A-Rod is a traiter to the Mariners.

Good thing Ichiro signed a new contract. We're now 3 games behind the LA Angels. But that will change.;)

Peace, you're just a little late on that A-Rod comment. ;)

Yea, the M's are surprising everybody. I'd like to see them dethrone the Angels in the West.

So where does that leave Griffey?

Yankees won Red Sox lost, 9 games back.:)

How about them Phillies, 10,000 losses.:p The worst team in the history of professional sports.

And whats up with Mr sour grapes Sheffield.

The Braves are up next on that list of 10,000 loses. :p

I'm surprised the Cubs haven't achieved that status yet. But we are coming up on that century mark for last World Series.

As a St. Louisan and Cardinals fan, I'm proud of the fact that we were the team to beat the Phillies on their 10,000th loss!

Not that they didn't kick our asses the last 2 games, but whatever. 10,000 losses.....I think their little stroke of luck those games didn't last long :D

The Yankees have far fewer then 10,000 losses tho.;)

Granted the Phillies haven't been the winning-est franchise over the years, but they are also one of the oldest, so calling them the "worst team in history" is kind of unfair. I'm sure a lot of teams have far worse records overall, they just haven't been around as long as the Phillies.

Even nicer, Bonds goes oh-fer.

Even Vin Scully described Bonds as "humiliated," which I thought was a little harsh.

I don't give Dodger pitchers much credit for it though. Bonds' bat looked very slow, at least not like we're used to seeing. Past experience says he'll be hitting lasers again in a week, but he didn't look good this weekend.

Bonds himself described the situation as embarrassing. He used that very word, several times. He said he was embarrassed to be wearing the Giants uniform (considering they're in last place... but never mind).

I think it was Russ Martin who said the Dodgers got a little lucky with Bonds this weekend. But give the Dodger pitchers some credit -- they recognized that they were facing a sub-par Bonds and challenged him in several tough situations, with good results.

Also a little bit of redemption for Tomko this weekend. He's been making the case for a while that he's more comfortable as a starter. He may have earned himself the number five spot in the rotation again. We'll see next week.

His first inning was rough, but otherwise not too bad. With Schmidt out for the season and Wolf sidelined for at least another week, starting Tomko might be the best option even if he didn't earn it. On the other hand, are Tomko or Hendrickson worse than Wolf had been pitching recently?

I'm a little encouraged that they're hitting so well lately, even if I wish they showed a little more power. Any improvement that Nomar can get above his total blackout so far would be like trading for a new player.

No kidding. If anybody knows why Nomar is struggling, especially in the home run department, they sure aren't saying. It would be bizarre if he ended the season with four homers.

I really hope the fans don't boo Tomko when he takes the mound a Dodger Stadium next time, though I'm afraid they will. What is this, Philadelphia?

What is this, Philadelphia?

Anyone else think the Phillie-bashing has gotten out of hand? 10,000 losses in 124 years works out to winning about 47% of their games. A season of winning 47% of their games is a record of about 76-86. Not very good, but not really terrible.

Basically, the Phillies' all-time won-loss record suffers because they're one of the oldest teams (actually one of the oldest major sport league franchises on the planet) and they never had any winning dynasties. Similarly old teams like the Cubs and Braves have also had many losing seasons, but they also had many strong seasons. OK, so the Cubs' heyday was 100 years ago, but at least they had one.

Under those circumstances, I'd give the Phillies some credit for sticking around so long in the same city.

Uch, the Giants are a pathetic joke. Can't come close to beating the Dogs even once at home, Bonds is still hung-over from his big Monday night gala, Brian Sabean gets a contract extension and mouths more empty platitudes about "getting younger", know-nothing ownership that sinks a far too large a percentage of the payroll on Shawn Estes' half-brother?

Back me up to the vodka thread and give me several bottles, stat! And it can't be Winner's Cup vodka: the Giants won't have anything to do with winning for years to come. :(

That was my earlier point, essentially. Every team is going to lose 10,000 games, eventually, if they exist long enough. The Phillies just managed to get to this dubious landmark first, due mainly to longevity. Ironically, the Phils might even end up with a winning record this season. Currently, they don't suck any more than the Yankees, and arguably a lot less, when you consider the teams' respective payrolls.

My reference to booing fans is a somewhat different matter. Growing up, the only city where baseball fans regularly booed their own team was in Philadelphia -- nobody else would dream of booing the home team. Now I hear it quite a bit at other parks, and I don't care for it. I might groan audibly sometimes, but I will never hoot at my own team, like the notorious boo-birds in Philly.
