Now THIS is exciting news. Very cool app.

I am assuming this is just apple restricting ipod touch from making google voice from working.

In theory as long as ipod touch has wifi access, it should work.
I think your assumption is incorrect as Apple has approved other Google Voice apps for use on the iPod touch; I'm using GV Mobile + on mine and it works fine.

Most likely, this is Google choosing not to allow this app to be used by iPod touch users. Same with their HTML5 mobile Google Voice site. You need to access the site via an iPhone; it will not work as a dialer on the iPod touch.

OK, the app works, with all important push notification and contact list integration. So for that, I am very grateful.

But the app is ugly as a sin, easily the ugliest texting app I've ever used (send dialog box takes the cake). Messages are not organized by sender (only when you reply within the thread), there's no search (which is a shock since Google is all about search), and it's kinda slow.

Quick Dial Contact Photo issue

Has anyone experiencing quick dial contact photo being all messed up? I just tried to load about ten contact to the quick dial and the contact photos are all mixed up...:(

text forwarding

I'm trying to avoid text fees via GV but texts are still forwarded to my iphone (sort of defeating the purpose) is there a way around that?

Why no support for GChat.. I don't use the Google Voice much, but would like a native app for GChat.

Go to settings and stop the forwarding of messages to your phone, the App got Push notification, you will get notify when you get a text

Web app still has more functionality such as changing which numbers calls are forwarded to, but I'll enjoy the push notifications

That's mostly true, but if you switch to "old version" at the bottom of the page then you can enter in a number manually.

I've been dying for the app since I use Google Voice to allow for international calls on my cell phone. Was hoping I could use the app instead of relying on my laptop just for simplicity's sake.

Oh well. At least now I can download the "Getting Better" by the Beatles to turn that frown upside down without having to go to my iPo... oh, wait. Never mind.

literally just about an hour before this announcement, i was on the macrumors page and said to myself 'how lame that the most important/only tech news of the day is still the beatles, what happened to the Google voice iphone app??"

completely not knowing anything about it being released today, but i've been sitting in pins and needles waiting for it ever since i read back in september that it had already been approved...and i just cant pay for unofficial apps knowing official apps are on the way...

i'm a soothsayer..

now to start thinking of some other apps that i want, maybe they'll magically appear in the app store too..

cant you log into google voice on the web and turn the text forwarding off now, and see if they come straight through to the voice app now?

Help me out . . . .

What this effectively does is make your iPhone a 2 line device? One through ATT and one through Google?

Nah. You can set up your Google number to forward to your main line, so you can just hand out the Google Voice number to everyone. That way if you change providers or phone numbers you can seamlessly switch behind the scenes.

In a way, yes, if you set it up like that. Plus, with Google, you get to pick your number (if it is in their pool)

Fair enough.. I would imagine similiar argument can be made for ipad; that however is what i truly want.

By the bye, I find it amusing that Google was able to slip some Android interface elements past Apple.

Naughty Google.

The push notification is FAST. Faster than the txt message that gets forwarded to you. Pretty good so far but . I do wish they allowed for multiple account logins as I have a GV for work and one for personal. (One of them is routed through my Skype number so both numbers get fwd to my 1 cell phone.)

The official app does have a better UI, more pleasing to the eye, easier use. But in terms of functionality, the GV Connect app is better but lacks push. If they can build that in a future version, people would be much happier paying for it. So in the meantime, I will use both.

DjAmTraX: GV has never ever advertised that they would be VOIP like so not sure why you would expect that.

benhollberg: you prefer that it calls you back? I find that quite annoying actually but everyone uses their GV differently :)

Search for "googlevoice" one word. Worked for me

Ditto....I discovered the same thing.

Seems to be lots of confusion about what GV does....would recommend that those wondering go to voice.google.com and read about it. Like others say it is not a VOIP app. It does used your cell minutes. Since AT&T gives free Mobile-2-Mobile minutes, it's actually better to call other cell phones using the regular phone app. But I give out my Google Voice number as my main number to everyone because like others have said if you ever change your cell number you just can re-direct GV to it. Also having it ring to several different numbers is great.

I prefer the look and feel of the GV+ app as well but it's great to have the addition of push notifications. Guess I'll keep both on my phone for now.

I like GV for a couple of things. One, when I'm out of the country, I can check my voicemail on my computer and not have to call the US. Two, I like being able to type texts from laptop and still have it come up on people's phones with my number. Much faster than typing constantly on the iphone. Now, I like being able to make calls from my computer as well.
