My local system obviously went down, they are doing upgrades but because I already had a web application he couldn't cancel it but he has reserved mine ( because I was one of the first in the que ) and when the system is sorted and he can cancel it I will get the call later today or tomorrow.

A bit of a c*ck up but nothing like this has ever happened so although I think they should have been better prepared and have a better system in place it's a first for the mobile phone industry.

I just got back with my new toy, was waiting in London from 6. Their system crashed half way through my activation so they wrote everything down. Now I have an iPhone that can do anything except... phone. :p

As I walked out I saw the other customers (thy where doing 5 a time) having all their information written down.

(I was second in line)

what is /was London like?

Notting Hill Gate O2 store got through 4 customers in 1.5 hours! I was the 4th person in the queue (got there 5:45am, by 7am there were about 30).

In the end they did everything manually - I got out at 9:30am (late for work!). I got a 16GB Black, that I wanted.

The breakdown for the Notting Hill Gate O2 store in London:

Total 80 ish iPhones
- about 20 16GB Black
- about 60 8GB Black
- no whites

I turns out they did "have enough" then, although maybe not everyone who wanted a 16GB would have got one (the rep went through and at least the first 10 people in the queue all went for the 16GB version, as expected. Stupid Apple!).

I did get a free diet coke though, and they were very nice about it.

I was in Oxford Street, which has about 4 Carphone Warehouse and 3 o2 stores within 5 minute brisk walk of each other.

The o2 store had plenty of people waiting, probably 30 or so, and the Carphone Warehouse across the road had a similar number. Lots of people taking photographs and handing out freebies, kinda fun actually.

I overheard lots of people ask the "o2 Angles" that where waiting outside delving out free muffins and water how many iPhones they had in stock, to which they always replied "we dont know exact numbers but enough for the queue". Basically they had no idea.

I was glad with how the queue worked out, I was getting worried it would turn in a rabble of people outside the door but it was very orderly. Glad I only had to wait 2 hours otherwise I might have needed a wee.

Im really not holding my breath on actually being able to make a call on this until sometime next week. Its an iPod touch with GPS as it currently stands.

ordered yesterday midday from CPW online, called them this morning to confirm this morning delivery to be told it's coming tomorrow for extra £10 charge!

cancelled my order, drove into plymouth and queued for over an hour to be told, sold out!

so, looks like someone doesn't want me to have one.

So what did you end up with and did you walk out of the store with your new iPhone or like the rest of us have to go back in later to collect it, once the systems are back up and running?

wish we had free muffins and coffee.. we had an o2 employee eat his mcdonalds breakfast in front of us!!!!!

I'm still sitting at o2 store. What a joke!!!!!
not leaving without the phone

I am sat at a terminal at the apple store in the Trafford centre. The system is jammed and no phones have left any of the stores yet.
They do have White ones though

O2 TC managed to process people by resorting to paper - they wrote everyones details down and gave them the phones. I think the systems came back up later as my iphone registered OK when I got to work.

Edit: No, my tariff is still listed as Simplicity!

Exactly what happened in Oxford Street.

I am still in the Lakeside Apple store. I was sixth in line so was seen straight away so far nearly 2 hours later I am still here trying to get through the credit check. So far only one person has got his phone. Still if it takes all day at least I have got my 16 gb white iPhone.

Queued up at O2 Widnes, 8.15am, 7th in the queue.

O2 rep came out, and announced that he had stock of 3 16GB models, and 10 8GB models, and that was it.

By this time there were ~18 people in the queue.

I've secured a 8GB black, for pickup sometime today, due to 'system crashes'.

Not the best result, but at least I have one.

the Q at o2 In Eastbourne is pretty big. Walked to CPW number 1 and they had a little Q but announced as they opened the doors that they had 2 in stock!!!!

Walked to CPW number 2 was 5th in the Q there waited about an hour whilst the system crashed THEN they descided was a great time to tell all of us q'ing that there was only 4 8GB's in stock. I left due to the fact I want a 16GB

Just Walked past all of the shops again and the Q's havent changed in O2 and the same customers are still waiting in CPW

Arrived at the back of the O2 store queue near Liverpool Street in London at 8am this morning, but was told they had plenty of stock of the 8Gb but not so many 16Gb, which wasn't a problem as I was after the 8Gb. I was told to expect a wait of around 2 hours. Not bad considering. Nothing happened until about 8:15 apart from free coffee. I then heard about 8:30 that the system had crashed. They had served 2 people in 1 hour and the queue hardly moved, except for people getting sick of waiting and leaving. Waited until 9:15, queue still hadn't moved, so I gave up. Thanks O2!

3rd in queue at Swansea, 1st out the door - but with a 16gb Iphone and no connection yet. Fingers crossed that the connection will be on the system today. Just tried to activate on itunes but can get past the .mac screens - although phone now powers up but shows no signal

They reverted to manual pretty much straight away - luckily Id had credit check done the other week - although it didnt matter today - all of you with poor credit might be able to slip through the net today on paper process.

10/10 to Swansea store though, polite, free coffee and plenty of staff - think they just about had enough for the queue - but very limited 16gig (all gone) and about 25 8gb, nothing in white though

at the o2 store in queensway, London. Got in the store to use the display model. Am 18th in queue. I will be getting the last 16gb in stock.

Arrived in Glasgow for 5am today. 4th in the queue at o2 Buchanan St and part of the first batch of people through the door. The system was crawling and they resorted to manual paperwork so long as they could get the upgrade eligibility code.

I was the first person to complete the purchase there and had to endure the press pics :(

Left the store shortly after 8.30am with a 16gb iPhone 3G :)

To all the people angry/frustrated - bad as things are you must be finding this more pleasurable than just waiting a few days for the queues to die down ?

Just come from main Cardiff CPW (just a few doors from O2 store, I was 3rd in Q.
When I joined the Q at CPW the Q at O2 was huge, at least 30 to 40 people deep.

In total due to O2 systems going down it all took about 2 hrs.

Got my 16gb version (black no whites) but they only had a few and sold out very quick, they had loads n loads of 8gb versions there tho.

I've never previously rated CPW and had heard all the horror stories, only went there as the Q at O2 was so huge but the CPW staff were superb frankly.

I will definately be writing a letter of complaint to O2 over their shambles of a system, especially for us upgraders, but also letter of praise to CPW for the care their Cardiff staff took with us.

I was an iPhone upgrader btw and had bought my iPhone v1 from O2 on iDay back in November.

PS I'm not normally this effusive lol

they have to be CPW contracts..... they are still with O2 but through CPW!

I bought mine at CPW but the guy told me that it was a direct O2 contract i had!!!

I bought my original iPhone from an O2 shop, and I have just managed to upgrade to the 3G iPhone in a CPW shop.

Well I had all the fun of the O2 online ordering system system **** itself when I was putting in bank details on monday morning

Then today arrived at Cookstown O2 shop at 08:00 am on the dot. 3 customers getting processed and 1 guy waiting. Each small local shop only gets 2 x 16BG models and they had both gone. They said they might have more stock mid next week but things were changing by the minute and not hopeful.

Drove to Dungannon (fool) got there at 08:30 and they had NO OPENED. 5 single businessmen type guys in cars sitting outside with a look on their face as if to say dont you even think of walking through that door before me.

I drove on.

Right thats its off to the far east in 10 days and I am now not going through the hassle of PAC codes and changing over numbers before that.

To be honest this is making me look to alternatives like and Samsung F700 or what will replace it. Its a pity it interfaces with Mac's so badly.

At least Samsung manufactures in countries that dont act like Nazi germany circa 1938
