At least the notch is smaller in the Android offering.

Their notch is smaller, because they have less sensors in the area. Few seem able to replicate the speed, accuracy, and security of Apple's True Depth sensor system (yet).

You forgot Huawei. Has been number 3 for a while (Worldwide sales) and their tech is advancing fast.
They also got the best camera at the moment.

They may have the best camera hardware, and their AI integration is very, very nice, but I believe the Pixel 2 is still considered the best camera with regard to actually taking pictures.

Not only did they copy the notch design but they’re marketing this with a wallpaper idea that seems awfully similar to that of the iPhone X. The design at the bottom is reminiscent of the iPhone 6 albeit with USB-C.

I don’t doubt that the G7 is a quality product but I don’t see them gaining much traction here considering the Note 9 is coming out soon. Had they been earlier to the party perhaps.

Don't like any notch. Rather have the look of the Note, S series from the galaxy line.

People still buy LG phones anymore?

Let's be honest...there's two players in this game: Apple and Samsung. Just like its only iOS and Android.

I mean, Google, is trying with their new phones, but you rarely see any in the wild.

HTC, Motorola and LG are pretty much irrelevant now a days.

LG has relevance outside phones, and like Sony has other divisions and uses the smartphone as a mobile showcase.

LG:
Home Appliances (thus like Samsung, using AI as a sell and tie in - trying the ecosystem play)
LCD, LED, and soon OLED
sensors

Sony:
Gaming
Movies/Music media - they failed for years since SonyEricsson days and only focused on Japan/UK. IF they really pushed in their heyday ... there would be no Spotify today.
Camera & CMOS sensors!!! The entire smartphone industry uses these!
- have a look at their GoPro competitor it's amazing, yet unsure of pricing competitiveness.

I don’t know about that. I’ve personally seen a few people jump on that Moto Mod phone

Moto Mod has been dead ... sure it lingers on but that's what it is lingering, soon to fade like their best promise the Moto Maxx (2016) with shatterproof glass which actually was NOT a gimmick. Just the phone was far too pricey.

I've switched to LG. The G4 and the G5 I've owned, and they've been solid phones with no issues. My G4's charging port is a bit sketchy after a couple of years of use (an issue my iPhone 5 also had), but seeing as I purchased it for less than half the price of an iPhone I'm not complaining. The new USB-C charging ports seem more reliable anyway than the old micro-USB, so I don't anticipate it being a problem in the future.

The price for LG's latest phone is kinda expensive, however unlike iPhones their value drops quickly after the next generation comes out. I was waiting for the G7 to come out so I can buy a G6 for cheap.

Only thing I don't like the look of with the G6 is the headphone jack at the top of the phone.

Why are other phone manufacturers coping the notch. Its look awful on all implementations of it including the X. At least Apple did it to house a useful face Id system, others are putting it there just to copy the ugly design. People give Samsung **** but they one of the few companies that still make good looking phones that don't copy every little thing on the iPhone, and they have the courage to keep the headphone jack.

Because it’s the most utilitarian design that gives the most screen.

I'm referring to smartphones. Sorry, if that wasn't completely obvious.

I find it funny that the one physical negative most agree on is the notch on our iPhone X. Yet, the competition still uses it in their latest offerings?? hahaha! Apple continues to lead the charge? At least the notch is smaller in the Android offering. Im sure Apple already has plans to make it smaller for my next iPhone X :]

Huawei P20 and P20 pro also have an ugly notch.

Or that you couldn't afford it.
I suspect that's why there's so much sour grapes towards what is undoubtedly the best smart phone ever made. By a mile...
Your comment says a lot about you. So, I thought I would simply say hello and tell you I hope everything is going ok.

That's your loss.
It is indeed my "loss" but I made my decision based on personal preference. This year it looks like I will have to deal with it since I doubt any will come without the notch. I was waiting for the plus model since that is what I have been using the last 3 years and based on rumors we might see one. I was excited for the OLED display but as we got closer to launch I just felt the 8 Plus was the better option for me, for now.

I love the notch!!!
Not to sound smart, would you buy a TV with a notch? I would guess I use my phone for video on the go as much as I use it for anything else. You can reduce the video size to hide it but then you have a smaller display area than the plus model. I could live with it but decided to pass for now. I'm happy you're fine with it and suspect tons of others are as well. I'm not here to talk you out of it. :)

At least Apple did the notch right... the curves, the consistency with the bottom etc. These other companies are too run by engineers and not designers.
Lol, did the notch right? That' the funniest thing I've read all week... No designer worth his salt would touch a notch with a barge pole....

Apple’s notch looks nothing like Essential’s. And all these Asian brands are copying Apple’s version.

You’re right. It’s much bigger and takes up more space. Using your logic, the notch on the LG is nothing like the notch on the X because LG’s notch is smaller.

Still does not change the fact it looks like poo.

It's poor design. I hear more screen? That's blocked by a notch? What's the point? It looks bad and once they knock it off all the other companies will notice how bad of a design choice it is as well. At least the galaxy line is avoiding it my keeping a clean look.

When this topic came up and searched google to see if anyone had made a mockup of a tv with notch. No one would take such poor design from a TV.

I want a larger, vertical protruding Notch that aesthetically matches my vertical camera bump:
The incredible Ive Pimple that only Apple can do...with enough distinctiveness to be patented

not really, it's barely noticeable once you use it. All companies care about is more screen.
"barely noticeable" is in the eye of the beholder and seems to be selective. Even, proportional bezels are a complete distraction that must be eliminated, but taking a bite (or notch) out of a rectangular screen isn't distracting?

"Barely noticeable once you use it" isn't quite the ringing endorsement one would expect to see to describe a premium flagship phone. :)

The companies don't care about "more screen". They could easily have kept the screen size the same, keep the top bezel and not have a notch.

The truth is, the notch (and rounded corners) is nothing more innovative than, "being different for the sake of being different in order to stir up attention and sales". Period. Apple isn't alone in this. They're not even the leader in it. Samsung and others have been dabbling with non-flat, non-rectangular screens as a way to differentiate themselves.

I can understand someone buying a notched smartphone because it is different, something out of the ordinary boring rectangular slab. I can. It is when people try to justify the need and superiority of the notch that leaves me puzzled.
