Apple leads and the rest copy (I mean "follow"). Lots of egg on the faces of the MacRumor naysayers brigade today. Oddly, the naysayers apparently like the taste of eggs on their faces. Still going at it even after yesterday.

Copy implies Apple did it first. Perhaps you should look up what the Essential Phone looks like.

somehow i can't really understand why everyone goes full bananas over this tiny amount of screen real estate...
I think it's moreso because of the compromises it took to do it. Personally, I'd rather have the entire top section "blanked out" so that the top of the usable screen area is uniform across the top, and have my status bar icons back. Having to constantly pull down on that tiny, hard-to-reach corner to see if I'm on Wi-Fi Calling or have VPN on is annoying.

It's so many versions of this and that phone, that it makes me wonder if they are confused themselves.
I feel this way about Apple these days. Not accounting for any different carrier versions, I can buy 64 different iPhones (accounting for models, storage, and colors) from Apple TODAY.

People still buy LG phones anymore?

Let's be honest...there's two players in this game: Apple and Samsung. Just like its only iOS and Android.

I mean, Google, is trying with their new phones, but you rarely see any in the wild.

HTC, Motorola and LG are pretty much irrelevant now a days.

You forgot Huawei. Has been number 3 for a while (Worldwide sales) and their tech is advancing fast.
They also got the best camera at the moment.

I'd need two hands to count the number of Pixel and Pixel 2s I've seen. I do agree about the majority of your post though. Though I do see some Motorolas from time to time, and the only time I'd see an HTC was if I was holding it.

Strategy seems to be working pretty well. See the earnings yesterday?

It's smart to have many models and price points for the best consumer product of all time. For Apple, it's only 4-5 models with different storage sizes and colors. They are going to sell old models because it helps manage their supply chain and is a win for the consumer as component costs come down and synergies are achieved on the assembly side.

Ultimately, it isn't that confusing at all.

Why is everyone copying Apple's huge ass notch? I get why Apple's notch is wide: it has FaceID tech. But these copycats don't... so why don't they just copy Essential's notch?

You hit the nail on the head. The only two players in the game with a notch that disappears when you're using the device are the X and the PH-1, and I'd wager a large portion of the reason why, is because their screens go to the very edge.

Having a notch just to have a notch is silly.

Wasn't commenting on success of the strategy at all. I was responding to someone who said, "It's so many versions of this and that phone, that it makes me wonder if they are confused themselves." If I clicked through correctly, I can purchase 36 different phones from Motorola (again, accounting for model, storage, color). That's FAR fewer models than Apple is selling.

And of course it isn't confusing to someone on an Apple related forum.

I don't hate the notch, but I do think it looks distracting. I think the phone would look better if Apple had blocked off the "ears" for system-level use only, made them display a black background, and then reserved them for signal strength, time, battery percentage, etc. Allowing the background and apps to display in that area feels like a cheap way to accentuate the edge-to-edge OLED display with no benefit to consumers. It is for marketing, not for function.

It isn't confusing to customers, evidently...which is why I mentioned the quarter. Customers seem to understand which iPhone they want to buy, because they sold 52.2M in 90 days AFTER the Christmas quarter when they sold over 77M.

Why do you even question the strategy is the point? It's clearly working. Who cares what Motorola is doing. Apple sells a good mix of all their phones, no doubt. They are product EXPERTS.

Why did Apple copy Essential's small notch?
You really think Apple cares what Essential does, let alone plans to copy anything they do/did? I bet essential sold 50,000 phones total.

I am talking strictly in terms of smartphones. Didn’t mention TVs or other monitors since they don’t have much bearing on their mobile division.
Not every company can be 1st. Doesn't mean they should give up manufacturing phones if they can't topple Apple/Samsung. If LG's success with TV's/refrigerators/washing machines allows them to burn money attempting to create good phones, I'm all for it. With that said, the LG V10 and V20 were my favorite phones I've owned. They had niche features, a second tiny screen for notifications and quick access toggles/apps and the highest quality audio hardware for a phone. They abandoned the second screen for the V30, possibly because of their partnership to manufacture the Pixel 2 XL (they use similar hardware). I hope it comes back for the V40.

More I see iPhone X I like it very much though notch is a set back. But it's way too expensive for one year lifecycle.
The one-year lifecycle is no big deal. The secret (shhh!) is to keep the phone for two years. It's a little life hack I've used for almost a decade.

I actually kept my iPhone 6 plus for three years, and then I gave it to my sister, who had the battery replaced.

Apple doesn't want people to know they can keep their phone longer than a year, but it's actually super easy. When Apple announces new phones this fall, smile and nod, and then slowly back away before they can reach into your pocket and take your old phone away.

Uh, folks.

You DO remember that LG is supposed to be supplying iPhone displays next year, right?

-

LG hasn't intended their smartphones to make a lot of profit for years. Instead, they mostly make and sell them to show off their technology.

I think this is mostly practice for supplying Apple later on.

If nothing else, this ThinGGG is a preview of what the iPhone X Plus could look like, minus the chin. I am more than ready to go X Plus, bring it on.

They don’t create good phones though. From the LG G2X to the LG G4 to the V10 to the G6 to the V30, all have had some sort of problems like boot loops, P-OLED issues, poor software, etc. LG’s reputation is so bad that they had to make 2 year warranties with the G6. The Nexus 5X had bootloop issues and LG got sued. People succeeded again LG in court or arbitration.

LG would’ve been better off starting from scratch, pricing around the same level as the OnePlus 5T, support their phones long-term, and win more customers with pure Android software.

You don’t have to give 5 years of support (Apple) or have the best specs (Samsung) to earn more customers.
