It's funny that Nothing has been designated the design-centric Android phone that could challenge Apple because it tried to make a design statement by including pointless lighting effects on the back.

I'm not even sure Samsung or Xiaomi are feeling threatened by Nothing is some small capacity in the Android world, let alone Apple.
Yeah, it reminds me of the neon-lighted house phones from the early 90’s.

Like they have any chance, they have nothing to offer but another Android phone. I don't think Apple has anything to worry about. This will be Nothing.

You got a new iPhone?

Nothing

So you didn't get a new phone?

No, I got a Nothing phone

.................... 😮‍💨

That’s one reason I like iPhone. No bloatware
Except the Apple TV app, the Stock app, the Podcasts app, the "privacy features" always on that only work on third parties but not on Apple themselves, the Game Center, the Messages app, Shazam, the Feedback Assistant that is always installed but not visible unless you're on a beta branch of iOS, and of course the Maps app

Is the bloat anywhere bad as on Android, no. But to say iPhone doesn't have bloatware is a gross understatement and a lack of tech knowledge. Find My is a great example as prior to an update months ago you couldn't even uninstall it and it was always on.

Every commercial OS has some kind of bloatware. The only OS that will be bloatware free is Linux distros, primarily Arch based ones.

They'll shutter or pivot away from handsets within a year or so once the market proves near-zero demand/interest.

Android device makers need a truly compelling standout set of features if they’re going to attempt to break into the market. A translucent case and a few flashing lights aren’t going to cut it.

Pei’s promise of a comprehensive open eco system might’ve done the trick but 9 months down the line, as expected, those promises have been completely empty.

Depends on what you consider bloatware. Maps is something I would not use, so it is bloatware. So, are many of the first-party Apple apps.
One person’s “bloatware” is another’s crucial feature. I use Maps every single day. You can also delete any app you don’t care to use.

"The reason why we didn't launch in the US is because you need a lot of additional technical support, to support all the carriers and their unique customizations that they need to make on top of Android,"

And that right there is why I won't use Android. Those carriers do not "need" their "unique customizations". That's just boot logos and adware. They simply need to certify that it works with their technology and that's it. But the network operators do not see it that way. They "need" that adware on there or otherwise why sell Android phones.

This story is like all of the startups that say that they will “reinvent public transit” and end reinventing a bus every single time.

So the thing that makes the Nothing phone most unique is the lighting stuff that will largely happen in a handbag, pocket, or facing away from you while under your hand.

And, after acknowledging a host of challenges, including Apple’s US market dominance, sw integration, and presently devalued foreign currencies, his goal is to be profitable in just over a year.

GLWT.

All for healthy competition for Apple. In fact, can we say there's enough real competition in the smartphone and tablet market? Does Apple not tend to err on the side of stagnation when they don't have a fire lit directly under their ass? That being said, it's not easy for me to take the Nothing brand seriously. The concept isn't hard to grasp, sure. Plus, I'm all for transparency returning to modern product design (and companies in general COUGH). But the name "Nothing" and the nature of it's implementation of said transparency.. It just doesn't command brand quality. It's boring. It's...nothing. That's the point, but I'm playing the role of Stupid Consumer here. Me me want shiny. Gib Shiny. 99% of value is perceived value, and if there's one thing Apple's been not terrible at, it's been giving their premium devices a premium feel, even ones at the mid-range/low-end price point. I'm sure Nothing's a lovely phone... (as lovely as an Android phone can be), and phone prices are downright garish so cheap handsets are a welcome treat, but I'm not inclined to drop my ill-gotten wages on a phone called "Nothing" that looks like some cheap Etsy replacement back case for a fake iPhone 11 just so I can see the pretty internals.

They just don't get it do they ?

It's not just the hardware , it's the whole big picture
Yup, that's about right. It's a really nice phone in the hand. Personally, much nicer than any Samsung I've held. But as soon as I turned it on, admittedly having only ever owned an iPhone (ok, ok, and a Treo 650 back in the day!) it's the Android problem front and centre. It really just isn't my cup of Earl Grey.

And whilst I'm an Airpods chap, nothing's ear sticks (recently reviewed here) are really rather good for the money.

Competition is good for everyone.

Sure is, but I'm not sure that's what this is. How many iPhone users are there who want to move away, but don't like any of the *many* great options in the Android space? How does *this* phone fit that market? Or, how does this differentiate enough from other Android devices with their own robust(ish) ecosystems (e.g. Samsung, Google). They might sell thousands to enthusiasts or the techno-curious, but that's it. Maybe Elon will buy them to jumpstart his possible foray into the phone market. Nothing's future is 1) fold or, 2) sell or, 3) pivot to a slow fold then sell.

I'm not familiar with this company but, seriously, Nothing?! When they first started their company and were bouncing off ideas on what to name it, this is what they came up with?
