WTF M$, cant you make the two suites ******** alike for once?!
You would think that with all their talent they could do this. Guess it must be in the too hard box.

At least now the menus are consistent across the office apps. Remember in the early days when they weren't? It seem each app was completely different interface wise.

So at least the Ribbon is good in that regard, although maybe not the best way to do things.

<snip good stuff> Sometimes change is good. But change for the sole purpose of change, not so much.
I found this statement interesting.

It seems like Microsoft is stuck in a loop of change at times. I guess that drives sales, training, and support jobs.

I think it's by design - I have read before that the MacBU wants the interface to be familiar but not exact since the two OS's have different interfaces.

I notice that the Inspector button is still shown on the ribbon/toolbar. Can you show a screenshot of what is included in the Inspector?

Personally I have always hated the ribbons in Office 2007 onwards. I have used it extensively and still have to hunt around to find the less used functions.

I have always thought the Inspector is a great way of doing things. I'd rather all ribbons were removed, and all formatting etc were done through the inspector dialogue. Maybe I am living in the past but I find it fast and very effective.

Just me maybe!

One final request..... in Excel, can you see what the Pivot Table looks like. This really sucks in Office 2008 and is a very poor relation to Office 2007.

Thanks for your tireless efforts.

My university has a campus wide agreement with Microsoft. I just noticed that Office 2011 was available through that agreement. In Word it says Version 14.0.0 (100825) if that helps anyone. Looks like they are rolling it out to enterprise customers. We had Win7 about 2 weeks before the public release as well.

Office 2011 looks nice but I haven't had a chance to play with it much. I use 2007 on the PC and I've grown to love the ribbon (didn't like it at first I admit). I've never liked Office 2008 on the Mac very much. It seems disorganized. I like the push to move to a similar feeling on both platforms.

I don’t use Numbers or Excel very often, so ignore any ignorance, but that still looks like a jumbled mess.
Well, it's MY jumbled mess. I put everything where I want it, and am used to where everything is. And there are only about 2 functions I EVER use that aren't on this tab, those I know about on regular tabs. It isn't just Excel, you need many functions available with any program you use frequently. Whether it is mixed in the old menu/toolbar system, or in the current Ribbon, it's a jumbled mess if you see it all at once. So hide it if you like, but the real problem to me was always finding the button/menu that you need. Customize your computer to what you need and productivity goes up.
While some would pooh pooh that, internally here, people love to make html emails with tables and colors and fun things.
And we hate those people. I have one that sends emails out with a background so dark brown you can barely read the black text. WTH?!

I just installed my copy and it's a vast improvement over 2008. Still a M$ product though... I'll use Excel and occasionally word. I thought I was going to be tempted by Outlook but... the lack of Exchange 2003 support seals the deal. Still OSX Mail for me and I'm happy about it. Huge improvement over 2008 however, I have to give Mr. Softie his due.

MS Office 2011+1 should be amazing if it's full cocoa. Maybe then my IT infrastructure will update Exchange and I'll be able to use it.

Exactly why I am not interested. Many companies still have Exchange 2003 and have no plans to update. It would seems like they are missing a huge market by doing this. Why?

Whatever works for you I guess. I have basic needs as a student. If I need to do a project, I rarely need to send an excel file, I would just export it as a PDF and print it or send it to them. The importance of using Office for Mac will probably increases as your office suite needs increase.

I personally like to keep the toolbar minimal and then just do this if I can’t find something:

Same! I can't download it right now cause it's busy (grrr) but I hope it works a lot like the Windows version. I'm used to the 07 Ribbon and hopefully things are similar.

looks like it will be a worthy upgrade maybe i'll finally upgrade from office for mac 2004 lol :p

Because MS has no reason to port 7 year old code that was never designed for Mac when they were already depreciating said code on the Windows with something that MS designed to be more portable to other platforms like OSX.

Seriously - the exchange code for Exchange 2003 was depreciated and replaced 3 years ago - it was never intended for other platforms and re-writing it would have been a waste of time considering the replacement - EWS is the Microsoft supported protocol. You might as well ask why MS never ported BOB over or ActiveX - it just plain isn’t compatible with the Mac Platform and it wasn’t worth it to re-write the code.

Office for Mac has had 3 versions since Exchange 2003 came out - it is not going to be released - MS considers the code not worth porting. They have to draw the line at some point.

Yes, I would agree. However, cash strapped institutions aren't exactly in a place to be replacing their communication backends. In fact, the licensing terms for my organization are such that we're going another route. Go figure, the only M$ software product that I can stand is too expensive for us to use. All is well, at least I have OSX Mail.

While I agree technically, it is still a loss for MS in that many institutions now have Exchange 2003 and are not going to update (mostly they have no reason to update because 2003 does everything that they need). Updating software costs money and businesses are not going to waste money unless there is something in it for them. So for me (and the many others like me) that means we will simply not get to use the new MS Office. I am not going to ask my company to update to something that still uas to use OWA to connect to exchange.

Was able to grab a retail copy and I must say, I'm enjoying the speed 2011 brings.

Word 2008 would take an eternity to open. I would be stuck on that splash screen forever.

2011 is much snappier, the splash screen time is drastically reduced and there is no "Allow Connection" pop-up that came with 2008.

Big improvement in my opinion.

Yep...just installed it and played with it a bit. We use to give MS the boot and they really always deserve it buut Office 2011 seems a huge improvement over 2008 and it is worth mentioning it.

I installed it and messed with Word for a little while. It seemed pretty great, but I have a few problems with it.
  • Things are automatically added to you dock after installation
  • Things that should be optional installs aren't - Messenger, RDC
  • The suite programs install in a folder in Applications -- I hate this
  • Tons of necessary files to the programs are installed in ANOTHER folder inside that subfolder. Microsoft is too good for complete .app packages?
  • You are first greeted with a jumbled mess. I would like to be greeted with a simple interface, and then customize out from there, not the other way around.

does the new oulook use pst files as previously rumored? This was a big deal in all the migrations I have had to do.

  • You had an option to uncheck that during Installation (There was something to the right called Custom/Customize where you could just uncheck that option)
  • Look above
  • SAME! I hate it when Apps do this. iWork did the exact same thing and it annoys me. Why make users perform the extra click?
  • I think they put the "main" programs in the main folder and the rest in the sub-folder but I agree with you.
  • Meh. I like Ribbon.

Apparently the final build has hit the torrent sites now:

DAMN! That was quick

I'm quite liking Office 2011... it just feels more stable and unified than previous releases. I'm liking the ribbon as well, it gives the window a much cleaner look than having separate toolbars. Speed is greatly improved over 2008 as well. Good job MS!
