Just ordered the business twin pack. Hopefully it's as good as an improvement as they say. Office 2008 was okay, but it crashed a few times on me and it was a bit slow (and didn't work well with Spaces).

Look forward to using Outlook instead of Mail.

HUP not until Jan 2011

I am extremely disappointed in the delay for the HUP users. I know that IT dept's are already able to install it on business computers, but the same people who will be using it at work will have to wait 2-3 months to use it at home? That's just not cool. The IT guy at my place thought that it might even be on HUP before release, and now it's going to be 2-3 months after release... Sigh. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less.

Update: I have sent an email to try to confirm this with the HUP store, and through other channels, I am hearing an early November timeframe.

It really pains me to say this, but Microsoft did well with this release.

It looks/feels closer to the Windows version and it launches very fast. 2008 was very slow to launch and I never really liked the pallet, especially on a laptop.

I only have the home version, so no comments on Outlook. I hate Windows Outlook (slow, clunky) so I'm find with good old Apple Mail.

The Mac Outlook is a totally new program, and sucks much less than Outlook on Windows. I still find Apple Mail works better, though.

+1 I have used Outlook at work and really do not feel comfortable with it. Apple Mail, works well for me. I am holding of on Office for Mac '11 for now. I really would only be using word and excel (I use Keynote for my presentations) so I do not see the benefit v expense right now. But that's just my situation.

What a PITA!

I went to BB today to get myself a Home and Office 2pk. First they sold me the 1pk, went to activate the code and when they handed me the box, I pointed out they sold me the wrong version so they had to reverse the transaction. Then they sold me the correct version but said they were having a tough time registering the code and said I might want to wait a few hours for the registration to go through. So this evening, I hopped online to retrieve my serial number only to find out that BB still hasn't activated the number yet! :(

I've been running the volume version here for a few weeks and I can say with certainty that this it the best Office for Mac since I started using Mac's around a decade ago. Outlook is great, it is a fully Cocoa application which will mark the beginning of the other parts of Office gradually moving over to Cocoa which should mean using the system dictionary rather than the built in one.

As for Word, Excel and Powerpoint, they're very stable and very reliable, I've had no problems in terms of 2010 and 2007 compatibility with the Windows world.

Nope, and I cannot see when that will change. Technet is Microsoft's repository for evaluating Windows products.

Office 2008 was never hosted there and the only Mac program I see is Virtual PC. Microsoft has no interest in encouraging people towards OS X.

Office 2011 went RTM a while back. That is the time Microsoft's software gets hosted on technet and MSDN replacing any open betas. If it isn't there yet, it's not suddenly going to pitch up now.

Good news for those of us with a TechNet subscription. I've just checked my TechNet standard login and Office Mac 2011 is there. I've just started downloading.

Hello. I own two Macs. I may buy one more. I am considering:

Office for Mac Home & Student 2011 or
Office for Mac Academic

Q1: Can I install any of these on all the Macs I own? Don't know if I can run the same program on multiple-machines at the same time. I probably run the program on a single machine one at a time.

Q2: Does the above apply to other language version? I plan to buy the Japanese rather than English version.

Q3: I got Office 2004 and upgraded to Office 2008 for free as I bought it few months before 2008 was released. I understand that Mac Home & Student 2011 does not include Outlook nor Entourage. Can I keep the old outlook and entourage while installing the 2011 version of Words, EXCEL and PowerPoint? Don't know if the programs are compatible with each other.

Q4: Is it better to manually uninstall Office 2008 before installing Office 2011? I no longer have the Office 2004 DVD and I do not have the upgrade CD for 2008 with me now. If I install 2011 and do not like it, there is no way of going back.

Thanks.

I can't answer all your questions, but I try:
Q1) The Home & Student version gives you 3 licenses for your household computers but no Outlook, the Academic version is for one computer only.
Office requires online-activation so it probably notices if you try to install it on more than one computer.

Q2) I have the German version and the licencing terms seem to be similar to the English version. Don't know about Japanese...

Q3/4) I have just done a parallel installation of Office2008 and Office2011. They install in different folders and I could open the old version of Word along the new. There seem to be no interdependencies so far.

in-store "activation?"

What's with this in-store activation crap? I've never heard of such a thing for software. This DRM humbug is getting out of control. It is pathetic that people can't install the software they just bought. I don't care if it's a MS problem or a BB problem; the condition itself should never be able to block a legitimate user.

Office 2011 Home and student installed, works very nicely. Certainly better than the Office 2008 I was using.

Excel toolbars are now usable, and you can pretty much expect to find everything you use in its right place for the first time ever. All without having to have that sidebar monstrosity open.

Plus, there's no more excel input lag when editing spreadsheets on NAS volumes. That was a joke.

For me Office 2011 is all about the interface change to make it useful. I never bought into all the app trimmings such a onenote et al, as I got burned when they decided to remove MS picture manager. I no longer use anything but the core office applications.

Runs well on a late'08 MBP.

HUP Availability

I just got a reply from the Microsoft Home Use Program, looks like some of us have to wait to get Office 2011 for $9.95:
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Home Use Program online store.

We understand that you would like to know when will the Office 2011 for
Mac be available through the Home Use Program.

The Home Use Program only offers the most current release of Microsoft
Office available to our customers; Office 2008 for Mac is still
considered the most current release for version of Office for Mac
computers to date under the Home Use Program. However, the availability
of Office 2011 for Mac will take place in January 2011.

We appreciate your interest in our products and your patience regarding
this matter.

Sincerely,
Juvic A.

How did they sell you the wrong qty pack? There's a box for 1, and a box for 2. (1 & 3 for no outlook version) You take it off the shelf, not them.

I had no problems with the activation in store. I don't get that whole system anyway beside putting in one more 'deterrent' for people looking to pirate. That will be worked around soon. I also don't get why Apple didn't make them do the 1 desktop/1 laptop per license. I feel that's BS, but whatever.

Excel since 1985

"According to Wilfrid, three-quarters of all Mac users have Office installed on their machines."

Mmm... Okay, but who uses it?;)

During tax season & much of the rest of the year Excel is about all that I use. Acrobat/PDFPenPro & a web browser finishes that off. Word for printing bar codes on envelopes. I have little use for PowerPoint or KeyNote as they are only used to show someone else's information.

First off, at my BB all MS Office and Windows 7 software is kept in a locked glass case next to the service desk which prevents me from being able to "take it off the shelf." Second, I called the store earlier in the day to see if they had stock available which they obviously did. They took me name down and said they'd hold a copy behind the service desk for me. So, when I came in they grabbed the copy on the desk, scanned it, rang it up and went to activate the code. I never even had the box in my hands until she returned after trying to activate it. That's when I pointed out she'd sold me the wrong copy. She told me either she grabbed the wrong box when she set it aside earlier or in the 2 hours between when I called and when I came in, another associate must have swapped the boxes.

Whatever...as of this morning the 27 digit pin still isn't active. The person said if it wasn't active by this morning to call 1-800-BestBuy which I did. They forwarded me to a Geek Squad employee who told me they couldn't help and only set in home appointments and to go back to the store I bought it at. I asked them why the store associated told me to call them? The Geek Squad person said, "I don't know. Thanks for calling Best Buy." and then we hung up.

Should be getting H&S from Amazon in a couple of hours. Hopefully the activation code will work. In the meantime, procrastinating starting a presentation that I have to do so that I can work in the new version. I have serious performance issues with the old version and I'm hoping this will help.

That is one f'd up BB. Ours stocks the box in a plastic case with the security FOB. The only things locked up are new release games.

Cashier scanned for price, they had it at 149.99 on the sticker but it rang up 119.99 which was correct. She scanned the activation code. I got my 'free' $20 gift card with the purchase. Out the door. Installed it on my wife's MBP. Able to use within 10 minutes of putting the disc in the MBP.

I downloaded office 2011 yesterday- I was able to get a single license for just under $60 from my school (Washington State University, Go Cougs!). So far I am very impressed. It is a huge improvement over 2008 (imo).

I think it will make it much easier for me to switch between using my computer at work (a pc with office 2007) and my laptop. I wrote a paper using it last night, and I didn't find myself desperately searching for the functions I am used to having readily available on the pc version.

I also really like the inclusion of outlook. It took me a while to set up my .edu addresses's exchange account, but I think that is more an issue with our exchange server than with the functionality of the program. It's very nice to have my contacts, calendar, and e-mail accounts all in one program, rather than having them divided up between the standard mac applications.

I haven't yet explored ppt and xl, and I may be viewing this all through a euphoric filter out of the excitement of not having to use 2008 anymore. I really despised that version!

Though to be fair I am a relatively new mac user (2.5 years), and had been using 2007 on my personal computer before I purchased my mbp; so 2008 could have been more familiar and comfortable for life-long mac users.
