somehow i can't really understand why everyone goes full bananas over this tiny amount of screen real estate...
Everyone doesn’t :)

In the real world, few care. For some on MacRumors, it’s just something to focus their Apple-hate on.

It’s worth remembering that a few dozen or even a few hundred posters (paid or not) don’t represent reality in any way. Most of them don’t own the Apple product they’re complaining about, and have no intention of purchasing it in the future.

A self-reinforcing echo chamber isn’t a good way to gauge what actual customers think, or care about.

Why did Apple copy Essential's small notch?

Apple didn’t copy the small notch, they don’t have a small notch.

Just remember the very first phone announced and released with a notch was Andy Ruben's Essential PH-1.

And yet more notches are going to look like the one on the iPhone and not the one on the Essential.

be interesting what the rumoured pixel 3 with a notch will be lol

Thanks for the permission to believe that Apple sells too many different versions of the iPhone – an opinion I am far from alone in believing. I was really counting on your approval to make it through my day.

I fully realize my relevance to what Apple does is zero, but I made no comment on how well the strategy was working. I'm not sure how else to tell you that.

I'll continue my conversation with the person I responded to if he or she would like, but I'm done with you.
You're far from alone in being wrong too. The numbers are in. It works, end of story.

Refer to my BMW example...

But it still has a chin!?!? The only reason the notch is acceptable is because the screen is the same distance to the edge all around the device. If you’re going to have a chin then might as well have have a forehead as well.

You know the ability to turn the notch off wasn't rocket science I think everyone thought of that in like the first 3 seconds after seeing it but what it is, is Apple being Apple and we know whats best for you and ANY customization is OUT. That said Apple does allow changing icons and I think the ONLY app that you can is MLB.

The notch is now wanted and a status symbol.

Remember women got offended if you told them they had a big butt years ago? Now because of Kim K and company, big butts are wanted and in style.

The notch bothered me until I saw one in real life then I stopped being bothered by it.

Pessimist: my iPhone X display has a notch cut out of it

Optimist: my iPhone X display has two ears added on for the battery and clock indictors...

Realist: my £200 Huawei has neither ears nor a notch but makes calls and does email, texts, maps, web and takes tolerable snapshots and video clips. If I want more processing power I'll take a Macbook. If I want better photos I'll take a DSLR. If I wanted to shoot a professional pop video I'd hire a professional who didn't propose to shoot it on a phone. If I want to visualise myself as a dancing pile of poo I'll take drugs...

Or, I could pay 5x as much for something that is maybe 2x better at those things but is still no substitute for using the proper tool for the job. Meanwhile, the one bit of electronic equipment that I need to take wherever I go and that I'm most likely to drop, lose or get stolen is relatively cheap and disposable.

(* seriously - those guys in the various ads shooting pro videos on a phone - betcha the person shooting them wasn't using a phone...).

Can someone please explain to me why most? of the Android phones which have the notch, which I'm ok with, as it's ADDED space for extra info, also have a narrow chin at the bottom?

I can't believe anyone thinks it's a great look, so I'm assuming it's to do with the electronics/connections for the screen?

I'd like to know what the problem is with getting the screen to go right down to the bottom, given there is no physical home button, and has not been on many phones for many years, why is this chin still there?

Thanks

These companies are competing to make the notch smaller and smaller until there is no notch. Notch is a solution in search of a problem.

Indeed, once they figure out how to put sensors in-between / behind the display, the need for a notch will disappear, and from then on, it'll be considered antiquated design. Funny how that works :)

Sometimes that's true, but not this time.

For example, my teen daughter's group of iPhone loving friends have so far avoided the X because of its notch... and lack of a fingerprint sensor.

Being “first” to release something has never been important to Apple. They’d rather get it right.

"Getting it right" would've meant not having a notch at all. See first comment above :)

Some/all (?) Android phones with a notch... including this LG... also still have a headphone jack at the bottom. Maybe that's why.

You say realist, but I don’t think you know what that means.

The notch on phones makes sense to me, cameras, sensors, decent earpiece etc. The space around it is ideal for status icons and aesthetically, matching the bezel colour seems sensible rather than extending the wallpaper.
The chin at the bottom is probably just to make it all symmetrical more than anything.

At least Apple did the notch right... the curves, the consistency with the bottom etc. These other companies are too run by engineers and not designers.

Right?

Apple can design up the wazoo, but this is not their best effort.
