Yeah look at the price, aka overpriced. This is not a flagship hardware, it's mid-range. Snapdragon 778 phones are around $300. For $400 and $500, you should expect Snapdragon 865/870 at least. And high 120Hz AMOLED screens are quite common nowadays. Even the $300 Samsung Galaxy A52s had it.
Mid range SoCs are perfectly fine for most people, these phones should have a great battery because of that chip. Speaking of 120Hz screens, where's iPhone 13's, that costs $800, 120Hz screen? 🤔

Nothing special?

120Hz, HDR10+, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits
4,500mAh battery
USB-C
50 Megapixel and 16 Megapixel Selfie Camera

All for 399 bucks. Yeah ... nothing special at all LOL my 1,299 EUR iPhone does not do any of it.

Real World: This looks great with some nice things no one has previously thought of
Macrumors: THIS SUCKS
If you make purchases based on battery size, camera sensor size, USB port and pixel density without knowing how those specs will affect your experience, you were never an Apple customer to begin with.

Good to see a little shake-up in the smartphone world.

Instead of being a straight-forward boring rectangle chassis focused on cramming specs to create value, the Phone 1 is purely a tech-geek lifestyle product and derives its value from being aesthetically unique. Not all value has to be tangible.

Whether it succeeds or not is yet to be seen, but I'm happy someone is taking a different approach to a product category that has more or less homogenized by now.
No serious adult would buy such a smartphone. Obviously its target audience are teens. And if you are teen, you are way cooler if you have a 1000$ iPhone instead of a this 400$ another android phone with leds on the back.

Not to mention that the leds on the back have very weird shapes and do not make any sense. Definitely, nothing to see here.

To break into the phone space and differentiate yourself from every other black slab you need a gimmick or something special. Nothing seems to have found it. Granted for somebody looking for top end specs, or if your an iOS die hard, this won't be on their radar.

But for somebody who wants something different and doesn't want to spend a lot of money I think this will be popular.

You guys can be so myopic and condescending sometimes. Its hilarious how so many people here hate on Jony Ive's excessive minimalism and then grab their pitchforks and torches whenever someone does something more daring with their own design.

It is hilarious that you think the target market for this product is "obviously" teens. There is an entire world out there with people who have all kinds of tastes. Grow up.

Also, in case you didn't it mentioned in my post, I specifically said that there is no guarantee that this idea will succeed commercially:

"Whether it succeeds or not is yet to be seen, but I'm happy someone is taking a different approach to a product category that has more or less homogenized by now."

I am just happy someone is taking a fresh approach to building a smartphone. And I say this as someone who has been using iPhones all his life.

Cute, a stranger telling me what a „real“ Apple customer is. That does that even mean 😅🙈 and btw, I have owned like 10 iPods, every other iPhone since the iPhone 3G, 4 Apple Watch generations, 5 iPad generations and 4 MBP. And yes, I even owned the iPod socks! In multiple colors. Nice try

Can’t you just buy a slightly used pixel 6 Pro for a similar price? Seems to be a better value given the 5 years of updates google guarantees.

They're smart to skip US availability. Promotion is costly in the States, and Apple and Samsung totally dominate here. Nothing would wipe out its bank account for no benefit.

Their commitment is posted and it's decent. Let's see if they deliver.

3 years of Android updates
4 years of security patches every 2 months

(Might be tons of hidden spyware sending data via a proxy to a dictator state please buy now look how cheap so much high specs look we registered UK company so we must be safe)

This looks like it violates every single one of Apple’s original Human Interface Guidelines.

If it was given to me as a gift, I would put it in the sink, empty a can of lighter fluid on it and send it to a well deserved firery death.

How much LSD do you have to take before the external world finds it difficult to communicate with you? Every single phone call I’ve ever made in my entire life has used, wait for it……numbers not glyphs.

No I don’t like it, won’t buy it and will happily tell the 2 people I know not to buy it.

^%ck if I were rich enough I would buy this company and put it in the ET landfill site and I’m pretty sure that humanity would thank me.

Wouldn’t touch android with a barge pole
Hah; I originally bought an Android phone b/c there is chess software that interfaces with my e-boards; said software is not available on IOS. After having this Samsung monstrosity for 1 yr, can’t stand it and am getting an iPhone. Still needed the chess software so I picked up a Chromebook.

Waiting until iPhone 14’s are released.

Does look good doesn't it? $399 $475 for all that isn't just good value it's a stand out feature list. Should Apple be worried? no of course not. But it does provide a great phone at an incredible price point for Android users. I think it looks neat too.

It's novel enough that I'd probably buy one on an impulse, but I'm not going to go out of my way and source one in Europe and have it shipped to me. Next time I'm traveling and if I still remember it, I may check it out. This is the kind of thing you want to encourage phone manufacturers to try even if this particular set of features doesn't appeal to everyone.

Most of the people criticize the phone here until King Apple does something similar and it's INNOVATION!!

While there may well be a huge number of parallel universes, in none of them Apple would ever release a phone with a random light show on its back.

jeez. sounds like you need a snickers and a warm hug.

relax. it's just a phone 🤣

It looks great. Too bad it runs Android. I wouldn’t switch back. I prefer iOS, love the way I can copy & paste & airdrop seamlessly with my computer, and rely on software like Garageband

I've always appreciated translucent casings. Still love the Nintendo Atomic Purple!

Since you have such a long history as an Apple user, you should understand that Apple has never had the largest battery, largest pixel density, biggest camera sensor, etc. Why did you stick with Apple so long? Why question Apple specs now? Because of this new competitor?
