I really feel that the fact they moved the UK orders back by 3 days is a good sign. If Apple was anticipating a longer delay, then they would have set the new date to at least the end of the month. No way a company says "it will ship in 3 more days" only to turn around a take much longer. If there was a bigger problem, they would have set the new date with plenty of time to get them out.

Just to make everyone second-guess their orders....

According to page 14 of the 'MacBook Pro Technology Overview', the MBP does have 'dual channel memory'. This means that if you install memory in pairs, the computer will be faster than with just one DIMM. (10.6 GB/s of bandwidth as opposed to 5.3 GB/s.)

So everyone who opted for the more expensive single-DIMM config of 1 GB RAM, you would end up with a faster computer with the $100-cheaper two 512MB sticks. Of course, then it becomes harder to upgrade, as you'll have two 512MB sticks to do something with.

(Me? I ordered the 1 1GB stick version, because I'm going to get a second 1 GB stick from Crucial. I considered going for the 2x512 model, buying two 1 GB sticks from Crucial, and selling the two 512 sticks on eBay, but that was too much work.)

And I lucked out today. One of my customers just bought the Sony equivalent of the MBP (15.4", 1280x800 display, 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics, ExpressCard/34 slot, even a Sony 'MotionEye' built-in webcam, although theirs is USB-connected,) and it came with an ExpressCard/34 memory card (MS/xM/SD) reader. This is in addition to the built-in Memory Stick reader. She saw it in the box, asked what it was. I told her, explaining that the computer has a Memory Stick reader built-in, and this was for people who use xM or SD cards. She replied "Well, I have a Sony digital camera, and don't even plan on connecting it to this notebook, since I hook it up to my home computer. Do you have any use for it?" CHA-CHING! Now I don't need to go hunting one of these bad boys down!

The Sony is much heavier than the MBP, though, and has a lot of 'extra space' around the screen and is more brick-like in shape than the sleek Apples. (14.41"Wx10.81"Dx1.39"H, 6.17 lbs. vs. 14.1"Wx9.6"Dx1.0"H, 5.6 lbs.) Only Sony's 4-pin unpowered FireWire, lower resolution screen, marginally worse video chip (which is optional, the much worse Intel chipset 'processor-based' video is standard.) But it did have a few things that would have been nice in the MBP: Faster processor option (up to Intel's fastest 2.13 GHz model,) Dual-layer SuperDrive (theirs is tray-load, though,) S-Video out natively, three USB ports, and a CardBus slot in addition to the ExpressCard slot. And their model configured like the $2500 MBP only costs $2025. (If you configure it like the $2000 MBP, it's only $1615.) But, I'm willing to pay $475 for the sleek Apple product plus OS X.

Hurtley,
I was wondering if the Sony Core Duo has the problem listed in this Tomshardware review here: http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/01/28/toms_hardware_uncovers_power_drain_issue/. It seems there is a problem with the Microsoft drivers and the Core Duo that causes a USB2.0 device to drain the laptop battery. If this is the case in the Sony, I wonder if this will happen in the MacBook Pro? I hope not because I'm hoping to get a MacBook Pro when the RevBs come out....

Keep in mind that it's the Microsoft drivers causing the problem... since Macs won't be using Microsoft drivers, that particular issue shouldn't be a problem. Will they have their own version of the problem? We'll have to wait and see.

elbirth,

I would like to think that it is a Microsoft problem, but the articles suggests that both Intel and Microsoft are pointing fingers at each other and it could be an Intel problem. I'm hoping it is a Microsoft bug because it just makes me love my Macs even more:D

I recall Apple doing this three or four times with my Mac Mini.

Really? that's dissapointing. Did they tell you why they were doing it? How many days did they push it back each time? Were you one of the first to order one?

I placed my order March 1st, due to ship on the 31st (plus minus a day or two), first delayed to april 5th, then the 11th, then the 15th, when it in fact shipped the 12th. (Yeah, I had to look that up) There is no real way of predicting when the MacBooks will ship from this of course, it just sets the precedent that indicates Apple will delay orders for several days at a time, and do the same thing several days later, if so required.

About this close I tell ya

I am about this close I tell ya to canceling my order for the MBP and just getting a PB! I need a mac for work and am currently using my daughters 12" powerbook, I can either run Illustrator or Photoshop but not both. This is the first time I have bought a mac in 10 years, the last one was a PowerPC 7100/80 and I seem to remember waiting for that damn thing too. I still have it maybe I will break it out. DAMN YOU APPLE!!!!! DAMN YOU TO HELLLLLLLLL!!!!!!

You haven't even reached your estimated ship date and you're going to cancel? Go for it...

Don't do it! We need your review :p

his sacrifice will be someone else's gain

I also don't see the point in being upset and willing to cancel an order yet, the 15th which the vast majority of us have been told is still a week away....

I am gladdened by each cancellation, since it lightens the inventory pressure and makes it more likely I'll get mine shipped out on the 15th. So please, if you're on the fence, take my advice and cancel. :)

Yah like there won't be 10,000 other reviews out there. :p ;) Personally the first thing I'm planning on doing once I get it unpacked is to open her up and see if the thing is ZIF socketed. If it is: SCORE! We could possibly upgrade once newer CPU’s show up that are at a smaller fab size which == less power == less heat.

I guess I will hang in there

Just needed someone to get me motivated, nothing like a "go ahead and jump" to make you want to hang in there. You should be a suicide counselor.

No need. Why risk your machine when some crazy Japanese Geek will have the pictures posted within 0.03 seconds of receiving his?

*edit* That said, I've already got this page bookmarked! :)

I just gotta say that if you plan on using this MBP for photoshop and Illustrator right away then I think that you may be a little dissapointed. From what I have heard in the iMac Core Duo threads using photoshop non-Universal is pretty brutal... but even with Rossetta you might be better off then with the PB that I have ;) I guess that we will have to see.

Core Duo in Socket / Soldered

So do we know if the Core Duo is in a socket or is it soldered to the motherboard?

If the chip can be removed and replaced, would heat then be an issue? Last time I checked the Core Due 2.1GHz (mobile) was going for at least $700 US.

Ef that.

I've seen reports that the chip is not soldered into the Intel iMacs, and someone successfully upgraded the CPU in theirs. Whether or not it's the same for the MacBook Pro is yet to be determined, but I see a good chance that it should be the same.

In-store by the weekend!!!

Hey all, just posted this on the thread addressing our concerns on shipping:

""""""""

Well well young Macbook lovers, what news do I bring???

Just went to the UK Apple Store Regents Street to buy Office - since I need it for work. I mentioned the MacBooks ...

'Any ideas when you're gonna get em in', I joked.

The bloke casually replied, 'Well don't tell anyone, but we've just got the demo models in today, they're downstairs.'

 'Really! When you gonna be selling them then?'

'They're looking to get the shipment into our stores by the weekend'

 'So you'll be able to buy them this weekend?', I asked pointedly

'You'll be able to buy them this weekend', he repeated flatly

'When you gonna have the demo models out and about then?'

'We should have em in the store by tomorrow afternoon'

'Wow, thanks mate', I replied cooly

The above conversation went something like that anyway. I'm fairly certain that they had the demo models in, from the way he said it. He also seemed fairly confident when I directly asked him if they'll be available to buy from this weekend at the store, although I wouldn't hold my breath - he could just have been flirting with me, I was wearing my best scarf. ;)

Here's to some battery readings by mid next week! :D

"""""""""

So can we expect an update tomorrow afternoon about whether or not they actually appeared on display? Please? :)

I'm not sure I'm that bothered to go on down to the store again tomorrow, might leave it to the weekend. I promise I'll go once in the next three days, but I'm sure they'll be more than me reporting back when they are out and running. ;)

Cheers.

There's a lesson for us all. Don't wear your best scarf when you go hunting for rumours. ;)
