I'm in agreement with smorrissey....

This is a fail. Removing choice (Touch ID), as an option for people and having a notch that you can't un-see is a fail. Is it a fail enough that people won't buy? Nope. Its my opinion, and people shouldn't buy base on someone else's opinion. Enjoy!

Now I will make a prediction that I would put money on......Apples next iteration of this iPhone will have Touch ID as a choice, and they will find a way for the notch with the sensors to blend in with the background or it will be gone entirely.
I will make a note of this post to check back in a year. I'm taking all bets. :)

No chance. Quote me on this in a year.

And one steps up to the plate.........We we'll see sir.....:)

Why couldn't they just have all Apps in landscape stop before the notch & go all the way to the bottom of the phone.

Didn't really need to ask - it's the wow-factor & being able to market a "5.8 inch" screen...

I think there's a bit of false marketing in the screen size considering not all 5.8" is usable.

People who have no experience with the Samsung S8 are in for a surprise when they start using the iPhone X and realize that iPhone X display is long and narrow, and perhaps less practical than the 5.5" iPhone 8+.

It's an aspect ratio thing. People will notice it once they start using it.

I've been trying to make future X owners aware of this since the announcement. But they don't want to listen. Let them buy their poorly designed phones

Yeah they're marketing the 5.8" screen, but it's a technicality.

I was hoping the wider screen of the X compared took the tall & narrow Galaxy S8 meant full screen content would be closer to original aspect ratio. Shows how little I knew about the resolution.

Video on the S8 can at least make use of top to bottom of the screen in landscape mode, whereas the wider screen of the X means black bars will be on top, bottom, left & right....let down.

The hands-on videos show that in order to watch something at true aspect ratio, black bars will appear. That's a given. But you're making a leap saying that this downgrades the phone to 4.7" status. I see no evidence for that.

You don't understand what Apple has done to achieve the 5.8" display of the iPhone X and why video is really 4.7".

All they did was make the 4.7" display taller. That's it.

So what does that mean? Meaning in landscape content can't go any taller than it does on the 4.7" regular iPhone 8. It's exactly the same height.

By default, if it can't be any taller, than it must be the same length to maintain a native 16:9 aspect ratio, which is 4.7".

It's just basic math.
[doublepost=1505462564][/doublepost]I pulled this from the Apple devs site to provide a visual aid of why native video 16:9 is only 4.7 on the iPhone X.

I'm not knocking the iPhone X, just trying to help people on the fence understand the product.

In Apple's own words

"Screen Size

In portrait orientation, the width of the display on iPhone X matches the width of the 4.7" displays of iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8. The display on iPhone X, however, is 145pt taller than a 4.7" display, resulting in roughly 20% additional vertical space for content."

I will make a note, too LOL!

I stand corrected. Thank you for explaining that.

It doesn't put me off but it does add to this announcement being slightly flat. I don't get the impression it's quite the ultimate phone they want to be making.

That said, the screen is unquestionably better, if not bigger. I'm upgrading from a 7 so I won't know the difference but I can see how this would give Plus owners pause for thought.

I think someone coming from a 7 to iPhone X will be happy.

Someone coming from a 7+ like myself, the user experience is going to take a hit.

The OLED display will obviously be better, prettier, but it wont be as usable or practical as the 5.5" iPhone Plus series screens.

Right after the announcement I said the iPhone 8+ is the best phone Apple will offer in 2017.

Will be interesting to see what happens when current 5.5" iPhone Plus owners switch to the iPhone X and realize their larger 5.8" display is actually less usable and practical than what they had.

Yep, and if recent history is accurate going forward. We are stuck with the X design for at least 2-3 years if you want oled

As long as Apple keeps updating their Touch ID models, I will continue to buy them over the iPhone X line of phones.

And if Apple does choose to sell a more appealing 6.4" iPhone X, I'm not paying $1300+ for it.

So I'm perfectly fine with sitting out the X design completely.

I would have been perfectly happy with an OLED 5.5" iPhone 8+, bezels and all.

That's probably because you're used to the Plus, though. The X is a very attractive option to everyone else.

If I had a iPhone 4.7" or SE, the iPhone X would be a lot more appealing.

The price is still prohibitive though.

for me, that's the solution. Without the white going to the edges, the screen is already bigger than before, and the place you place the black color is a place without any function other than being annoyingly white. There's no loss of screen content by making those spaces white in most apps and it's result is more visually pleasing.

As I said, Developers will NOT be doing that because apple has specifically told them NOT to design it like that.

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

Don't mask or call special attention to key display features. Don't attempt to hide the device's rounded corners, sensor housing, or indicator for accessing the Home screen by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Don't use visual adornments like brackets, bezels, shapes, or instructional text to call special attention to these areas either.

Apple literally pointblank says you can't put black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. The notch is here to stay.

I actually hate the notch from purely an aesthetic point of view. But after watching a hands-on video, I feel like it somewhat makes sense due to the removal of the home button. Without the home button you need a way to quickly switch apps and/or get back to your home screen. To do this, you have to interact with the bottom of the screen by swiping. At this point, where do you move the control center to? Another use for the notch is to make it slightly more intuitive to the end-user because on the left of the notch, it brings down your notifications, on the right it brings you to control center. Now for watching videos/content in landscape mode, the notch is just annoying.

You do realize (I hope) that instead of the notch, Apple COULD have distinguished between a left side swipe down and a right side swipe down and done two different actions?

The notch really doesn't add functionality in the truest sense.

It really didn't need to be there. And depending on what camp you're in, Apple either %*@^# this detail up or they were pressed for time and still choose to do this regardless.

How much hands on time do you have with the X? Because nobody that has actually tried it agrees with you.

Apple can't possibly please everybody...if the phone doesn't sell (and it most certainly will), they'll probably change the design.

People are fondling it for 5 minutes in a controlled area and having a snap opinion.

If you’re and SE or 4.7” iPhone owner you’ll probably be quite happy since you really aren’t losing anything. The X is a 4.7” on steroids.

If you are a 5.5” user, that’s a different story. The UX and ability to display content takes a hit.
