Not impressed with 6s/Plus

What has that got to do with what I said?

I very clearly said the hardware, did I not? *crickets* That's what I thought.
You said it might have to do with money. Possibly they're using that money to fund continued OS development of older hardware.

Anyone else not too terribly impressed with the new iPhone 6s/Plus?

Still an excellent device, but in my opinion I just don't think it's that much of an upgrade from the 6 or the Plus.

I am just as much an Apple lover as the next guy on here with a rMBP, 64GB iPad Air 2, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and iPhone 6 Plus 64GB. I have truly invested in Apple. But the keynote just didn't really do anything for me.

Hoping my opinions will change when I get my hands on one.

Thoughts?

I'm waiting for iPhone 7, even 7S. I don't need multi-touch. I'm confident that next year will the year for 2GB Ram and a design that will wow us all.

That 3d touch is an (iPhone) game changer. It deeply changes the interface of the iPhone that we've had in a very drastic and better way. It may not seem as drastic at first glance, but just imagine how you would feel about going back to a regular iPhone after you've gotten used to 3d touch? I would hate having to revert. I probably wouldn't even go back to an iPhone if I had to lol.

Dude, it's literally long-press with vibrate.

In fact, if it's so deeply integrated into iOS 9, there's no reason every iPhone can't use it. How hard you press my butt...it's just a long tap, and by the looks of it, too long for that second action.

So you think we will see 3d-touch on pre-6s phones?

I love it! The "S" upgrades are never huge upgrades, they just offer you new stuff to keep you from getting bored. Plus it's marketing.

I want the 12mp camera! I take a lot of photos with my iPhone so that is awesome to me. The FaceTime camera is sweet. So yeah, I'm in. I'm going with silver this time around. I have the space gray now, (getting tired of looking at a black phone). I have paid off my 6 plus so I can sell it. I'm on AT&T next. Should be able to sell the plus 128gb for about $680 or so.

So you think apple are just lying about the how hard you press thing and hoping no one notices?

It is clearly different than a long press. They completely redid the screen to include the pressure sensitive panel. You're being obtuse if you think it is just a software gimmick that could be applied to any iPhone.

Out of curiosity do you own an Apple Watch?

I 1000% guarantee you there is a time element involved. If the very first press on the iPhone screen (after it is on) is the exact required pressure to 'activate' the 3D press, it won't come up immediately (perhaps not at all). It will either need to understand a baseline of a regular touch or need a timeout to make sure your not intending a normal press.

1000% guarantee huh, I'll make sure to quote you later...

Also how do you like force touch on your apple watch?

this is about the best we'll get when the phone is updated every year. you can't really make big changes.

Look at how much better the new phones are than the iPhone 5, for example. It takes a few years for really big changes to happen. I for one think the new phones are more than worthy of the upgrade.

The extra zero was a typo, but the emphasis is welcome. ;)

I do not have an Apple Watch, but I have played with the new MacBook. In either case, it is clearly a long press.
That's great that he over exaggerates the press in the video but it doesn't change the fact that my apple watch can tell how much pressure I am putting on the screen. I can force touch in less than half the time it takes him in that video or I can tap in the same amount of time.

I will give you that the macbook version doesn't seem to work nearly as well as the watch, but 3D press is going to be a significant upgrade.

What happens when you long press on an app icon in iOS? It sure doesn't pop up a menu. It enables you to move the app icon around.

The fact that it could pop up a menu means nothing since that's not how it has been programmed in any iOS. 3D Touch enables another layer (like a gesture). It can be used in conjunction with a long press. This is what everyone seems to fail to understand.

I get it, but its not as substantive as you think. 3D touch is tied to a time element, so a better descriptor would be an enhanced long-press. Not some new realm of input.

Still though, innovation is always welcome. The fact that Apple is allowing pop up menus is a step forward.

Safari reloading is terrible on the 6 Plus. And I'm interested in the seeing 2GB of Ram. But am I overly impressed with the 6s Plus...no.

I'm on the fence on rather I get it or not. 3D Touch is coo and all no doubt. But for some reason it left more to be desired. I barely use Force Touch on my Mac..

Then you just saved some money, good for you. As soon as a new model comes out, the older model looks like a piece of junk to me.

I think I will upgrade to 6 from my 5s now. And then will upgrade to 7 next year. Anyone is thinking like this?

Or maybe buy the 6s on upgrade... not sure which one is more worth it.

If you were not frustrated with your 5S yesterday, I'd wait for the 7.

The phone loses more value in the first year than the second one, so upgrading now and in a year will cost you the most.

What are you basing this statement off of? There are clearly capacitive pressure sensors built into the screen tech so what makes you think it can't sense how hard you are pressing? Especially when apple already has force touch on the watch?

If the very first press on the iPhone screen (after it is on) is the exact required pressure to 'activate' the 3D press but tapped as quickly as a regular tap, it won't come up immediately (perhaps not at all). It will either need to understand a baseline of a regular touch (which changes from person to person) or it needs a timeout to make sure your not intending a normal press. How else will it distinguish between an intended 3D touch and how hard you or I normally press the screen...?

When the iPhone 6S is out, you will not be able to quickly but firmly tap the home screen and see a menu pop up.

the tech for 3D touch exists in the screen. that is why it is incompatible with older phones. It's not the time of the press, it's the force.

please watch the keynote like everyone else, you'll actually find out things that you didn't make up.

The same way my apple watch can tell the difference between a force touch and a regular touch. If the very first press on my apple watch was a force touch... it would just be a force touch. Nothing apple talked about mentioned setting a baseline for pressure sensitivity. If you had spent much time with an apple watch you would have a better sense of it.
