This phone from Google may actually unify the Andriod market rather than fragment.

I may get one for my wife if it comes out and T-Mobile carriers it at a discount. Too bad they aren't apparently working on one for the Verizon network.

No, but there are no competitors. Imagine where we would be if Apple wasn't pushing the envelope. Remember what cell phones were like before the iPhone.

Interesting logic. I'm curious to know who you think are the market share leaders are.

And if there are no competitors, how come every phone is not an apple phone?

Which probably means they left out the ATT 3G bands, similar to what Nokia did with the new N900; which means EDGE only unless Google adds them before release.

That is extremely doubtful. This device is obviously being designed to sold in the US. No way they would make it not work on 3G with AT&T. They aren't going to sell an unlocked phone in the US that only works on 3G with T-mobile.

why do you say that? there seems to be some indication there might be a verizon version.

1. the initial rumor was for a verizon device
2. there is a Passion and a PassionC device listed in the android 2.1 builds. PassionC is likely the CDMA varriant.

Wondering when people are going to stop saying "fanboy"... it's like 3rd grade name calling... it shows a total lack of creativity and invalidates everything they've just dribbled.
...

And yet you use the word "dribbled". That must be 4th grade lingo!

Sorry the term fanboy bothers you so much but truthfully I just dont feel like typing lemmingsforapple everytime I want to make a point!

What you're missing is that while I only use 1/2 of the features in the Office the 1/2 I use is different from 1/2 that someone else uses and so on. For every feature that you think is useless there is someone else who deems it critical and so on.

The only thing in iWork that is any good is Keynote. Pages and Numbers are toy programs at best. I've attempted to use both and always ended up back on Office:Mac to get work done.

Toy programs? Seriously? Bean maybe a toy program, but Pages and Numbers are more than enough for basic tasks like writing a letter or report or resume as well as doing some basic calculations and charts (not only basic actually).

And who said anything about useless features? The point was made that a lot of features are left unused by users because simply their tasks are a lot simpler. So why they have to buy advanced software they will never make full use of if they can achieve the same result if OpenOffice/NeoOffice.

No one is arguing that there are people who need that extra features, but seriously I hope you know that it's only a fraction of all computer users.

Looks quite nice. The proof will be in the usage though.

Personally I don't get why people feel threatened by competition. It's generally a good thing.

The problem is that OLED sucks in sunlight where mobile devices are often used.

Not quite - it sucks in direct sunlight which hardly anyone uses their phone in (usually an oblique angle is fine). OLED screens are better in absolutely every other circumstance though, especially those where you're likely to be using it for media playback (on the bus, train, plane, etc).

I expect the next iPhone or the one after it will have an OLED display. I wonder what the doubters will say then? ;)

Looks promising. Can't wait to play with one.

my thoughts exactly - competition is good - although it would take quite an innovative device for me to toss aside my iPhone - esp since it plays a critical role with work, but I am always open to investigating other products...

you're right, it's the company that manufactures the phone.

In the Android universe, I'm sure that there will arrive a design with fins on it, 50's style. Knock yourself out.

When it comes to design, I'll defer to the company that this guy works for. I'd say he has a pretty good track record.

Your being bored with the iPhone says a bit more about you that I really need to know, and doesn't really affirm any cognizance of design on your part.

Wow, a world of hundreds, maybe thousands, of phones all running Android. Just like the ugly world of Windows I have to live in. No thanks, I'll think differently.

So, using the iPhone means you "think differently." I have been a Apple fan for as long as I can remember, but I just don't think it applies anymore. Everyone running around my school has the iPhone and their matching aluminum Macbook Pro. It has become a fashion statement for many. (not everyone) I have the iPhone, and this thing is looking old. The OS looks just as it did YEARS ago, and has added few features. Google is full of innovation, just like Apple. I realize that at this time the iPhone is the best, but this will not stand if things continue this way.

Man, as much as I enjoy my MyTouch 3G (OS, form factor, features), it is slooooooow.

It really needs a better processor (or more RAM); there are times when I wait 10/15 seconds for the home screen to appear after exiting from an application.

Now I need to figure out how to unload my MyTouch and get one of these.

It will be a hard sell to lose the physical keyboard, but I imagine a new 2 year contract and the phone is yours...

It is around the holidays. Instead of thinking about just yourselves, I encourage everyone to give to others if you can. If you have an old phone, please visit this website before you consider trying to make a cheap buck off of it.

There are many other organizations like this out there, take some time to help someone else. :D

Friend.

Pretty straight forward process to sell your phone I would think.

Oh yeah, go iPhone!

... Looking at my iphone though, I'm thinking how tired I am of the design.
...

God, I hope the Tablet is not going to be a glorified iPhone!

So you want them to put fins on it or something?
The design doesn't get much cleaner than a monolith. The design is on the INSIDE now.
Sorry you have such an adolescent attention span.

And yes, the Tablet will be a glorified iPhone. Get used to it. Its not going to be a Mac.

so I guess the reason car companies like Benz, BMW, etc upgrade their cars each year with new features and looks because of "adolescent attention spans"...

Sony Ericsson is still the best hardware maker out there for handsets. Everything about them says quality. I hope Google runs with Sony for their phone, especially with the cited evidence.

I suppose it's possible that Google has set up a little competition between handset makers. Perhaps they're pressuring HTC and SE into a duel for the Google phone. The timing is right, they have a good range of devices out right now, and Motorola looks like it was rescued from the brink with it's line of DROID phones.

Either way, both contenders offer devices that will be incredibly fast, sporting high-res screens and a fantastic quality camera.

Which reminds me, Sony Ericsson's incorporation of their Cybershot technology in their handsets has made their phone cameras outrageous. A 12mp Sony Cybershot CCD in the Google Phone seems to support the above comment. It will also likely have duel xenon flashes. iPhone has an amazing sexy flash add-on kit for it's slightly outdated 3mp camera, right?

ya, everyone knows the iphone camera is horrible under situations where the light isn't super bright. I'm not even talking about dark, I'm talking not fully lit areas..

anyways.. hope they do this, but apple seems to be years behind everyone else when it comes to the camera on the iphone..

It may have a clean design, but glossy plastic? It sucks having to put a stupid case on it. If you let this thing go "naked" it looks like it has been to hell and back in no time.

GarageBand is not free!

Wow, please, please link some of these free apps that are better than GarageBand, I'm really interested in them. If they exist. Actually just one will do. One free app that does what Garageband does, only better. Please.

GarageBand is not free. First, you have to invest into a Mac computer, if you haven't already got one. That's gonna cost you. Secondly, you need iLife. On its own, iLife '09 is $79. That is $79 more than free. If you have an earlier version of iLife, again, it's $79. If you do not want iPhoto or iWeb, it's still $79. So, GarageBand IS NOT FREE.

I could have cited other comments. For some reason, people take iLife as it's free. Yes, we get one copy of iLife pre-installed on our new Macs. But that's it. Its price is included in the price of the computer package, along with the price of OSX. So, again...

GARAGEBAND IS NOT FREE!

Oh Goody....

Another Android.... That's 8 OS builds isn't it? Linux-esque...

Personally I think Google will eventually get into the phone business I am just not sure when.

Remember Motorola wants to spin off the Mobile Devices division in the near future once things stabilize. I could see Google being a major investor in that new company. They would get everything they need to develop new phones without starting from scratch or having to contract out design and engineering.

I don't know what will happen in the end, but I would not rule out a Google-Motorola tie up. It makes a lot of sense for both companies and it would be a game changing combination of a hardware builder and a software maker. Motorola needs the money and Google needs the hardware.

If you followed the whole thread, then you should have noticed that the question was not wether or not we pay for iLife.
There was the claim that there are better alternatives outside even for free.

And just to have that mentioned, illegal downloads do not count here ;)
