Some people just can't understand that most of the users don't need half what MS Office has to offer and iWork for example is very nice little office suite I use almost everyday. Pages, Numbers are more than enough for me and as you said Keynote rapes PowerPoint almost in every aspect.

If that's the case then that's a real shame as PowerPoint is heavily used especially in financial institutions and with the current Apple model the chances of iWork seeing the light of day in a corporate world is dim.

How is it unintentional if they plan on making games in house by hiring a game developer? Unintentional is staying with the current flow and just allow the third party developers provide whatever gaming comes along. I don't know what you see when you watch their TV adds or view one of their five 4 story billboards, but I see a device, playing a game in someone hands. Just because they don't have a itouch vs PSP or a itouch vs DS commercial does not negate the fact they promoting the itouch as a handheld gaming device also. I don't know, don't remember but in the 90s did Apple have PC vs Mac commercials? Things change and so does Apple.

You are citing rumors as fact. Apple already makes Texas Hold 'em for the App Store. Are they a major game developer because of it? How do you know that they're not making an accompanying blackjack game? If Apple were becoming a major game dev you would see an acquisition similar to MS buying Bungie. As it is the job position you are citing is for a low-level employee with gaming experience.

Whether you believe it or not, Apple doesn't really care about gaming. They just happen to push it for sales of hardware. They will not change their product line if the DS or PSP come out with a new feature.

As for ads in the 90s, yes Apple ran attack ads against Intel promoting the PowerPC platform and there are videos out there of Jobs saying MS has no taste. They ran those Ellen Feiss & Will Ferrell switcher ads as well. Keep mind that we are talking about the Jobs era and not the horrific era (Scully & co.) in between. In the 80s they had the 1984 ad that attacked IBM.

Criticism is good. But it's the opposite.

Well, they do. The whole notion of an MS "fan" is a complete contradiction. Fans of what? Office? Windows (LOL)? Exchange? WGA? Songsmith? The activation process?

No, most of these lost souls are fans of hardware that have no choice but to turn to Winblows if they want to continue building and tweaking their systems and play games. So they're defending the only real choice open to them.

First, OS X had Bootcamp to accommodate Windows. Then we had the Office for Mac. Ironically, one of the most marketable features of OS X towards the corporate sector is native Exchange support. I don't see that Apple agrees with you. Or they are perhaps followers and not trendsetters, when it comes to - how did those simplistic 'Get a Mac' ads said? - work. I have iWork and Office too. I only use iWork for two things - the full screen view is nice and some templates work well with the multitouch trackpad. Otherwise, Office beats the hell out of iWork. Try any half-complex database or long research documents and iWork shows its limits.

What really matters is what you do with your computer and not which OS you use. So many softwares are available for Windows and for Mac that I have to wonder - for what particular task do we need to prefer either? Personally, I am tied to OS X as I use a certain bespoke software for our business. But it would be so good to be able to buy some reasonably priced computer hardware and decide, whichever OS I want to install on it. It's one thing to worry about defects on a 500$ computer and it's another on one that costs 2000$. Sadly, I haven't got the choice of worrying about the shortcomings of a cheap PC.

I don't promote close attachment to any OS. Apparently, any form of cultism about computers is pathetic. Just as I do not see the point of Windows-fanaticism (if such thing exists), I cannot see the basis of any Apple 'fanboyism', letting alone 'cultism'. Using your above logic, an Apple Cultist would be obsessed with iLife and Finder, right?

I always preferred to spend my time with friends, family, work and my hobbies. Continuously degrading a particular OS or mindlessly defending another indicates more of a 'lost soul' than anything else. Or unemployment, perhaps...

But I have to say this - I like certain features of OS X. However, after four or five years of almost exclusive OS X use, I still miss Winamp and Total Commander. Incidentally, I think that iTunes and Finder both offer a more visually pleasing solutions but at the price of usability. I don't understand why I need iTunes with my iPhone, why I cannot directly delete songs from it without a computer, for example. Even basic applications like Path Finder put Finder into shame. Given the choice, I would replace Finder with Total Commander and iTunes with any old version of Winamp. For ripping CDs, better applications are available. For purchasing music, Amazon's lack of copy protection and pricing already pushed me away from iTunes. In terms of media, I only use iTunes to download my The Economist podcasts and Special reports. But I am a subscriber of the magazine.

I also miss a transparent file management. Why I end up with multiple copies of the same music files and pictures under OS X is beyond me. Other forum entries reveal that I am not alone.

Some complain about how unstable Windows generally is. Personally, I haven't had any issues with that. It's the matter of some basic maintenance and that's it. However, this week I called Apple three times. Now I regularly empty the Caches folders; still, I have beach balls so often that now I am considering choosing a Baywatch-themed wallpaper. It is obvious that my MacBook Pro is closer to a flashy but incompetent and lousy hooker (pro) than a professional computer.

You claim that: "most of these lost souls are fans of hardware that have no choice but to turn to Winblows if they want to continue building and tweaking their systems and play games". Do you blame MS or Windows users as Apple does not authorise OS X install on third-party hardware? In terms of hardware, I thought that non-Mac users had more choice. I always had the impression that it is actually legal OS X users who often make the mistake of getting emotionally attached to their repackaged PCs.

Before anybody would come with this simplistic recession crap - with this amount of advertising, there is no wonder that people buy Apple products. Alcohol is also selling well, but it doesn't prove that it is better than milk. But sometimes I wonder - if MS had the same attitude and tried to limit the use of its own products (making it impossible to install Windows and Office; and have Exchange support on Apple hardware), how much growth would Apple have had?

Finally, about the actual topic... My iPhone's battery doesn't last a full day, calls cut off, clarity is questionnable and it has a 2MP camera with no video recording, whereas my three years old Nokia phone has a 3MP camera with video recording and good voice clarity. I accept that it is nowhere near to the capabilities of any smartphone, so the week-lasting battery life might be easier to achieve. Yet, any good phone on the market should be good news for consumers. Hopefully, one day the iPhone will be closer to fulfil the requirements of a mobile phone and not just be an iPod Touch with some basic mobile capabilities.

tmobile? perhaps the only worse choice than at&t. good luck with that carrier.

other than that, i welcome competition to the iphone!

You missed the "sold unlocked" part, though they will need to add extra bands to the radio for it to work on AT&T.

However, I really, really hope this forces Apple to start selling a unlocked iPhone.

I'm also hopeful for resolution independence, as the 480x320px screen on the iPhone is getting a bit long in the tooth compared to newer devices. Even though it blew me away in 2007, the text could still be a bit crisper, especially when using Mobile Safari on non-iPhone formatted pages. Any newer, higher resolution device would have to be compatible with the 100,000+ apps in the App Store. From what I remember, Apple is rumored to be bringing this resolution independence tech to Snow Leopard's successor, most likely utilizing some sort of vector graphics system. This would allow easy scaling between devices, and would be necessary for the success of newer devices, because lets face it, the iPhone won't have a 480x320px screen forever.

Tell me about it, I've been using my Droid exclusively for near a month and I turned my iPhone on to see if I had any messages or anything and checked a web page and was shocked to see how mediocre it looked. Honestly I couldn't go back just based on that.

How does Apple handle resolution in development? Is every app developer going to need to update to higher res manually?

and...

Some people just can't understand that most of the users don't need half what MS Office has to offer and iWork for example is very nice little office suite I use almost everyday. Pages, Numbers are more than enough for me and as you said Keynote rapes PowerPoint almost in every aspect.

Some people just can't understand that my business is my Livelihood and too important to me and my family to risk using some semi-compatible product like iWork or Open Office or some other garbage....

I spent years building a reputation as a successful CPM Scheduler / Project Manger (Netscheduler, get it) and I don't need to ruin it by engaging in bad business practices like sending a client a file that he/she can't open (or doesn't open correctly). I'll be damned if I'm going to risk my reputation on anything other than industry standard software (MS Office, Primavera Project and Portfolio, etc)...

Good Post Kernkraft. At home, I use Macs exclusively. In my business (OK, not a big business, I have 4 employees including myself) I have a mix of Macs (Email, Web use, Quickbooks for me and my son) and PCs (Primavera Project Planner, Primavera Portfolio Manager, Microsoft Project, MS Office including Outlook, and eFax - me and my son and the other 2 folks get these). My server is a cheap PC running Ubuntu Server (Email and Webserver, Storage space of archives). All my machines are well maintained (I have a DMZ between the server and the office machines) and have never had a virus or any other problem. We block porno, gambling, music, torrents sites, and gaming.

Different machines for different jobs. Works for me..

The Google phone looks nice

The job pretty much requires I have a couple of contract free handsets to put local SIMs in, wherever I happen to be in the world (usually to test systems we've supplied but also to avoid roaming costs), so I've been looking at Android for a while now. A major plus point over Apple is you can simply go out and buy an Android phone....

So i guess you send only PDF or plain text documents?
Cause as i remember PPS slides (and not only they) tended too look different from one version of the software to the next.

Ahhhh, no...I send entire spreadsheets. I set up KPI spreadsheets and charts (SPI, CPI, EV). My clients like to modify the sheets themselves to do "what-if" analysis of their projects. It's part of the service I offer...

And I know this is hard for you to believe, but my clients actually know how to open a spreadsheet and print it out..

Here is the deal, there is a difference between being an "MS" fan (which quite frankly is extremely difficult to find) and being anti-MS.

I am annoyed by the antiMS type which goes around making fun of MS and it's users in every single opportunity they see, even if it doesn't have anything to do with MS. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, the fact that someone prefers a PC or Windows, doesn't make them a lesser person , they aren't lost souls(maybe you where, maybe a few are) they just have a different opinion that you.

why is that so hard to understand??? :(

You also talk like if any reason to defend Windows is inherently bad, like gaming. And btw, you are doing the exact same thing: You are defending the choice that have made.

Next contender

Let's see .... Palm Pre is already all but forgotten, not advertised anymore. Still hyping the Droid. I held one in my hand and it truly is just another piece of Motorola JUNK. Felt cheap with a truly bad keyboard. The Samsungs all had nice keyboards, I noticed.

Nothing as nice as the iPhone yet. I'd like to see something that can compete.

Well, Let's take it an issue at a time...

I like iPhoto. For someone who just wants to manage their photos and movies quickly, it's a nice little program and I use it regularly.

iWeb is a total joke. TOTAL!

Garageband is OK for doing casual multitrack. It's no Protools or M-Audio Live but it's ok. But I'm not the best judge as I still "make music" with hardware, ie. my BOSS 1600CD that works for me.

iMovie is nice for a quick family movie (and 1 button click to YouTube) and I use it often - but I keep Final Cut Lite closeby.

I love and hate iTunes sometimes at the same time..It's nice for syncing my iPods and iPhones but my company (and many others) have it on the Blacklist, so I can't install it at work. It is getting a little bloated for my taste.

Exchange works great - so great that Apple licensed it. My iPhone syncs perfectly with my company's email servers and because of it, iPhone is a much better solution than the nightmare that is Blackberry.

And iWork is another complete joke compared to Office. I couldn't exist without Excel - and Numbers looks like a 4 function calculator next to it...
Isn't anyone bored with these tired old iPrograms? The bland, bloated look and feel is so dated. They remind me of the way MS Office has changed over the years - little (in terns of the basic most used features). Apple has become another MS? Apple need to speed up their innovation into actuality rate.

Unlocked? It'll be interesting to see the price on this.

If our choices are limited to AT&T and T mobile, why would I pay full price for an unsubsidized Google phone at $599-$799 when I can get the next generation iPhone at $299-$399?? I will be stuck with AT&T or T mobile anyway. If I am going to be stuck then I want a subsidized phone.

Majority of iPhone issues are with the carrier (AT&T) so how will Google phone make my AT&T experience better??? Doesn't matter how fast the processor, it still has the same bandwidth problem during download.

I really thought the way for Google to catch up to Apple is to put in $$$$ into Android app store and encourage people to make better apps. Right now I heard one of the biggest complaints is getting paid for developing apps for Android. 2nd major issue is Software people complain about no uniform hardware and various versions of android OS. How are they to keep their applications backward compatible and compatible to all different hardwares by different phone makers.

You are right; Microsoft products are the de facto standard. They are a poor standard, but at least there is no Tower of Babel between companies. There is something to be said for that. I hate that this became true because of noncompetitive practices (Office products were once all free). I truly liked all the competing products better, meaning Wordperfect and Lotus123

Nothing against you, or your partners, i am sure your form of collaboration works good for you! After all that's why you choose it.

Just there are situations when you get documents created in version X of an office program, and then when opening it in version Y it looks slightly different, or some stuff even goes missing.

And that is not a problem specific to one vendor, ...

I'm not convinced HTC are the source of the new Google phone rumour.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android phone due next February has a UI named 'Nexus' and was code named 'Rachael' prior to it's official name. 'Nexus' being the series of replicants/androids in Blade Runner and Rachael being the name of one of the replicants.

Daringfireball has been reporting Android phones accessing the site with a 'Nexus One' user agent already and spinning it as the Google phone when it seems more likely to me at least it's an X10.

The X10 also looks a gazillion times more sexy than anything HTC is likely to come out with too.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-announced-we-go-hands-on/

Sony Ericsson is still the best hardware maker out there for handsets. Everything about them says quality. I hope Google runs with Sony for their phone, especially with the cited evidence.

I suppose it's possible that Google has set up a little competition between handset makers. Perhaps they're pressuring HTC and SE into a duel for the Google phone. The timing is right, they have a good range of devices out right now, and Motorola looks like it was rescued from the brink with it's line of DROID phones.

Either way, both contenders offer devices that will be incredibly fast, sporting high-res screens and a fantastic quality camera.

- "Weirdly" large camera

Which reminds me, Sony Ericsson's incorporation of their Cybershot technology in their handsets has made their phone cameras outrageous. A 12mp Sony Cybershot CCD in the Google Phone seems to support the above comment. It will also likely have duel xenon flashes. iPhone has an amazing sexy flash add-on kit for it's slightly outdated 3mp camera, right?

Like corporate world main target for Apple. As I sad most of user all over the world have no idea what 2/3 of features of MS Office are and how they work or why they should use them. iWork being simple with everything that is needed for most of users fills that space.

By the way MS software is used in a lot of places just because most of people know no better and that's just sad.

They improve in small useful steps. Sometimes things are maybe still not added. But what i personally like about Apple is, that they usually going into one direction over the releases.

I think it is good they are not a clone producer. iWork Numbers has some beautiful concepts. It is still a jung software and lacks mature features like script/makro integration, which makes more complex things still impossible.

IMO MS Excel is one of Microsofts better applications. So it will take some time until they catch up totally. But again, it will look different and feel different, cause they have their own idea how to do it.

No one is talk about people like you though you are not special. There is no need for children in school to use Word to write and format two page story as they can do the same thing with Lotus, OpenOffice, NeoOffice and etc., There is no need for Excel if you only use basic formulas, charts and etc.,

THAT"S WHAT I'M SAYING.

I sincerly hope that sony does not make the phone I've never heard of a sony phone that hasn't broken.

I'm just hoping this will keep apple on their toes, pushing them hard to innovate then google will respond, then back to apple - competition is good and will make both better

Google is one big headache. None of their products are even half-finished.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
I welcome some competition to spur Apple on, for things I would like to see, like:
(1) 5 - 7 Megapixel Camera
(2) Larger Flash Drive
(3) Larger Screen > OLED > More Pixels
(4) Front Facing Camera
(5) Better Battery
(6) More Interface Customization
It's what I'd like to see.

Oh, but there is also garage band... which again can be replaced by better free apps.....

Wow, please, please link some of these free apps that are better than GarageBand, I'm really interested in them. If they exist. Actually just one will do. One free app that does what Garageband does, only better. Please.

(sorry to go off topic for this post)

Stop feeding THE TROLL.

It's a beautiful phone. I'm on the edge of my seat to hear some battery tests though.

I can absolutely see myself using this as a world phone over an N97.

Ultimately, between my 230 Apps, three iPhone family plan, and being under contract my iPhone stays.
