I am trying to attach a screenshot of the Windows Excel 2007. Unforunately it's in German but it should be okay to get an idea.
That's a new interface that came about in v2007, but the core functionality has not changed since....maybe v5? (v2007 is really v12) Except for sort by color. Thanks, I was just checking.

Agreed. All I see here is a giant, jumbled mess.
Look into customization. Seriously. The attached is mine for Excel.

One question I've got, and it might take some digging to get the answer -- Word for Windows 2007 introduced a new equation editor, incompatible with the one before and the one in Word for Mac 2008. Does Word for Mac 2011 support the new equation format?

A second question, in Excel, is the Solver back?

Wow... you asked the same question as me, in the same exact moment. :D

I don’t use Numbers or Excel very often, so ignore any ignorance, but that still looks like a jumbled mess.

This is how I managed to get some functionnality: put the most stuff I could in the toolbar. Get rid of the need to go hunting in the menus.

The ribbon does much better than my "custom" toolbars. Everything I need is there, while my toolbar is incredibly incomplete. I bet you have never used Word 2007. Ribbons, once you're used to them (not very long... just need to remember where stuff is, maybe an hour or so), are much more productive.

Hellhammer, could you show me the equation editor in Word? This is the feature I want the most, I'm tired of using the ancient 1997 equation which is still bundled with 2008...

This is what I got when I went Insert>Equation (the exact screen as soon as I clicked on Equation). I hope that's what you wanted to know/see.

I used Word 07 for a few years before I got my Mac, and my school has them ruffing off their [ridiculously slow] Windows XP Embedded server.

I was not a fan of the ribbon interface. If I purchased Office for Mac ’11, I would just make it as bare minimal as I could and then just access things from the search menu.

What are the System requirements?

Excel 11.5.9 has a bad habit of ignoring the keyboard. Have you noticed any problems? Of course, it could be my keyboard.

Just one question and you can make my day:

Since VBA is back, does this mean the Data Analytics ToolPak for Excel is back?

I headed to Tools>Add-Ins but there were no Add-Ins available for me to select. I browsed my machine and located the Add-Ins folder in Applications>Microsoft Office 2011 but there was nothing inside that either.

At first, I didn't like the Ribbon in Office 2007.

Now that I am used to it, I wish the Mac version had the same Ribbon. Having the same ribbon would definitely make it easier to go back and forth between home (Mac) and work (Windows) for those who have that situation. On a quick view, it looks like it's closer to the Windows version.

I just don't like how office for mac looks : / Too many tabs and break away windows (at least office 2008).

I myself LOVE iWork but that being said, my office needs are extremely basic and MS office confuses the **** out of me lol.

I like the simple, easy methods of iWork but I do sometimes get the occasional formatting issue when submitting documents from Pages as .doc files so I thought about trying the new office. I definitely would if they get rid of the tons of little pop up windows.

entourage to Outlook

You are so lucky can't wait for my update. One question I am using entourage did you find emails and address book etc carried over without any hitch into Outlook for MAC?

Synching from Outlook

Can you please check if synching from Outlook to address book/notes/ical and thence to Me.com works better without the duplication of entries, which was frequently a problem with Entourage.

Thanks

Wilson

Exactly. IMO the Office for Mac 2011 looks very "Windowsy" and doesn't fit into OS X that well but it's easier for people to switch from Windows to Mac version. Besides, it's more important how the app works than how it looks.

Oh, and BTW, congrats of your promotion! :)

I'm with you on this.

For me, it doesn't mater if it is Windows like or Mac like. It's merely a tool that I use on both platforms to get work and personal things done. So for me the more the versions are alike the better.

Thanks. :)

It looks like Office has looked for the last ten years.
When is a UI revolution coming!!??!!!!

Outlook still sucks.

Compared to ANY Windows version it still lacks a good HTML/styling editor.

While some would pooh pooh that, internally here, people love to make html emails with tables and colors and fun things.

Looks like Ill still be running VMware and Win7 Outlook.

WTF M$, cant you make the two suites ******** alike for once?!

I completely agree. In fact, one of the primary reasons a Mac user chooses MS Office is to have compatibility with Windows users. Since I'm constantly providing technical support to Windows users of MS Office, it would be helpful to me if the Windows and Mac versions had the exact same interface, so I could say "click here, select that, etc." and they would know what I'm talking about.

I realize the ribbon toolbar is something I'll have to learn to live with to accomplish that end, but I still don't like it. Customizing it only makes it more difficult to guide others, since mine wouldn't be configured the same. I just think it was foolish to change the UI to that extent, making users have to hunt for commands when they used to know exactly where they were. IMO, it's a negative impact on productivity, without any significant benefits to justify the change.

Sometimes change is good. But change for the sole purpose of change, not so much.
