From early hands-on, the display on this CMF doesn't have a variable refresh rate. It's 120hz or 60hz.

There's more to VRR than just an off the shelf panel to support it. One needs the GPU to support it, as well as software to control it.

Fixed 120 is fantastic and certainly better than the "fixed" 60hz Apple jams into so many devices they charge astronomical prices for (computers & phones)

It is what it is.

I would spend whatever the amount turns out to be here there and everywhere for these on a babied preowned iPhone with 85% + battery cap remaining. Would probably have a better phone lasting just as long both physically and for updates.

Wouldn`t worry about glued batteries - if what they provide is decent give or take. Lack of NFC would be a showstopper for many I guess, nothing I need. Prefer not to be crippled if i loose my phone or if it gets stolen, thus I will keep physical cards for payments anyway. Besides, I really don`t feel the need to share financial stuff (or anything really) with Apple or any other provider (i.e Klarna) of additional layers between my cash and shops++. The benefits of creditcards is limited to protection against bankrupcies and traveltrouble as far as I`m concerned.

The drawbacks to me would be Android, probable delays in security updates, IP rating and lack of magical beam charging.

One could probably use it for calls and messaging. Or?

If it was the new iPhone SE with an Apple logo on it every naysayer would hail this phone. With those specs for only € 199,- I won’t be upset if upgrades are a month late. Apple Intelligence hasn’t been released and will come to market in spring 2025. Wonder what the competition comes with by then. Apple Intelligence is in beta by spring 2025 🥵

A phone with a 6.7-inch FHD 120Hz OLED 2000 nits peak brightness for $199.

Apple charge $200 just to increase the RAM by 8GB on Macs.
There's a scene in Schindler's List, where Schindler asks Goeth the Nazi commandant "what are the Jews worth to you?" and Goeth says "no my friend, the question is what are they worth to YOU?"

The RAM is worth like $5 to Apple but $200 to you

(Oh wow I didn't just compare Tim Cook to a Nazi. Godwin's law strikes again.)

Unbelievable value even with the probable compromises.

What amazes me (and many others it seems) is that you get 120Hz & 8Gb for that price.

Apple is taking its customers for fools.

Honestly looking forward to seeing what the Pixel 9 series will offer this year ahead of the Apple offerings. So far , 16 Pro rumours and Apple Intelligence hasn’t wowed me.

I honestly can barely tell between 60hz and 120hz so I dont care, plus I think people whine about it way too much but I do care that apple can charge 1k CAD for a device with only a 60hz screen.

60hz or 8gb ram on a 1000 CAD device should be cRiminal.
Some can, some can't. I hate using a 60Hz display now after having 120Hz or more on every device I've used for years, it just feels broken now.

Phone is a good design, but it runs Android. Enjoy the constant notifications and sneaky ways the system tries to get you to compromise your data and security. Even things you set up will just get reversed automatically eventually.

People are fawning over this when they see 120Hz but it’s either full time 120Hz or 60Hz it’s not variable. Also the resolution is kinda bad for a screen that size as it’s only 1080p which is something I had in my Galaxy S5 like 10 years ago. Full time 120Hz will also drain the battery down to empty in like two hours or less. It’s horrible for the battery.

The phone is $200 there are going to major compromises all over this device but you have to know that going in.

With that said is it somewhat interesting they allow you to change the outer shell, I remember doing that with my old Nokia phones back in 2003.

It has a 50MPx camera and while I could say pixels aren’t everything maybe it’ll be decent with a Sony sensor.

All in all it might make a fun second phone to have around but I wouldn’t want this for a primary.

That orange 👌
iPhone Pro colors are pretty lame, as someone who doesn’t use a case. I like the natural titanium band I have but the pale grey glass is weak.

Not sure why many are saying the lack of NFC is a a let down. I sometimes feel like I’m the only one in my city that taps with their iPhone. It seems the vast majority still prefer to tap with their chip cards.

LOL - Just went through that entire thought process over my morning coffee. "No NFC might be a hinderance!" straight on through to, "Oh yeah, I tap my cards anyway, and every time I use my mobile phone it's more cumbersome, not less."

I tap with my watch all the time as it's way more convenient But I still feel that it was a silly thing to leave out, considering that everywhere you go these days there is a tap to pay option.... Especially in the UK where they are launching first. How much cost could an NFC chip have added? Unless they really really wanted to stay under the $200 USD mark for marketing optics.

Could also be a limitation of the MediaTek Dimensity 7300. Apparently the SOC is an off the shelf component.

As a designer, especially, I love the look of this phone. I have no use for it but it makes me happy just to know it's out there.

No, it's not. I keep looking and they all go around $400-500
That's one of the cheapest ones I found which is ~$450. The link that you posted me doesn't ship here. Nothing Phone is still $200. Makes it better purchase if you ask me + has 5G.
Free wouldn't even be better unless it runs iOS

Can I throw AMOLED display in a trash and put normal LCD or TFT on it? If no, it ain’t modular but just another Nothing’s “nothing”

Tell me, for an average person, what difference does it make if it runs iOS or Android?
I tell you what an average user is like: I once received a call about an app not working and I asked if they're using an iPhone or an Android device. Their reply was: "I don't know" and then I asked if she could tell me if it runs iOS or Android and she said she'll go and ask from her colleague.
She didn't even know what brand the phone was.

A few days ago, I asked a user what phone are they using and they said: "Where do I see this?" and it turned out she was using an iPhone. Average people don't care what phone they use, especially in Europe. And frankly, I don't really either anymore. A phone is a phone. As long as Duo mobile and Microsoft Authenticator works I'm pretty much fine. The same goes for the computers.

You didn’t see the color reproduction irl yet. It could be worse than 50$ Chinese iPhone knockoffs.

If it looks like LSD trip then it is worthless for power users like photographers, video makers and designers who value precision. Considering they don’t tell how much sRGB or P3 coverage it has, screen is probably trash

I like the looks, but to me this screams disposable phone. Maybe that’s the point for someone wanting a basic low-cost smartphone, but I would bet a bunch of these will get dumped in short order and contribute to the e-waste problem. The thing I’ve loved about iPhones is that I’m always able to pass them down, effectively spreading the high initial cost out over 6-8 years of usable life.
