Official 2007 MLB Season Thread

Nothing is stopping the Devil Rays or Marlins from spending money but their owners. Don't say the Yankees and Red Sox are evil because no other team wants to spend money.

He must have been knocked out cold, the way he just toppled over. I doubt a helmet would have helped in that situation -- the ball caromed off the fence and hit him square in the face. One of the strangest things I've ever seen in a ballpark. Still I'm not sure that they shouldn't be handing out helmets to the fans in the field-level seats. I was at the game on Friday. One rocket foul ball mowed down fans on the third base side like grass. I don't think anybody was hurt, but it did remind me how much a prefer our seats in the reserve section behind home plate. Fouls hardly ever come within two sections, which is fine with me!

I'm sure a helmet wouldn't have helped this guy. I just meant that Vin probably would have mentioned it. There have been some recent predictions that eventually a fan will be killed in the stands and we'll go to Japan-style fences. It happened in the NHL a few years ago.

Yeah, he was definitely out. He bent over a little just as a reflex for a moment, then went down like a ton of bricks.

My favorite fan-beaning story is when Richie Ashburn once fouled one that hit a woman in the stands, which he felt terrible about. The game was stopped for a while. After his at-bat resumed, he fouled another one to the same area....and hit the same lady -- now being carried out on a stretcher! It turned out the woman was a good sport about the whole thing, and her and Ashburn became friends and exchanged letters for years afterward.

Honorable mention: a pitch from Bob Feller once was fouled off into the stands and hit is own mother. On Mother's Day.

yes, they hate the braves. i think they only like the yankees, red sox and mets. they will be having fun next weekend with the series that determines baseball good and evil apparently. they stuff down these teams down your throat and want you to like the red sox and hate the yankees, as if they are nesn. if you like the yankees, you are evil, if you hate the yankees, you're a good red sox fan apparently. they talk yankees red sox so much it makes me sick, and they act like there are no other teams. both of them are evil as they spend too much $$$ and just disgusting. they will make sure you watch, and then the other teams are just blah. sometimes i feel that they think everyone lives in the northeast. i think we need to succeed the midwest and eastern seaboard from the nation and place a capital in denver for our new nation, lol.

i think giants-dodgers is the better rivalry, that's hate there.

While I agree that the NY-Boston thing is way over-exposed, I'm not sure a Braves fan should be complaining about it too much. Thanks to TBS, there are legions of Braves fans across the country that have never attended one of their home games or even been to Atlanta. The Braves have had far more exposure and media attention over the last few decades than most teams that aren't in the Northeast, LA or Chicago.

ESPN is going to show good games, Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers. They want ratings and they wont get that showing Royals Mariners games. Most of the country does not care about the small market teams.

i just said that to make a point that espn has a streak of making the red sox look like good guys and the yankees sound like bad guys when they both spend bunches of cash (although i think these owners should pony up and spend some more cash than just let it sit and be lackluster), and say one is good because the red sox complain about the yankees spending too much money, when their payroll is nearly as high. if this was a small market team that couldn't spend alot, i would be more forgiving, but since they aren't, not too much so.

I'm sure it's been brought up already, but ....

this is the cub's year.

why?

because they're the cubs! If there's one thing i've learned growing up in the chicago metropolitan area, it's utter disappointment, and the stupidity to crave it the next season.

Cubs? Nope. They need to wait and make it an even 100 years of losing. Can't do this 99 year crap.

Gah!

I left Buehrle and all 79 of his glorious fantasy points on my bench. In favor of Solomon Torres, no less.

Worst. Manager. Ever.
