I used to have a case on my 6S for a while, took it off one day and admired how thin and nice in the hand the phone actually was. Haven't used a case on it since. I feel the same about screen protectors, never have used one of those. I'd always feel like it would detract from the screen quality if I put one on. I think one of the reasons people do this is for resale value. That and not wanting to risk the possibility of dropping and smashing their expensive phone which I can understand. But on the flip side, babying it like that feels like you can't truly enjoy it and appreciate the design which you payed so much for.

Exactly. One of my friends recently suggested I started buying older iPhone models, second hand, to save money - he just didn't get that I was happy to spend a lot for a better experience. I can't afford to do that with everything, but this is one area I choose to, because I don't just use a phone as a means to an end.

If I couldn't buy the iPhone I want box-fresh, I'd rather just go without.

For me, the rounded, slippery metal backs in the thin frame of modern iPhones would prevent me from truly enjoying one without a case. Partially because of the drop risk, but also because it is simply a bit stressful (not sure about the right wording here, non-native speaker) to keep a firm grip and use it naturally.

The design is less important, as I usually look at it from the front side (a screen is a screen, no matter if a case is on or not) and don't want/need to show off anyway.

Let's put it in a different perspective: The modern, slim design allows to add a case to it without mutating it into some ugly behemoth. :)

The signal strength is still in dots? I thought we moved to the traditional bars in iOS 11. So most likely the lock screen is not gonna look like that.

The cutout on the top will be blended with the display like the image below, not like on the render. The case looks fugly.
The idea has been floated several times that the notch will be visible on the lock screen but not in most other situations. The HomePod firmware revealed that iPhone 8 glyph with the notch, meaning there must be situations where that notch is visible, otherwise that glyph couldn't be used to identify the iPhone 8. Being only on the lock screen, it won't bother people most of the time, yet be still shown regularly enough to serve as a distinguishing mark.

That case is probably the ugliest damn thing I've seen in a while. Why put that phone in that stupid case?
Those cases are for max protection. If your phone is a work tool, you're clumsy, or just want to maximize resale value cases from companies like UAG, OtterBox, etc. are the thing to have. I fit none of the categories I listed. I just like heavy duty cases. To each his own.

I'm really beginning to think that Apple are going to express and embrace the notch, although we all hope they'll simply use it with a black OLED background so it vanishes.

I'm thinking that the notch is the only thing that's going to visually differentiate the iPhone from anything else when all phones are turning into this full screen, no button affair. The little circle home button is pretty much iconic compared to any other phone. The notch fulfills the same branding duty.

The case has nothing to do with whether the display will look like this photo or have a black status bar. It seems obvious this guy just created a computer render based on previous rumors and that icon from the HomePod software leak.

Instead of an expensive case, I will purchase insurance.

I’m already caseless on my 7+ and don’t regret it - looks better than with any case.

I’d rather have a case. I remember the 6 and 6s when they came out feeling like a wet bar of soap and dropping demo phones constantly at the Apple store.

Yes! That would be the most beautiful split symbol interpretation of the function bar/notch/cut-out, (as suggested in recent reports), in my opinion. I hope it proves to be the final design. Go Jony Ive, go! :)

Why is everyone subscribing to this terrible use of space with the UI at the top? They're always not considering space for Carrier, Location, alarm, Bluetooth icons etc.

Especially for a 5.8 inch sized handset, the icons are way over sized for the real width that would really occupy, as are the other mic/camera features.

I picked up an iPhone 5C the other day and they feel sooo nice in the hand. I just wish they'd make one that size, but with the narrow bezels of the new iPhone. Would have basically the same screen size as an iPhone 6, but in a much nicer to hold shell.
Make it plastic too! that was the only phone i had that i felt comfortable going caseless. I go caseless with my SE now, but its too slippery.

I was holding an iPhone 4S today and I can definitely agree to that, it's so nice to have a phone that just fits in your hand. If they could give me a 4.7" screen in that phone i'd be sold.

Wouldn't it be nice to get an upgraded SE that followed the 8 rumors. Obviously it would not come this year, but if next year they updated the SE with an all screen front it would be amazing. The SE sales show there is still strong demand for a smaller phone.
