Apple is embracing the notch. Not blacking out the notch.

The "solution" has already been presented in the new Human Interface Guidelines for iOS.

It comes down to whether you like it or not. If you don't like it, the only real way to voice your displeasure to Apple is not purchase iPhone X.

It's not as if Apple is soliciting feedback on notch solutions. They've already come out with their rules.

the majority of the population doesn't care about design that is true.

for me, that's the solution. Without the white going to the edges, the screen is already bigger than before, and the place you place the black color is a place without any function other than being annoyingly white. There's no loss of screen content by making those spaces white in most apps and it's result is more visually pleasing.

[doublepost=1505409481][/doublepost]I hope developers do not embrace the notch and hide it at least in landscape mode. It developers don't embrace the notch.... Apple will have to listen!

Also....a good point is....anyone wouldn't have any problems with the notch if Apple had introduced the Dark Theme people's been asking for years, and OLED was the perfect occasion.

While I prefer the solid black line to the notch, I don't think it's going to bother me that much. Except for watching videos- that seems very distracting.

It's not that simple. Many people don't have the option to switch platforms. They have to stick with the iPhone. And if they need a new phone, their options are iPhone 8 or iPhone X.

So by your logic, either they buy the iPhone X and give Apple the impression they like the design, or they buy the iPhone 8 and tell Apple they like having the same design four years in a row. Neither option is great, but settling for one doesn't mean they approve of either.

This looks perfect to me. Except that line at the bottom looks terrible regardless, but it looks less terrible on the concept.

Except if you have seen iPhone X in person.. not talking notch here, the width doesn't work like those photos. They are thinner than a plus model and because of this you lose more on screen real estate when you should have gained it. This is a selling tactic and not something the normal user will pick up on. However, as a developer I've already noticed on several of my applications that will not properly line up on the new phone, requiring me to do some serious updating. Hassle? yeah for me.. for the end user.. they won't notice like I said because I have to make the changes... if the end user had to just live with older apps (pre x64) than you would see some crazy serious issues. Not to mention some x64 applications using specific API's will have issues if not corrected by Apple. I see those changes coming in 11.1.

Videos default to playing so the notch does not cover any of the video. You have to double tap on the video to enlarge it and have the notch then cover a portion of it.

Ultimately I think the dropped the ball on the notch. I understand wanting to embrace it. They obviously could not engineer their way around it. At that point you can consider that the notch gives the face of the phone a unique character which makes it instantly definable. In the way the click wheel did for the iPod and the home button for the iPhone.

So I get embracing the notch.

However I think the perfect solution would be to have had the notch visible on the lock screen. Allowing them to fully embrace it marketing material and photos where you show wallpapers going around the notch.

Then when you unlock the phone you get the black bar solution. To me that would have been the best solution.

iPhone X is all about the notch. It reminds you have facial recognition and not fingerprint recognition.

It's silly to hide the notch when it's Apple's signature. Without the notch, it's just a rounded rectangle like an LG or Samsung.

No, the fact that it doesn't have a fingerprint reader is a reminder that it doesn't have a fingerprint reader.

Lol i also bought s8 plus midnight black and since then loving it. Way too cooler than iphone X. I have used android phone time and time again but apple is my first choice. After using & looking s8 plus i can say iphone x is not edge to edge display. Really disappointed design by apple, hopefully they will correct it soon.

Last Android I used was the S6. It's come a long way in the last couple years no doubt. Not too happy with the keyboard, but the gestures are great and the UI is really fluid even if from Samsung. I've gotten used to the fingerprint reader placement quicker than I expected and I'm loving widgets again lol.

Buy an 8. Has the latest tech inside with no notch.

Latest tech "inside" being the key problem.

I'm curious if the fanboys go into the Apple Watch threads where people make mockups and discuss new faces they would want, and say things like:

"I like the current faces. They don't bother me. They are what they are because Apple made them that way. If you don't like it, don't buy it."

And repeat ad nauseum, and try to rebut every face suggestion with the same nonsense.

The notch is not the end of the world even though it seems like that to you. Others it will not bother but one thing for sure is you do not know what Apple will or will not do.

I'm in agreement with smorrissey....

This is a fail. Removing choice (Touch ID), as an option for people and having a notch that you can't un-see is a fail. Is it a fail enough that people won't buy? Nope. Its my opinion, and people shouldn't buy base on someone else's opinion. Enjoy!

Now I will make a prediction that I would put money on......Apples next iteration of this iPhone will have Touch ID as a choice, and they will find a way for the notch with the sensors to blend in with the background or it will be gone entirely.
I will make a note of this post to check back in a year. I'm taking all bets. :)

Here's a simple solution:View attachment 717464

It's crazy how much better it looks like that. And with OLED they could easily do it. It's hard to fathom what they were thinking really. Though even that doesn't solve the problem of what happens in landscape mode.

I really like the X otherwise and will be buying one but this generation I think in terms of design the Samsung S8 is far more elegant. Of course the overall fit and finish and quality will likely be better from Apple but I really believe they went a bit wrong with the notch, I think they have got hung up on the idea of having a screen that reaches right into every corner.

I agree with you totally overall fit, finish, quality and material will be better then s8 but design wise s8 plus is a winner IMO. Saw Note 8 but didn't like it, way too big but i get it its for different kind of use. Apple could have made X little bigger like 5.9 or 6 would be fantastic. S8 plus is 6.2 and still looks ok not too big. Width is less.

The problem is that they want something different, seemingly anything to keep their interest, without actually knowing what they want.
Why couldn't they just have all Apps in landscape stop before the notch & go all the way to the bottom of the phone.

Didn't really need to ask - it's the wow-factor & being able to market a "5.8 inch" screen...

No chance. Quote me on this in a year.
