A phone with a 6.7-inch FHD 120Hz OLED 2000 nits peak brightness for $199.

Apple charge $200 just to increase the RAM by 8GB on Macs.

Yes, but if you're a Mac user, spending $200 on RAM seems more valuable than buying an Android phone.

120hz for $199 lol!
Meanwhile my wife has the 256GB 14 Plus which was $899!

And it comes with a screwdriver!

I'm pretty sure if you take the iPhone away from your wife and give this to her instead, she'll feel you screwed her over. Sometimes being able to screw screws with a screwdriver is not enough to make a wife happy.

“Modular” back in my days meant something else… even old Motorola phones had better options.
Using word “modular” after Project Ara, Phoneblocks or fix ability of Fairphone is a big no.

Not easily replaceable battery, no NFC? This phone is a joke.

Only idea of having this spinner to fix the camera bump was something new. Everything else is a joke.

Tell me, for an average person, what difference does it make if it runs iOS or Android?
I tell you what an average user is like: I once received a call about an app not working and I asked if they're using an iPhone or an Android device. Their reply was: "I don't know" and then I asked if she could tell me if it runs iOS or Android and she said she'll go and ask from her colleague.
She didn't even know what brand the phone was.

A few days ago, I asked a user what phone are they using and they said: "Where do I see this?" and it turned out she was using an iPhone. Average people don't care what phone they use, especially in Europe. And frankly, I don't really either anymore. A phone is a phone. As long as Duo mobile and Microsoft Authenticator works I'm pretty much fine. The same goes for the computers.
Anecdotally, the teachers in my school were recently tasked with recording their students giving a presentation. The kicker - we were using this microphone which uses an app that recorded to a specific app of the developer's, and as of last year, their app stopped being available on android. So the only people who could use the microphone were the ones with iPhones, or who had already downloaded the app last year prior. I ended up digging out my old 8+ to loan to one colleague.

But to answer your question seriously, yes, for most people, it may not matter, which is why android has like 80% market share and iOS 20%. But the thing most people don't seem to understand or acknowledge is that 20% of the world's population does still work out to a very impressive number of iPhones sold (what more when Apple is the only supplier of iPhones). It is possible for Apple to continue serving a small market of consumers who value their unique offerings enough to pay the premium for their products (and remain highly profitable), compared to the other 80% of android smartphone OEMs who probably aren't even making any margins off their sales.

So yeah, bottom line - you don't have to care, and it makes zero difference either way. You voted with your wallet, as have I, and the outcomes speak for themselves.

Calling a device mature is an easy way of saying stagnation.
what you dont think we've reached Peak Phone?

There is so little that is new these days.
And for many people, waiting three years between phones is now the norm.
Then you get enough justification to upgrade and the battery is probably down on capacity...
I will upgrade this year. But that product refresh would happen regardless of what they sell.
Could I get by with my 13 ProMax for another year? Probably. Its a want not need thing. :)

The most exciting part of upgrades for years has been cameras.
The low light, the zoom, the pixel count. I have decent digital cameras I rarely use because I have my phone with me all the time and the quality of the image (especially Panorama stitching) is much better. I can edit in camera and email or AirDrop. It's more convenient all round.

Apart from that, design and software tweaks are nice but hardly like the early days of upgrades.

Will AI be the next generational change? Not heard anyone excited from the last Samsung AI phone release.
A Siri that's smarter would be a bonus. In meaningful productive ways. Context.

I guess we will see when it comes out how useful it is...

Did the article say it was $25 for a screw on kickstand?
And another $25 for a lanyard?

And then people complain about Apple gounging and bending customers over... LOL

I have to say that, if nothing else, I am digging that orange color.
So for $25 you can buy a case in almost any colour and snap it on your iPhone without screwing involved...

All those screws and lack of dust and water control should allow a greater range of modular updates.
Battery at least. Camera maybe. Then it would actually be legit modular. :)

This is no more modular than Samsung Notes in the past where you swapped out the back for a new back or folio cover.
And you could change the battery while you did it or add in an SD card.

Can I throw AMOLED display in a trash and put normal LCD or TFT on it? If no, it ain’t modular but just another Nothing’s “nothing”

having just purchased an OLED television I look forward to all of my screens being OLED

to be honest I don't look at my phone enough to really care, but my desktop monitor could certainly use the upgrade

Don't know what it is, but I really like the design language of this budget phone. Reminds me of the Teenage Engineering gear. Have to agree though, no NFC is a bummer. Otherwise, decent specs.
I’m also really digging the industrial, utilitarian inspired design.

Yes.

You forgot they offering a 120Hz screen on a $200 dollar phone and 8GB RAM. Yet your $1000 iPhone 15 doesn't have these.

These accessaries are optional, and it is one way for the company to make money. It is a lot better than $1000 phone doesn’t come with chargers and headphone in the name of "protecting the environment".

No it isn't. I am typing this on a 2012 MacBook Pro, I brought 16GB RAM kits for less than $200.

$200 on a RAM upgrade is pretty stupid. This is why I haven't brought a single Mac since then.

I did change my wife's iPhone 8P to Google Pixel 7A during sale. She has no complains about it whatsoever.

I do have a feeling that most of MacRumor users haven't used Android phones nor PCs or have only used cheap ones. Pixel is awesome. There are many awesome Android phones out there.

Obviously, it's an Apple forum overall.

But while I understand not having used Androids in a long time I don't understand why you have to bash them especially when you don't use them.

As an Apple fan you should want Androids to be really good, because competition is what makes your next iPhone even better

I think you could just pickup a random Chinese brand phone on Amazon for a similar price... and probably get NFC to boot

Nothing seems to have a good reputation for shipping comparatively low-bloat firmware and decent software maintenance schedules. Yes, it's not comparable to iOS, but good for the price I think. I also would not trust a random brand bought from Amazon.

What's the difference between this and $200 Samsung phone though??

I don't know much about the whole Android ecosystem to be frank. I would guess Samsung is also a safe bet, if you like the customizations they make to skin their phones. Nothing's firmware seems to be quite "vanilla", which would for example appeal to me personally.

Yeah, but wouldn't this be a better deal?
Also, I've looked at Oppo's phones. ColorOS is awesome. It's like iOS 18 but with even more customisation but it's Chinese. If you have Oppo's tablet you can even mirror the phone's screen etc and their phones are around $150 as well.

I have nothing against the Chinese, but you don't know if your data gets sent to the Chinese government and even the cheap Oppo phones last two days on battery.
Their high end phones have 16GB of RAM as well and Android isn't as bad as people here say. I've never had any issues with Android or PCs.
