I'm not familiar with this company but, seriously, Nothing?! When they first started their company and were bouncing off ideas on what to name it, this is what they came up with?
It's their "edgy" marketing approach to just about everything so far, going for the statement rather than the product itself - they do have two pairs of earbuds and a phone, but the quiproquo around their name is already long in the tooth.

If they weren't backed by the iPod inventor, Reddit's CEO and Twitch's co-founder, we would have never heard of them.

To be fair Carl, or his real name Pei Yu, founded OnePlus. That used to be great for Android when they first came out. But roll forward and he sold out, left and is just replaying 12 year old tricks like it is something new and still relevant...

Yep, another one-trick poney unfortunately.

The only people I see buying this are iPhone users that will look at the lights and be like "Oh, that's cool", and then after about a week, they will regret buying it and try to switch back to iPhone.

I’ll be launching my ‘A Lil More Than Nothing Phone’ at the beginning of the year.

It’s basically a flip phone with an LED strip wrapped around it. Must be plugged in at all times.

Android device makers need a truly compelling standout set of features if they’re going to attempt to break into the market. A translucent case and a few flashing lights aren’t going to cut it.

Pei’s promise of a comprehensive open eco system might’ve done the trick but 9 months down the line, as expected, those promises have been completely empty.
The market is too mature and set for there to be a massive change. I'm an Android user and own Pixel phones. A game changer for me is Google's call screener, magic eraser and unblur. Apple doesn't have any of that and yet the Pixel phone is a niche product and will probably stay that way.

People need to stop worrying about what others are using and just use what works best for them. That's why I strictly use Pixel phones.

No you can't. You can delete the icon from the homescreen but it's still installed on the phone.
For some of those you're now clumping the API layer and the app into the same bucket. You can remove the messages app, you can't remove the API it interfaces with because third party messaging etc may still have to interact with the messaging APIs. That's not bloatware, it's part of the provided standard API that needs to stay there to not break compatibility.

The hardware might be nice, and they might give it a slick skin or whatever on the GUI side, but it still seems like it's just another Android phone. I don't see why it's getting more hype than other typical new-hw Android phones?

My guess is that Nothing paid Macrumors to promote this. It's nothing to do with Apple, and there is a microscopically small chance that this gets even 1% marketshare.

Depending on who you ask that's still bloat as it's wasting storage for an app the user may never use if they use Whatsapp instead. It's why the definition of bloatware has become so blurred that it's become a meme within the Linux community.

The hardware is a midrange Snapdragon SoC, a 1080p OLED screen, some flashing lights, and a stripped-down Android OS. It doesn't really compete with the Samsung flagships, much less the iPhone lineup.

How do you compete with the iPhone when your main selling points are a custom rom and some visual novelties?
Custom ROM is the best thing about Android. It's a pure joy to run a bloat free ROM with firewall and whole phone ad blocking. No ads from games or web browsers. It gets me all 90's nostalgic when we had ad free Internet.

It would really help if this company had a phone that had a really interesting feature set beyond "the back lights up." 😅

I'm not sure who's going to give up the iPhone for this.

All these people bashing this company -- what are you on about?

Toyota is the highest selling car manufacturer in the world. Should Honda, Nissan, Hyundai just give up and stop making cars?

Apple sells a crap ton of phones (the minority in the grand scheme of things, by a LOT; but I digress). So now, should Nothing just give up? Should Samsung? You're being ridiculous.

Nothing plans to launch nothing.

Sounds great 😉

Don’t think people are bashing the company. But their name gives way to a lot of humor.
If they wasn't prepared for that, ah well, no harm done to nothing.

Funny how all fanboys come with their negative comments just because the article says “take on Apple’s iPhone”.
