Android and iOS are two completely different ecosystems and markets. One would think more direct competitors would be Samsung and Google.
Your exactly right, but you get headlines by stating that your going to compete with Apple. Getting iOS customers to change ecosystem will take a lot more than a single feature.

The phone market is in desperate need of more competition so I welcome a new brand. Hopefully they are able to produce a quality product at a competitive price and can gain some market share. Frankly, phone have gotten stale and I‘ll be glad to see any new take on this now staid market.

Nothing in way that phone moves me
won't attract me like no other device
than  cuz
Something in the way  woos me
Why would want to leave  now
You know I believe and how

You're asking me, will if this phone will grow?
I don't know, I don't know
will it stick around on a charging stand?
I don't know, I don't know

/sorry George H

It's not the hardware. The Nothing Phone could be better in performance, battery life, camera and screen quality, but I don't care. My iPhone has worked as advertised for more than 10 years. If I buy an iPhone, I know what I get and I know it's sufficient to my needs and will be for the coming future.

Maps is now just as good as the Google maps.
That's not true at all. Google Maps has way better coverage, has a large collections of POIs with sufficient reviews all over the world, has support for offline maps when you're travelling abroad, etc. Apple Maps is fine as long as you don't travel a lot, but Google Maps is lightyears ahead.

People often forget that Apple services are lacking in quality outside the US. Apple News isn't even available in most countries. Siri is useless in pretty much any country outside the US, etc.

The funny part is the bit about taking on Apple or is this just a click-bait article? How is that even POSSIBLE, I ask? The iPhone runs on iOS and all other phones are on Android. Now it would have been better to say the "Nothing Phone" was going to take on the Samsung Galaxy and Pixel phones. You can't take on a phone when you have NO access to their platform.
It’s likely hyperbole to grab headlines.

People and MR get this wrong. Nothing isn't competing with iPhone as it has no iOS.
It's an android competitor, nothing else.

Personally I like the look of it.
Nothing in comparison with my new iPhone Mini though 😁

"There might be a time where Apple is like 80% of the overall market and that just does not leave enough space for Android-based manufacturers to keep playing," Pei added.

This market ratio could have well been similar elsewhere in the world, had Apple chosen to adjust their pricing strategy accordingly.

A simple example - iPhone 14 Pro starts at 1329€ = $1407 in France. The same iPhone sells for $999 in the US. If we add 20% tax to it, we end up with $1198 = 1131€. It is a 198€ difference. Not cool.

It's probably a compromise they have to make in order for carriers to agree to stock their phones. Not everyone has the bargaining power that Apple does, and even they cave in to carriers every now and then.
Facts.

NOTHING CAN DEFEAT APPLE. APPLE HAS NOTHING TO FEAR.

Wait, what did I just say?

Because mid-range android phones (from established companies too) were always an option for iOS users to switch to but I don't think many were convinced to do so. 'Nothing' doesn't bring much to the table to reasonably hope to change that. Most people will stay with the platform they know, even if they have to live with a boring looking phone.
So true, especially with my mother in law. She’s not a tech person at ALL, but she wont give up her Galaxy for anything. I tell her how much better it would be with Apple for simplicity of OS, and especially FaceTime, but she just is stuck and “happy with her little phone.”

At least now FaceTime can be invited to non-iOS users, but those damn green bubbles and SMS… so annoying to have to deal with the green bubbles (can’t send reactions properly, can’t use data, can’t send photos and video full-res)

You definitely don’t want Apple News. It’s a virus.

Putting carrier bloatware into the phone doesnt seem like the best selling point to me
This exactly! Standing up to the carriers and giving users a consistent and clean user experience like pixel phones is the way to go if you actually want to gain traction with users. If the carriers won't let you in without that just bypass the carriers and sell direct retail.

I think this one is actually Apple’s doing. The extra charge for a device not sold pre-subscribed to an account discourages unauthorized resellers from buying up large quantities of new phones at launch and then reselling them because the extra $30 would cut into their profit margins.

There are plenty of other ways Apple could discourage unauthorized resellers from buying up large quantities without raising the price $30 for everyone who wants an unlocked iPhone.

I'm sure they understand that the problem has never been about hardware. Otherwise, developing a virtual projection touch technology might be a good selling point.

Call me crazy but a phone running Android is competing first against other Android phones. It has to win that battle first.

I get they’re attempting to create hype, but a clone is a clone, is a clone and nothing more.

I’m getting tired of Tim Apple and the politics he allows to define Apple. I‘ve thought about leaving the iOS plantation, and would like somewhere to go, but there is no alternative other than the farm Apple shares a property line with.

Reasonable argument.

Though, the Pros would start at $1029 if it was Apple’s doing to discourage scalpers.

It's funny that Nothing has been designated the design-centric Android phone that could challenge Apple because it tried to make a design statement by including pointless lighting effects on the back.

I'm not even sure Samsung or Xiaomi are feeling threatened by Nothing is some small capacity in the Android world, let alone Apple.
