I’m after x2 of them!
Wowzers!

I already know, if I am able to snag a 5090 FE, I’ll need to power limit it at ~88%* — even then power requirements could be iffy. I have dual (2.25-slot ProArt) 4080s right now with a 1200w platinum PSU. I’ve ground my decision down to replacing one of the 4080s with a 5090 FE, essentially providing triple 4080 performance — again, assuming decent availability.

* Based on testing with the RTX 4080s and the math, any impact should be small.

Anyway...

I got the 3090 and 4090 on launch day at rrp price so hoping for third time lucky 👌
Good luck. :)

I have x2 PCs each with a 4090 in now, not dual cards in one machine but the thought has crossed my mind 😀

Does your PSU have 12VHPWR connectors? That is a lot of PCIE 8pin connectors, if not.

It does. 😊 However, “Max. combined power 12VHPWR (W) 800"
My previous build’s PSU, an EVGA Supernova, was prior to ATX 3.0. So, I had an anaconda-sized bundle of (I think) five 6+2 pin PCI-E cables coiled “in the [PSU] basement.” Okay, eight would probably fall within anaconda-sized. 😁 That rig was running a 3080 FE and 3080 Ti — after initially built with a 3090 FTW3.

Leaked reviews of the 5080 aren't looking too good right now. Wonder how that will affect sales tomorrow.

The 5090 is definitely primarily ML, 3D render, and other productivity focused. The only gamers that (should reasonably) want it are players that want to future proof RT performance. Otherwise, it’s typically just bragging rights.

I’m tempted because the RTX 5090 is basically the raw performance of two RTX 4080s. However, if I can’t grab an FE model at MSRP then I’ll skip it without gripe.
Some of us do game at 4K 120+fps. Even the mighty 5090 can't do that at max RT settings on CP2077

The lines around my local micro center is absolutely insane. It's about 2 blocks down. Sadly, only the 5080 seems to have decent stock. The 5080=4080Ti if that.

Queues for a generational improvement of this range, jeez o_O

I am *definitely* skipping any 50 series. At this rate I might even skip 60. If AI slop is the only major "improvement" at all it's absolutely not worth it.

I’m not sure what you’re driving at here… But…

• I said “primarily” and “typically” (i.e., there are exception cases)
• I stated RT would be a gaming-centric reason because:
— As you note, it’s far from its peak
— The 5090 vs. 4090 RT uplift is significant
—— Technically, the 5090 has (up to) ~66% greater RT performance
—— JTC results show CP2077PL performance at ~42% higher
—— GN excluded the results:

We've had repeat issues with getting the 50 Series cards to run Cyberpunk without some sort of game level issue occurring. […] We can’t state for certain that it is a fault of the 50 Series cards and not some other game update especially because Cyberpunk has had so many problems over the years. [...] And because we know Jay had a similar issue, we're just going to move on.
In which I’ll add… I won’t dub CP2077 a tech demo, however, game implemented RT is seemingly still at a pre-adolescent stage.

That’s somewhat insane. I say somewhat because, no matter what Nvidia’s intended level of artificial product demand perception is, there’s plenty of data to assume supply will indeed be scarce for at least a few weeks.

Look at the current (and recent) 40 series pricing. Available RTX 4090s are being priced well above $2,000. Also, on a quick search, it appears I could potentially recoup entirely what I paid for one of my 4080s, a pre-owned from B&H.

Scan u.k. 50Series launch day today including 3xs pre builds, hopefully.
After latest 5080 review, seems 4080 build can still be considered if 50Series are gone fast.

I think buying my x2 4090's back on launch day have been a great investment.
I got them at £1699 each but even today on the 5090 launch day, I see the 4090 being listed at a major UK retailer for over £2200.
*If* I get lucky and bag at least one 5090 today, I'm pretty confident I'll lose very little on my 4090 purchase price when I sell them used - and that's pretty rare on a piece of tech that's now 2 and half years old!

This is the alleged stock at Microcenters across the US.
I am probably going to try for either a 5080FE or the Pre-water blocked 5080 from Gigabyte. If I get the air cooled unit I'll build a new PC, if I get the water cooled one I will just keep what I have. This will be a decent step up from my 6900XT.

Well… There went that idea. I thought I was quick. Got in line for a 5090 FE within seconds, as far as I’m aware. Of course, after the wait, “Sorry, this item has sold out.”

Decided to try for a 5080 FE afterwards. Same thing, got in line but no luck anyway.

Yeah you should see prices for the 5090FE on StockX...

The nvidia subreddit is annoyed with best buy.

Was gonna get a 5080 FE - or so I hoped.

Makes me want to wait for the Mac Studio M4 Ultra or MBP m5, but I hope we don't get crazy tariffs aimed at Taiwan.
  • Do I buy a custom built PC at a reasonable premium since I can't get stock (running windows, which I hate?)
  • Should I roll the dice and hope Tim Cook's $2 million bribe donation keeps new tariffs from raising Apple prices by 2x?
Feels like pandemic times again.

5080 is a regression since some GPU workloads are slower than previous 4080 Super. 5090 is also meh without node shrink. Hopefully, a follow-up 5090/5090ti refresh with 2nm node appear towards end of 2025 when 2nm TSMC, Samsung and maybe Intel go online with ~30% reduction in power at ISO performance so ~400W TGP and ~280W 70% power limited. Perhaps 9070XT in the meantime if decent performance+price or go low power with AMD "Strix Halo" AI MAX+ 395 MiniPC.

I don't think it is a regression per se. Some workloads don't work right in the new Blackwell architecture. Nvidia has said apps that use the tensor cores have to be updated since those that changed the most. From what I can tell the SM's are mostly the same as before.

I don't think they are going to do a refresh on a new node. Especially since Rubin is slated to go on sale at the end of the year.

I think Blackwell is their test run for dual die GPU's (like how AMD tried MCM for the 7000 series). All the datacenter cards are dual GB100's where most of the performance increase comes from there being two dies on chip (at least that is how I read the numbers, maybe I am wrong).

Totally self serving... Don't buy a 5080FE get Apple hardware!!

Well, no 5090 for me except I got a pre order in... but even that could be months away until I get it :(
Now I have a choice of waiting for the 5090 or the M4 Studio Ultra if Apple can also pull there finger out and actually launch it anytime soon, although I got burnt pretty hard trying to sell my M1 Studio which wasn't quick or easy and i lost a ton of that despite me thinking Apple products hold there value.
