Yes I read it and found him to be bit picking on certain items. From many Beta users I've heard really good things about it. I'm also going from version 2004.

Compared to MS Excel 2008 Excel 2011 is really great. Because of the way Excel 2008 & carried forward to Excel 2011 my horizontal size expanded 17% with no increase in vertical size. That means that I miss a little over a column on my tax forms. Since printing is from left to right, that's all of the numbers & amounts. That means that until I can get rid of that 17% I will be staying with Excel for the time being.

I think it's better. I've spent most of my time in Powerpoint so far and a little in Excel. Haven't opened Word and didn't get Outlook.

I switched to a Mac for work in late 2008 and Office 2008 was really a step backwards. This is definitely better though I know some people will hate it. I searched for 10 minutes trying to add a title to a chart in Excel which was irritating. (it's right there btw).

With the Ribbon you do lose a little height on the window -- something to think of. Might be a way to park the ribbon on the side.

Just install

Hello. I own two Macs. I may buy one more. I am considering:

Office for Mac Home & Student 2011 or
Office for Mac Academic

Q1: Can I install any of these on all the Macs I own? Don't know if I can run the same program on multiple-machines at the same time. I probably run the program on a single machine one at a time.

Q2: Does the above apply to other language version? I plan to buy the Japanese rather than English version.

Q3: I got Office 2004 and upgraded to Office 2008 for free as I bought it few months before 2008 was released. I understand that Mac Home & Student 2011 does not include Outlook nor Entourage. Can I keep the old outlook and entourage while installing the 2011 version of Words, EXCEL and PowerPoint? Don't know if the programs are compatible with each other.

Q4: Is it better to manually uninstall Office 2008 before installing Office 2011? I no longer have the Office 2004 DVD and I do not have the upgrade CD for 2008 with me now. If I install 2011 and do not like it, there is no way of going back.

Thanks.

Just leave the old versions installed.

Yay! I got the software today from Amazon. Installing it now. Already excited about using the new Outlook. :)

Does it still use .doc or .docx as a primary format for Word or is there a new format? Excel and Powerpoint still the same format?

No resend in Outlook - just how dim can Microsoft get?

I cannot believe that Microsoft have released the final version without a resend button/menu item. I installed Office 2011 yesterday from my expensively purchased 2 install disc. I then sent a message in error (Outlook had not brought across my default account from Entourage) from the wrong email address to a company, which I know only accepts emails from my registered address. I looked in vain for resend and could not get my head round the fact that it was missing. Forward is not the answer. It is a weak work around. We have all sent emails without the attachment, sent them to a person or a company's wrong email address or needed to send with an alteration.

Outlook is also not retaining display preferences for view panel. The viewing panel keeps disappearing. I am afraid I find the conversations feature just an annoyance and it keeps turning itself back on like a visit from an unpleasant relative.

I also don't like the page switcher at the bottom left of the screen. It is not an issue on my iMac but on my MBP 13", that means that not all my different archive mail boxes have room to display and I have to scroll up and down. There is plenty of space to have this on the top bar but that is not an option. For small screens, you cannot drag the bar between the message list and the view panel over to the left far enough.

All in all, about 4 out of 10 is my score for it. On the plus side, it seems more stable than Entourage after repairing permisssions, which was badly needed after installing both Office 2011 and iLife 11. I note that Mactopia are not accepting new registrations at the moment. Maybe their server is overloaded by people wanting to complain. This is a program that was not yet ready for release.

I am considering asking for my money back and reverting to Office 2008. The improvements in Word, Excel and Powerpoint are marginal from my usage. I had hoped that Word for Mac would become much more of a desk top publishing program with more flexible picture and layout options, where Pages, for all its other faults, is better. A big disappointment from an update that I was really looking forward to.

Here is the full version (not Student) available for £37.95 as a download for students - http://www.software4students.co.uk/product.aspx?productname=microsoft_office_for_mac_2011

If anyone does this let us know how it goes

I did this yesterday - was just about to post it on here :D

In terms of ordering it's pretty simple. You choose the software, pay for it, wait for your eligibility to be confirmed (seems to be automatic - maybe because I used a .ac.uk e-mail) and then you get your software.

It's currently only available as a download. Total size is a little over 800MB - download speed from their severs was about 400KBps. You get a .IMG file, which contains a .DMG file. It's the full suite - Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and the usual add-ons. This version requires activation.

Fantastic bit of software for under £40 :)

Yeah, it is a completely legit website. I've bought several copies of software from them in the past and have never had problems. :)

Hup

Anyone got a firm date on 2011 availability via HUP yet..? Seems like it could be any time in the next three months from what I've read.

Working for an aerospace company, I am lucky enough to take advantage of free & discounted MS software via HUP and would really like a copy of Office 2011 in time for my shiny new iMac I've been saving for! :D

Much better than microsofts own and cheaper! I went onto the microsoft website on the day of launch to download, put in my uni email and they said they need to check my eligibility. Haven't heard anything since.

Thanks a lot for the link!:)

I just got a reply from the Microsoft Home Use Program, looks like some of us have to wait to get Office 2011 for $9.95:

Looks like for Office 2008 it was 2.5 months from release to availability in the HUP.

It is available in my TechNet Subscription. This is only the second Mac application I've seen posted to TechNet (RDP is the other).
