Apologies for me resurrecting this thread however I was wondering how you got on with building this extremely advanced system. If you haven't got round to building it I would advise you talk directly to some Apple engineers as a bespoke solution may be most advisable in this scenario.

I don't think it matters. I didn't re-read the thread, but Trans Intl sells 4GB modules, and apparently they work:

Currently, 32GB of this memory is $4400.

The word is that the 4GB modules weren't available to test at the time of the original release of the Mac Pro, so they couldn't say that they will work. It's often the case that Apple's towers can take bigger RAM than what Apple claims, usually they are too hard to buy or not available anyways. If Mac Pro gets updated soon, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets bumped to 32GB max capacity.

I did build the system this summer, with 16 GB of RAM (8 sticks, 2 GB each) from Ramjet and 4 TB of disk (4 disks, 1 TB each) from CDW (they were Seagate disks). My Mac Pro has three of the GeForce 7300 cards, and it has three Apple monitors, each 30 inches.

You can see it when it first arrived at this thread:

There's a pictures in that thread too, if you take a quick look (it's post 34 of the thread, I think).

The price for 8 sticks of 4 GB RAM (32 GB total) was just unjustified at this point, in the end.
