aren't very close to it.

It's a huge step forward, whether it blows us away as much as we expected or not. It might not be quite the words that some have used to describe it, but it's pretty terrific. We don't have lots of native resolution content for it yet. It will only get better as we have more content and more app icons that are sized correctly.

lol at ppl that are telling the OP he is blind. The problem is he is coming from a iphone 4s that already has retina so ofcourse it's not going to blow him away. A lot of you been using a non retina display ipad 2 so jumping to the new ipad will do such a thing even though you guys are going over board with what you are saying.

Possibly, or my thoughts is that it's just a slightly warmer looking display.
Was going to upload photo but my batteries for camera need charging.

I put them both on 100% Brightness in settings to compare and to be honest it then makes the iPhone look like a blue tint and the iPad a slight yellowed tint.
I then went to make a coffee, came back and set the brightness back to around 65% on both (does this really save much battery?) and then picked up my iPad and had a look again and at Mac rumours website.

In all honesty, if I don't really have them side by side, the yellow tint is quickly forgotten about and doesn't really affect the viewing experience at all.

Unless it looks like it's floating in urine beneath the screen then think we just need to accept that it has a warmer tint as opposed to iPhone s cool tint.

However i do believe a simple settings update for warm and cold, so that users can set their preference. Or maybe a slider, so if indeed each display was slightly different, this could be adjusted to negate the effect and also to the users liking. OK maybe one iPad might be +2 and another +4 in whatever setting to achieve the exact same tone, but this then negates any manufacturing differences and stops the comparisons and buyers remorse thinking their unit is defect. Not to hide any faults if they exist, but to help enhance the users experience to the colour tone that suits them.

Have to say, maybe yes

I have to say, I'm a maybe yes on this too. The display IS lovely, but compared to the ipad 2 which was already pretty exceptional, the ipad HD is certainly better, but not otherwordly better.

If I think back to say, SD to HD tv transition, that was just such a total life changing transition as far as the quality experience goes. The ipad 2 is already quite good. Now, I haven't put any of my 18MP images on it yet, but will soon to test that compared to ipad 2.

Yes, the icons are crisper. Yes, text is sharper and crisper. Certainly it CAN play 1080p videos, but honestly noone is going to be able to see a difference between 720p and 1080p on such a screen. I most likely will still download the SD version of itunes movies, just to optimize space on the unit.

Honestly, and this is of course very subjective, I don't really think the "retina display" is all that necessary here. For me it was about the display AND the LTE which I am sure I am going to really enjoy using while travelling and out and about.

The display will probably be the defacto going forward, but with so much power and processor consumption just to drive the display - is it really work it?

I truly believe the reason it is not 'popping' for you yet is because of the yellow tint that is apparent on every iPad or iPhone for the first few days or week of use. You will see over time once the glue dries it will become more like the iPhone 4S. If you took a picture of your 4S the day you bought it and look at it now, I can almost guarantee it would have looked more yellow that first day. It is just part of the manufacturing process that needs a little time to heal itself. I have bought every iphone and every ipad on the day they launch and almost everyone has had this 'problem' that is self healing.

Give it a week or two before wasting time returning it. If is still bad then, I would return it.

Maybe this should be noted in the small print on the paperwork inside, just as an acknowledgement from apple.

The display from that pic certinaly looks yellow, if not too yellow. The whole point here is that he is unsatisfied with the product, go and tell Apple that you aren't satisfied and either get a replacement unit or your money back.

When I first turned on my new IPad I did the same thing as you and put it together with my iPhone 4. The iPhone is definitely more blue. Then I started using the iPad and asked myself, do the images on the screen that are supposed to be white LOOK white? If they do, you are fine, if not then you may have a defect. Mine is def warmer than my iPhone but I think my iPhone's tone is extra cool.

I also looked at other new iPads when I went to Best Buy to look at cases. All of the them looked the same compared to my iPhone. Remember that apple also cranked up the color saturation to help show off the retina display. This probably has an effect on the way it looks as well.

Take your iPad to a store that sells the new iPad and compare it. If yours looks drastically different than return it.

It's nicer. A little bit. I'm just not seeing a huge difference.

I felt the same at first but now when I am sitting with it at home I am overwhelmed by ow I can visit a news site like the guardian and read every page like a news paper without having to pinch or zoom.

Its fabulous.

I find pathetic how some people are bashing the OP because he has a different opinion and wasn't as blown away as some other people. Don't expect everyone to praise and idolize a product just bc it has an Apple behind it.

i'm not really blown away either im hoping its the yellow tint issue of being new. I used it side by side with my ipad 2 and dont get me wrong I can SEE the clarity of text and stuff but its not like bananas as everyone made it out to be. I have to keep telling myself after I sell the ipad 2 for $500 im only into this thing for $300 and I went from 32 to 64 and gained LTE. im getting about 10mbps down and 2mbps up with 3 bars at my house on vzw lte.
