Does anyone have problem with track changes in word? My MBP with 16 GB ram and SSD makes sound like a jet engine when working with decent sized documents (30 pages, maybe 20 MB cause of images) and then eventually crash. Word is one of the only apps that crashes in Mac OS X for me. Don't have much hope for the new update :(
[doublepost=1452716784][/doublepost]Lol. I think Microsoft single handedly contributed to green house gas emissions equivalent to of a small country through its poor coding practices :D

Really?

Every application I use is in full-screen. Notification Center keeps me informed but I do all of my work in full screen except when I need to do work in multiple MS Excel windows. MBP Core i7 Retina w/ 24" Dell 4K UltraSharp display.

I'm reading this thread in full-screen. Running these apps all in full-screen:
  • Reeder
  • Mail
  • Slack
  • Messages
  • Safari
  • iCal
  • Excel
  • Outlook
  • Photos

Bbedit and Deliveries and Lync are in Window mode

You can make a generalization that "Fullscreen is used by very few people" but saying "nobody users it" is technically incorrect.

there are dozens of us! :)

===============

The more important feature Microsoft Office has yet to adopt is Multi-Core support for more than 2 cores. The average file-size of my MS Excel documents is 50 megabytes. Some of them are 80MB.

The fact that I have a beach-ball w/ only 2 of my 8 cores used(Core i7 Quad-Core and Hyperthreading) and my computer isn't even breaking a sweat yet MS Office is costing me valuable time....it's embarrassing. It sometimes takes 60 seconds to render some operations and the CPU could take on more tasks if Office would adopt Grand Central and Full Cocoa

Where'd you get the monitor/stand combo? Looks pretty useful for my home office.

Full screen + gestures on 15 rMBP here. Switching between full screen safari, mail and sublime mostly. sometimes I'll have a full screen excel or 2 open.

cmd + shift + tab

So I have to play spider with my fingers? Meh. Still better to see all open windows with Mission Control as you know exactly which window you need to go to (photoshop I usually have 5+ documents open). Plus, those icons are not always in the same order, so you have to SEARCH for them. The dock doesnt have pose this problem, you know where your app is.

I get it though, you like full screen. Most people don't, but the point still stands: Apple needs to conform to the needs of it's users and add the simple option in system preferences by making the green button have two behaviours; full screen or maximize. Essentially reversing the behaviour when holding the option key and clicking on it. Why they haven't done this is pretty ridiculous.

The best feature of full screen Outlook is when you click new message - promptly crashes the entire program. Its a feature .

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously. Every single week my older Outlook for Mac version literally has a security update... Wth!!!!!

And some of you guys cry salty tears about Apple products.

Apple should just add an option in system settings to make the green button act as a 'maximize window' without going into fullscreen. It'd satisfy everyone.

Is it really that much of a pain to hold down the "Option" key while clicking the green button to go into "maximize window" mode?

Although I suppose it would be nice if Apple give us the option of swapping the behavior, so that Option+[GreenButton] was "full screen", and [GreenButton] by itself was "maximize window".

BTW, in response to all the "nobody uses fullscreen" opinions... I and many of my nearby office coworkers use full screen every day.

EDIT: I was responding to your earlier comment from earlier in the thread. And just now I notice you posted almost the same thing as I did not long ago. :)

Hot corners. Learn to use them with mission control.

If you only work in two apps, sure, then it's easy to toggle between them. But this doesn't explain how you'd work with many applications at once. What are you going to do, keep hitting cmd+tab until you land on the right app? God forbid you go past it and have to tab through all of your apps again until you get to the desired one.

Mission control...it seems you missed the part where I mentioned that I try to keep my fingers on the keyboard as I find it more productive, I find reaching for the mouse slows me down as my hands are mostly on my keyboard and the hotkeys are muscle memory now. If your hands are always on the mouse it makes sense to navigate with the mouse, but my hands are on my keyboard. As for hot corners, I have used them occasionally, mainly for putting my mac to sleep but I kept activating them accidentally, don't worry I am familiar with them.

I don't really use CMD-Tab much, I prefer 'ctrl arrow keys', I mentioned them twice, they're pretty straightforward to use. Also, if you were to go past the app while using cmd tab you can just hold shift to reverse the switcher.

I think we should be able to appreciate that we have different workflows. You use photoshop, illustrator etc so you're using a mouse a lot, so it makes sense that you would navigate with it. I mostly have an IDE or text editor open along with terminal and a browser with a few tabs containing documentation etc, so my hands are mostly on the keyboard and pretty much the only time I use a trackpad/mouse is for file management and scrolling in the browser.

Does the full screen also apply to Excel Word and Powerpoint?
They've had fullscreen since Office 2016 launched, Outlook was the exception.

So say you have 8 apps, you have to go through potentially 7 until you get to the right one?

How would I drag and drop files into Outlook from the finder when in full screen?

I agree with you on full screen in OS X. I rarely use it. The animations (sliding back and forth) when switching between full screen apps is just too daunting in my opinion. Plus, like you say the menu bar and dock gets hidden, and it takes too long to bring down the menu bar and the entering/exiting animations are just too intrusive I think. Plus I can't switch to or between full screen window with the keyboard combo I've set to switch between windows of the frontmost application. :(

I can see some occasions where it's nice to have the fullscreen option, but at its current state I don't think it will ever be a part of my workflow. It just slows to slow and cumbersome. I prefer just using the app switcher (cmd tab) which I have mapped to the scroll wheel button of my mouse using the software SteerMouse. With that ”Switch Application” feature there I can click once (and release) to bring up the app switcher, then click on the app I want to bring forward, or click and hold down the button and point at the app I want to bring forward, then release the button to do the switch.

I feel this saves me a lot of time every day since – at least the way I work – consists of switching a lot between apps. Not having to move to the Dock and hund for icons there all the time, but rather being able to keep the mouse curser around the middle of the screen I think is great.

You can't be having that many apps running at the same time, can you? I mean, I would get irritated on all the animations of full screen sliding back and forth when using ”ctrl arrows” to switch between them. I think it's much quicker to use ”cmd tab” and also full screen disables the ability to switch between windows in the active application using a keyboard combo (i.e. ”Move focus to the next window” in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts).

"vast majority"? got a link for that assertion?

and I'm not following on the lack of dock problem -- I use 3-finger swipes to move between apps, the desktop, or mission control. what are you talking about?

I Know what he means. I actually prefer outlook in fullscreen than excel as i don't need to have things open side by side for outlook but excel i will have multiple spreadsheets open that i copy and paste between and i find the fullscreen on these apps slows me down.

Are word and excel 2016 still using more CPU than Office 2011? I've frequently seen Word use around 50% of CPU for a normal 3000 word essay! Didn't have this problem with Office 2011.
I have the exact same issue. 2011 will suffice till they fix it!

I still cannot comprehend the contacts mess that is in Outlook for Mac. In Outlook for Windows, contacts can be shown as "business cards" and are sorted correctly. In Outlook for Mac, it's a disasterous mess of unsorted, unviewable crap. Or am I missing something?

Looks like the Ergotron LX Dual Stacking Arm with a Notebook Tray accessory on the lower arm. I checked out but opted for Herman Miller Flo Dual for my displays and a Flo Plus and tray for my laptop) for my set up (I saw it first in a Homeland episode...) the H-M setup is IMHO more attractive and I like the mechanics of the arm much better.

No, you're right.

Holding the option button will allow you to do just that.

Yes, but that takes two hands.

I'd say that 90% of the time I want to zoom the window. Maybe 10% of the time, I want to go to fullscreen. The default behavior of that button is backwards for the way I work.

All of this "Nobody ever does that" or "Everyone I know does that" nonsense is really just an outgrowth of the fact that Apple loves to give us features, but hates to give us options.

Vast majority of us have no need for it as it hides the dock and menu, ultimately making multitasking a pain in the ass. It really is a redundant feature, one that is actually detrimental to getting things done quickly. Apple should just add an option in system settings to make the green button act as a 'maximize window' without going into fullscreen. It'd satisfy everyone.
I do agree that making the green button default to full screen was a weird choice, and I like the idea of having it configurable instead. But I'll point out that more than half of Mac users are on small-screen laptops, making full screen paired with multiple spaces a huge improvement in multitasking. As many windows as I want, all within a swipe or two of each other, and all completely maximized to use all the available screen space? Yes, please.

i found better snap tool much better
The extra half-inch of vertical screen space I get using full screen makes the whole thing worth it for me on small-screened laptops.

Do you not use multiple desktops? It's a nice feature that completely eliminates your concern. A quick gesture or apple+tab and you switch back. Keep outlook full screen on one desktop.
