People are fondling it for 5 minutes in a controlled area and having a snap opinion.

If you’re and SE or 4.7” iPhone owner you’ll probably be quite happy since you really aren’t losing anything. The X is a 4.7” on steroids.

If you are a 5.5” user, that’s a different story. The UX and ability to display content takes a hit.

As opposed to you, who has not touched it or seen it in person. We shall see.

Does anyone know the width and length of the iPX's safe area of the screen compared to the iP8+'s usable area of the screen?

The notch is what makes the iPhone X recognizable and original. If the status bar was all black, it would just look like all the rest 18:9 phones, like the Galaxies or LG.

Also, they would have to make thicker bottom bezels because Apple likes proportions.

Nobody really likes it because nobody likes a notch on their tvs, ipads, laptops, computer monitors or movie theater screens.
Indeed. We used to see regular posts here about folks being irritated by one teeny-tiny dead pixel on their screens.

The notch seems like lazy design to me. Apple should've pushed themselves harder to conceal the sensors.
Just like whoever designed this stadium seat layout should've tried a little harder. Who wants an obstructed view?

"Without that post how would you know you're at a _____ game? Otherwise it would look like all the other games."

Hahaha. That's like saying "Everyone else already has the perfect design. I don't want to have the same perfect design like everyone else, so I create a flaw to stand out from everyone else." :p

The X is perfect. I love the notch
Agent Mulder, you're fired :p

Here's a simple solution:View attachment 717464

That solution stinks. First off, a lot of people hate the notch because it’s “unapple like” to not have it symmetrical (and therefore “ugly”.) Your solution fails just as bad. The top corners are WAY different to the bottom corners, and isn’t any more symmetrical that the notch visible. Secondly, permanently blacking out the top just hide the notch defeats the whole purpose of the screen design (of reaching to the edge and at the corners being perfectly shaped to match the shape of the iPhone itself.)

Can't apple just do a software update and make the ears of the notch black to blend it and still have status bar info???

I don't want them too and I hope they don't . if you dont like the notch , either embrace it or switch platforms because this is the future design of iOS mobile devices

Browsing news today (and reading some of the newly-vocal posters here) it appears Apple is actively seeding tech writers with the notion that the notch is the new ‘home button’ - an iconic Apple hallmark. It’s staying.

Apple HAS patents to put everything in the notch underneathe the screen. However...technology. You can’t jait whip something up out of thin air. The tech needs to be developed, tested and ready for mass market. That takes time. You can bet that it will eventually be their end game. But for now we have the notch. Which btw is not even remotely close to as bad as people are making it out to be. I personally embrace it

I really really really hope not. How many rectangular shaped screens do you view content on that have some random notch sticking out of the bezel or frame into the content you’re viewing?

It would be a bad decision.

Some facts on the ground

The primary use of apps for the most part is portrait mode . in portrait mode the notch separates the ears which provide the status views and time , below the notch is the app content and that is all rectangular shaped

Another fact , very few people use apps which are not games or media horizontally and very few use it for the web browser , look around and your own world around you stat will tell you the same

Another reality , that video and photos in horizontal mode are shown up to the point before the notch starts as a default and you only see the notch if you zoom in to them

Games which use horizontal mode can move around notch as the delivered view is dynamic colors which can conform to around notch

Fact, everything you’ve listed could’ve been done without having an obtrusive notch. Reality is the “full” screen media viewing experience is worse than smaller screens without a notch.

I literally just played nba2k17 on my 7 plus, you have to play it in horizontal mode like many other console level iOS games, and am glad there is no notch blocking some of my content.

Some facts on the ground...
Yes, but. A few more facts that have been on the ground since 2008:

[Steve] Jobs Made Google Change Their App Logo Because They Didn’t Use The Right Shade of Yellow

Google’s Vic Gundotra in 2008 said:
“Hey Steve – this is Vic”, I said. “I’m sorry I didn’t answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn’t pick up”.

Steve laughed. He said, “Vic, unless the Caller ID said ‘GOD’, you should never pick up during services”.

I laughed nervously. After all, while it was customary for Steve to call during the week upset about something, it was unusual for him to call me on Sunday and ask me to call his home. I wondered what was so important?

“So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I’ve already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow” said Steve. “I’ve been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I’m not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn’t have the right yellow gradient. It’s just wrong and I’m going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?”
