If they don't release the mini with Touch id, I'm gonna be pissed. If they don't release a mini with a retina display, i'll be disappointed. If there's some technical reason why they can't make a retina iPad mini, fine, but Touch ID should be implemented across the board. No excuses there.

The feel & performance of the Touch ID button is WAY better than the regular crappy home button.

Retina on Mini2?

I don't know, I am kind of demur to say that the mini 2 will have a retina display. Mini 3? I am sure of it but Mini 2 is 50/50 for me. Do people WANT retina? Of course!

I think is confirmed with that Wall Street journal story provided by apple

The ipad mini 2 will have a retina

It's been two generations since the iPad 3 has 1GB of ram,
I assume the iPad 5 will come with 2GB of ram and 1 GB for the mini.
Hope it'll also come with 32GB base storage.

This ones easy,

Extrapolating from the "leaked cases" and the iPhone event

existing Ipad and iPad mini re-released in colored cases,

"new" ipad and ipad mini released in new grey/white/gold colours with fingerprint sensors and upgraded CPUs

no retina for ipad mini (they will release that by easter next year and p off everyone who buys an iPad mini 2 pre-xmas)

Nothing else.

this is the year of apple failing to innovate at all, wait for next year for that people

What do you think the performance of the G6630 GPU (as the iPhone had the GPU under it, and the iPad is a much higher res.) will be? The jump(In GFLOPS) from the iPhone 5 to 5S was around 2.6X(28.8 to 76.8GFLOPS). So if the iPad gets the same jump, we should see around 200GFLOPS. Even if it was only 150, the performer in the graphics department will be great :)

I really hope you right :)

Also game controller reveal sometime in the event when showcasing the amazing iPad graphics.

you forgot to include os x mavericks final release announcement along with updates to macbook pro, etc.

the event day and time sounds about right. im guessing invites for the event on october 15th then :)

I'm pretty sure there were legible rumours that the iPad event would actually happen on October 15th. We could see invites soon.

i think its gonna be the 22nd.. the event was on the 23rd last year, both days are a tuesday.

I have updated my thinking to include TouchID on the Mini 2. I now believe that TouchID is a core feature that will find its way to all products (including Macs eventually).

It seems like a bit much on the cost side to expect a retina display and TouchID, but perhaps they will raise the price to accommodate.

I wonder if the move to a 64-bit architecture will negate the need for an "X" variant iPad chip.

Anyone with knowledge on how these SoC's work that could shed light on this?

64bit really doesn't do much. It's been marketing fluff.

A7 is just in general a new generation significantly more advanced SOC, akin to A5 to A6 upgrade.

----------

- Apple will announce the new products.
- People will complain about features.
- People will complain about price.
- People will claim that Apple lost its innovation.
- People will claim that they are switching to competitor xxx.
- Apple stock will plummet again.

- Apple will have record breaking sales of the new product.

At least one person has paid attention to history LOL :D

How long does it typically take for case makers to make a bluetooth keyboard case that's pretty good. i want to use this as the alternative a laptop.

I actually would be a bit surprised if the 2G iPad mini now has a Retina Display resolution touchscreen. That could raise the price of the price of the iPad mini and could cannibalize sales of the full-sized iPad.

Apple sells iOS devices they could care less about cannibalization. The iPad mini and iPad are two premium devices. Not sure why you would be surprised about a retina screen. Last year the battery technology and chip efficiency were not there. The A7 chip will be efficient enough to run a retina screen on the mini and not to mention the improved battery tech over last year

I'm expecting the new iPad mini to sport a retina and A7 SOC. I did initially expect it to come with the A6x but given the move to 64bit with the A7 and it having the same graphical performance as the A6x, the A7 seems more logical for the mini. This allows more devices to be 64bit compliant while leaving the extra graphical grunt of the A7x for the iPad 5.
I don't see touch ID coming to the new mini this time around, they need to keep features behind for future revisions and retina is an absolute must have with the mini this time due to increased competition and it also being the biggest drawback/disappointment of the mini on release.
In summary - retina for the mini for people to upgrade to. A7 to increase 64bit adoption and no touch id to have a feature in reserve for a future upgrade.

This won't be a problem since most people, myself included, will not be buying a mini until it does have a retina display.

why would you need an A7X? Wouldn't the A7 be powerful enough?

The A7X would be for the iPad 5. If the iPad 5 had the exact same SOC as the iPhone 5s (A7), the iPhone 5s would outperform it graphically due to having a lower native resolution to drive. The A7X would ensure the iPad 5 is the flagship model for graphics performance.

i bet "most" people will buy the iPad mini, in gold, non-retina this xmas if such a beast exisits

Seems "Most" people have no taste

It's definitely more of a champagne color than a gold color

im sticking with my classic monolith black iPhone 5 and iPad mini, hoping the iPhone 6 and iPad mini 3 next year are available in the same classic black..

if i want a colour to express myself in my accessories, i want that colour to be black :D

I miss the black :( the mini looked awesome in a black slate. I might be going for white or gold this time.
